The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I’ve finally earned my Turquoise Horse of Awesomeness! Since I first read about this site on Lifehacker I thought it was a brilliant idea. I love the idea of daily writing, but don’t have the exhibitionist tendencies to let it all hang out on a blog. This site is the perfect blend of functionality, motivation, privacy, and community. Writing here has become a huge part of my morning routine. Starting my day off with a cup of coffee and my 750 words puts me on the right foot every time. Thanks so much for creating a great site!

I finally got around to printing out all my 750 Word entries — haven’t missed a day since April — and was amazed to see how it all added up. As Meg Ryan might have said, all those “nothings” added up to a big “something.” Ann Lamott really was right; 100,000 words might seem daunting at first, but not when you take it 750 words at a time. This site, and all those silly badges, have done wonders in helping me establish a writing rhythm. Thanks again!

I’ve just finished writing my final entry, completing the August challenge, so I am quietly celebrating this modest achievement with—what else?—more writing! I never did find my name on the Wall of Awesome, nor on the Wall of Shame, and while that bothered me the first few days, I stopped caring. Eventually I stopped caring about the stats, too, and the badges, or the very sluggish horses by Jack Cheung! I realizde I was doing this challenge for myself, to complete it was its own reward, and it didn’t matter who else knew that I was writing every night—I knew.
It has been fun, and surprisingly easy to come here every evening and write. I think you have found a patron for life..thanks, Buster, for this little space of quiet, motivation, and focus!

I live near the original 826 Valencia in San Francisco. I’ve been a fan of the project since I learned about it at McSweeney’s. Thanks for helping to add to the world of writerly goodness in the world of young people.

An iPhone/iPad app

It would be really nice to have a real iPhone app (and I would gladly pay for it). I do not trust the Safari browser all that much since it’s starting to crash on me now and then.

I carry things with me a lot. Ideas, embarrassment, longings, dark thoughts, etc. 750 Words has finally given me a place and an encouragement to get that all out on something so I can either do something about the good things or let go of the bad things. Today I wrote about something I did over six months ago that was still bothering me and now I feel like I can move on from that experience.

This site is wonderful and having a space to reflect and organize my thoughts and practice writing while I sip some coffee is the perfect way to start my day. Writing is so important and anything that contributes to that makes the world a better place. Thanks, Buster!

Well, I paid my dues for failing the August challenge but I have done so very willingly. I am ramping up for NaNoWrimo with high hopes. I have failed four years in a row because I really didn’t have good writing habits. Thanks to 750 words I am feeling more hopeful and prepared. I will be signing up for the September challenge. I am on the road and don’t always have internet access so I missed a few days here and there. I do hope that there will be an iPad app in the future that will log offline writing time for when I don’t have internet access. Thank you for the site.

Booked holidays

I was on a 98 day writing streak and then went on vacation and decided that I’d rather lose it than look for internet cafes in Venice, but it would be great if there were some way we could book days we knew we’d be unable to write in advance (so it wouldn’t be a case we just forgot to write one day). I’m not sure if be better if it were possible to write the specified holiday days beforehand or whether we could somehow get days off for x-number of days in a row (so 30 days in a row would get you one day off at some point when it suited you).
In the meantime I’ll just start all over again :)

When I was faced with a scary medical experience I dropped everything—work, school, hobbies, friends—as I tried to deal with it. I had signed up for the monthly challenge, so I kept up my daily 750 words, and only this, for those two scary weeks. For ten days of this I was too worried and scared to write about what I was thinking and had gone through, so I used this site to write words of encouragement to myself. It helped. When I was sent in for emergency surgery, I was able to stay calm, remembering what I had written here; and when I recuperated I spent my lucid time remembering and writing about what had happened here, too. This site was an island of sanity, all the more so because it is private but also because it rewards us. I’m grateful to Buster above all, but I’m also grateful to all the other writers here, who helped keep me going. Just knowing we were all typing together, I felt part of something bigger than my own problems in a way a blog or a diary or a letter never could.

I’ve developed the habit of writing for 15 min. every day that I work on my dissertation. This week my computer has been in the shop, and 750words came to the rescue. Thanks.

This is my Note of Shame.

I had committed to donating another $15 to 750 Words if I blew the August Challenge. At the time I made that commitment I had about 120 days in a row so I really didn’t think it would be that big of a deal. I was going for my annual badge so of course I would write every day in August.

And then I had a great day last Friday, more bustling than busy, spending time with colleagues and family from the early morning until late at night…only to wake up Saturday thinking “Oh no! I didn’t write yesterday!”

So I have made my payment and I have climbed back up on the horse and I hope to see you all with a Note of Success at the end of September.

I think I’ve run out of badges that I’m likely to get (not generally writing in either the morning or late at night) & I’d sure like some more: I’ve done the 100-day streak & the 100k words (yay!).

I’m close to making 750words an unmissable part of morning routine, along with walk and bathroom and nourishment. Sometimes, though, I barely squeak in before 11 p.m. It keeps getting better and better, clearer, more useful, more productive, always energizing. Thank you, Buster.

Thank you for making this site. I love it and really look forward my writing time each day. I’ve always been an occasional paper journaler, but this new method helps me be more disciplined about it. I’m going away this weekend, to a remote place, with no computer or internet, so I’m going miss a couple of days – This makes me sad. Is there a feature that could be added to redeem yourself for lost days?

After attempting Morning Pages several times (in a paper journal and on my computer), 750 Words provides a simple format that makes it easy! And the early morning reminders keep me on track! I am writing again daily thanks to you!

After reading the Artist’s Way, I was always very set on doing the morning pages. So a site dedicated to that specific purpose was a great find. The extra badges and challenges gives you a nice motivational kick and makes the act of “brain dump” just a little more creative.
