The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I have tried to get into the habit of writing everyday online for a long time and now I finally think I have found the right place. Thank you for creating it.

Writing is important and 750 Words is an important part of my day. It’s wonderful to have the space to write and think and hopefully more people will be able to do this. It’s great to combine writing and coffee and give a bit to a charity as well. Everyone wins. Thanks Buster!

Just wanted to say thanks for the site. I have done Artists Way lots and have found the Morning Pages requirement onerous because I type free-style much faster and more clearly than I write free-hand. What a gift this site is for people like me. The other gift is the freedom to write “Morning Pages” at five in the afternoon, if that’s when you have time. I love the badges. Keep it up

Thanks Buster for a wonderful site. I give myself permission to miss a day after having written for 100 days in a row and being rewarded with a Phoenix. Thankfully, I still haven’t missed a day.

750 Words has forced me to write every day, which is something that I’ve always said that I’ll start tomorrow. I’ve only been here for 20 days and I’m starting to see improvement in my writing and my concentration. And looking ahead to November, I won’t have a repeat of last year which was: “OH MY GOD I HAVE TO WRITE 7000 WORDS IN FIVE HOURS.”

Thank you so much Buster. Your site has struck my motivation and my inspiration.

Tortoise Badge

First of all, I love 750 words, thanks so much for doing it.

I think you need another badge, though—one for us slow and steady tortoises who aren’t able to do all 750 words at one go but who keep coming back and eventually get there. As it is, the site rewards Cheetahs, who spill out 3 pages really fast all at one shot. And if you don’t do that, then you somehow got “distracted.” But my “distraction” is my young daughter… and if I get pulled away from the site it’s not because I’m staring at Twitter or something; it’s because my life won’t allow it.

I agree that writing 3 pages at one go is, indeed, the ideal way to do this. However it’s not the only way, and not everybody is in a position to do that—not because we have ADD but because we have complicated lives. I think it would be nice to balance the site’s emphasis on speed and efficiency with an acknowledgement that sometimes “stick-to-it-ive-ness” is also valuable.

Metadata Extravaganza!

This is probably something that has already been requested, in whole or in part, but here are my dream features:

1) Ability to view several categories of metadata simultaneously.
2) Ability to delete categories of metadata that you tried once but now don’t ever want to be reminded of again for some reason that you won’t reveal to others.
3) A way to set metadata defaults so that your metadata page always shows a certain graph of your selected categories.

As always, love the site.

A dark theme for the entire site.

An option in the settings to switch the site to a significantly less bright colour scheme. Ideally, what is now white would become a dark grey, and what is now green or black would become a suitable shade of orange. Having an option for the entire site to become a little more night-time-friendly would be an awesome addition.

"I Write Like"

It would be an interface to the “I Write Like” site that would return the results of a days writing with the name of the author(s) that match that days work.

Since writing these 750 words each morning, my brain feels lighter, freer, more at ease to do whatever brains do all day long when they don’t have to worry about keeping all that crap in, since I get it out on the page bright and early in the morning. I’m almost getting a little teary eyed….

I used to be a night owl leaving my words to sometime after 11pm. But that always led to disaster, if for some reason I forgot, or didn’t hear my alarm. I now make it the first thing I do after I shower, breakfast etc. Now my streaks are going perfect! Also writing in the morning puts your mind into gear for how you’re going to tackle that day differently.

Thank you Buster for creating the most important website on the web today!

This is a great site. After writing consecutively for 62 days I am surprising myself that I am still motivated to keep coming back each day. When I begin my daily entry, I start to think what could I possible write about today. But, once I get going I end up with 800 words before I know it. I am thankful for the site because it is very motivating with all the stats and badges. It’s reminds me of the stickers the teachers give out to the kids after an accomplishment.
Keep up the good work Buster!

Thanks, Buster, for 750words. I’ve used a lot of the blogging and journaling programs, which certainly fulfill their purpose, but 750words gives me awards. Yes, those badges are great. I always make a point to go to my page to see what badges I have and what badges I still want to get.

Word count for Nanowrimo

I’m thinking ahead to a counter for Nanowrimo, where you could hit your 750 words as normal, then move on to the 5k words needed for Nanowrimo without having distractions count against you.

reward regularity

users are rewarded for being consistent. points are given for writing at or around the same time each (week)day (say, within 90 minutes of mean entry time). users can define their own ‘work weeks’.

In the options, have a way to set your own ‘midnight’ when the day rolls over. My day rarely ends at midnight, and I would prefer if I could set it to 3am or something like that.

More Badges, Please

At this point I have earned all of the badges except the Phoenix and the Bats (late night writer). I write because it helps develop my writing skills as well as organize my thoughts and plan my day. I love getting the badges though. Please add some more so that I have something else to look forward to.

Thanks, Buster, for such a useful and fun site.

Dear sir,
For the past year, I finally got into consciously researching and implementing effective goal setting methods, organizing methods and ways to improve myself. Nothing has proved to be more beneficial then the service that you so generously created for free. Every day I leave my bedroom relieved from stress, having a clear mind and an optimistic, driven outlook. The statistics were instrumental in analyzing my thoughts at a level i could never have imagined. Continue the great work!

Sincerely,

Stepan
