The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

750 Words single handedly all but saved my writing habits. I had gotten out of the habit of writing every day (outside of November, for NaNoWriMo), and my writing career had come skidding to a halt until a friend of mine recommended the site, and now I’m probably two thirds of the way through my next novel and writing at a pace that I never would have achieved without 750 Words. It’s been a lifesaver, it really has.

I’d like to make a confession. I missed the midnight deadline. So… I reset my timezone to the mid Atlantic.

I realize this is not on. And I’m really sorry. I hope this charity note makes up for it. Please don’t make me move to the mid Atlantic. I just couldn’t face failing another monthly challenge on the very first day!

I completed my first One Month Challenge in July, and hope to complete a second in August, and a third in September and so on… I would urge everyone to try their absolute best to complete at least one One Month Challenge, because the sense of achievement at the end is great! I’m on a 38 day streak at the time of writing, too, and really looking forward to getting my Phoenix badge come day 100. This is the first time in my life I’ve written every day for more than a month (thank you, NaNoWriMo, a challenge everyone should have a go at too!) and it feels really great to have done that.

This site is truly awesome. It keeps me writing (almost) everyday and by writing everyday, I’ve started a creative writing blog. Thanks Buster for the inspiration…

750 words has given me the outlet to write out my thoughts, do writing exercises in books I’ve been reading and to get into the habit of writing each day. Thanks!

adjustable word goal

In customization, there could be a secondary word goal following the 750 set up, so writers could try for reaching more words than 750 (especially, say for the month of November during NaNoWriMo), with a badge for doing that for a month as a possible feature?

FANTASTIC – my third try and I’ve gotten through the monthly challenge, even as I take care of my little toddler and work through a dissertation. I’ve always had a journalling habit, but it ported itself across many analogue and digital media until 750words made it easy to plonk everything down quickly online every day. Now I feel I have earned the right to go visit my father for a two week trip, putting my writing aside…and I am doubly encouraged to monthly challenge again, but this time with the prize of ferociously mocking Zhan Li, who introduced me to 750words, if I make it. Sweet victory will be mine…

750 Words has been a great tool for me over the past few months. I reflect, I plan, I dream and sometimes I vent during my daily writing exercise.

750 Words provides a nice stable framework to help me remain disciplined to write every day.

Thanks for developing it and sharing it. I hope this small contribution helps with the site’s costs.

Woot! Woot! I feel like a champion. I mean, the badges are nice, and do inspire me in a childish way to keep going, even when I think I don’t have anything to say. But finishing the one month challenge makes me really feel like I’ve accomplished something. Plus, well, I wanted the badge.

I am a calmer, saner, more rational person since I started having a safe place on the internet to spew my thoughts. I no longer lash out on internet messageboards, I save my angst and my anger up, and I write it out, pounding the keys until my head is cleared, I know what I actually think, instead of just reacting, and then I’m able to return to the world without biting people’s heads off.

How has 750 Words NOT affected me? I mean, Buster’s fantastic web app is worth it’s weight in Zip Drives. That didn’t come across correctly. Let me try this tack: I intend on implementing it in my classroom this fall. I find so much value in it as the perfect modernization of Cameron’s Morning Pages exercise that I’m going to impose it on my English students. I’m experiencing pre-emptive withdrawals as I consider my forthcoming family vacation when I know I’ll be “off the grid” for a week. I hate sacrificing the “points” let alone the catharsis!

Thanks, BB!

I downloaded what I had written during the month of July so far and it was more than 40 pages — single spaced!
750words.com is a great tool for blocked dissertation writers. Thanks a lot!

Since we don’t know what we think until we see it written down, I am grateful to the site for introducing me to my own mind. Since we can be sure that no-one can read what we have written unless we want them to, I am grateful to the site for giving us all the confidence to let loose. Truly, a benefit!!

setting your own midnight comment to a patron's earlier comment

i still love this site, but i just encountered a huge disappointment… i stayed up late last night and when i sat down to write, it was 12:30….so the system has ‘dinged’ me as ‘missed a day’ and now my continuous writing streak is no more…. how can this be remedied? another patron mentioned ‘setting your own midnight’ and maybe this would enable night owls to not be dinged for a late night/early morning writing spree?

I love 750 Words! It has kept me focused, and the site is so easy-to-use, and so clean-looking and uncluttered, that it’s a joy to come here every day and write/type/journal/rant/vent/theorize.

Thank you!
