The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Well, even though I blew it yesterday and was booted from being in the running for July, I have picked myself up, dusted myself off, donated more money to the cause, and written my 750 words for today. Like many others, I’m finding that completing my writing is helping me complete other tasks in my life especially the ones that I resist.

Thanks 750words!

750words is a companion that always listens. Each morning I wake up relieved, affirmed, and reflected. Thank you for such a wonderful gift.

The site keeps me motivated. I make a commitment to myself and I can’t wiggle out of it by doing twice as much tomorrow; I have to do it EVERY DAY and that has helped me to keep my focus on what I want, which is to be a writer.

If Facebook games have taught us nothing else, we do know that people will do all sorts of things to see little cartoon icons. I am still continually amazed at what a motivational spur to establishing a disciplined and consistent pattern of intellectual productivity the prospect collecting a picture of a horsie can be.

I am recovering from a head injury. I’ve been in therapy for over a year now, and It is an incredible pleasure to simply be able once more to keep to a schedule and do the sort of complex cognition that writing demands. I’ve been using my 750 words to keep a journal about my adventures with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. The length of the entries is just right for my still limited attention span and stamina. The act of writing every day is helping me sort through the things that have happened to me. There have been several occasions where I went back to my doctor and said, “I was writing about thus-and-such the other day, and that reminded me that I needed to tell you this, or ask you that.” By looking back at descriptions from my notes, my doctor and I discovered that I might be having mild seizures associated with my injury. So thank you, 750 Words. You’re helping to heal me.

A widget for my blog

Take the shared stats page and shrink it to a narrow jpeg picture that I can put on my blog Wordpress automagically. When folks click on it, it takes the new victim to 750WORDS and traps them for eternity in this squirrel wheel of writing.

The much-needed sense of accomplishment I get from writing here gives me the willpower I need to fight through the rough patches in my fiction-writing endeavours. I’d struggled for so long that I forgot how good it feels to succeed—am currently on a 40-day streak (having joined the site exactly 40 days ago) and I’m going to keep writing come hell or high water.

I am so chuffed with the new badges as it gives me a different goal to aim for whilst writing my words each day.
Love writing them as it clears my often muddled and confused brain.
Cheers for this fabulous site

YES!!

Huge fan of the badges. And would like to massively endorse the ‘Real Badges’ note. Think it’d be an EXCELLENT idea. I’d definitely buy them; this project is the Best Internet Find to date!

Though, of course, being a closet eco-warrior, would love to see the materials being made from recycled goods… :-)

Dear 750worders,

I have finally, after 3 months of trying, won my badge. My horse of Awesomeness.

Awesome.

I have signed up to the July challenge (and you still have time to do so too!) and I intend to complete it.

However, this month will be tainted slightly. Come August and September, I will be travelling around Egypt and my internet access will be sporadic at best. I have been planning this trip for some time, and I’m unbelievable excited.

But I’m not sure what I’m going to do about uploading my daily writing and win the much-coveted Phoenix badge.

Can anyone suggest a remedy? Buster?

Happy writing all,
HJ

Real badges

I would like to see a feature that would allow a writer to buy a real badge (whether it be a patch or button) once they earn one. For instance, if someone receives a turkey badge, a link would be available for them to buy a real one to show off in the real world. The money made from these badges can then be used to go to the site or any other organization/charity. Maybe even a contest can be arranged for users to create their own version of the badges, so people can buy more than one of each if they choose.

Finished the challenge last month but forgot to sign up for this month so in light of my oversight I’ll make the reward sweeter for those of you in the running. Good luck and good writing!

Family Patronage

My wife and son are now writing daily with me and its become a thing, we say “Have you written your 750 yet?” and we support each other but only I have the patron badge. A family option would share the badge at perhaps a higher $ rate per month.

I have missed keeping a real diary – I couldn’t share my private thoughts with the world on a blog, and 750words has helped me to sort out how I think and feel and improved my writing in the real world too.

OpenID logins please

Could we please have OpenID available as logins? I have some friends who are very interested in this site but are not comfortable with security and privacy issues around Google, Yahoo, & FB. They’ve mentioned OpenID & I’m sure they’re not the only ones who would like it!

More badges in between 30 days and 100 days

I am on day 67 and how I wish there was some other badge to work toward. This is like being in a marathon without any water stops on the horizon. I know I will get to 100, but even after two consecutive months, I have over a month to earn my next badge. Please build something into those in between days…. THANK YOU!
