The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Allow smaller font sizes as well – something about the way you’ve set it means that even the smallest font size comes up giant on my screen.

Moar badges! I wanted to put my cups into the pot for the monthly challenge, but sorry, badges are more important to me. Going for that Phoenix is all that stops me from being lazy when I’m running late on a day.

I love the badges, so I’m voting for more of them. Something between 30 and 100 days would be nice. I’d also like to see something on the site to explain what each badge is for and how to earn it. I still haven’t figured out how to get the cheetah badge!

I finally finished a monthly challenge, and I loved that it felt like such an accomplishment. For someone like me, who needs encouragement to finish anything, this site is great! I mostly use it to flush out ideas for my fiction-writing hobby, but it’s also great for getting other thoughts off my chest.
Here’s hoping some kids here in Seattle learn how much fun writing can be.

Buster, this bounty is dedicated to you, old chap.

People forget that sometimes journals and word ramblings can get as illegible on a computer screen (despite font restrictions) as they used-to-could via the pen & pad method. But there is something about 750 words and its structure that prevents things from getting out of control. Which, for freewriting, is a hidden requirement.

So yes, let us freewrite-away here on 750 words, but let us also toast Buster for constructing a movable fence, a summit, a challenge, a word math system, and of course, a bounty for consistency.

This cup’s for you, Buster.

It would be really helpful if writer’s could bookmark specific sections in entries. That way if writer’s want to go back and find writing on one specific thing, they can do so easily if they’ve bookmarked it. This is a good tool for people who are professional writers and use 750 words for idea flushing.

Thanks!

I had read something about ‘morning pages’ in a couple of different places in previous months, and stumbled upon 750words.com in March. I decided to give it a go, and quickly learned that I dealt much better with using each entry as a brain dump in the evening, rather than a brain booster in the morning. I also discovered, somewhat to my surprise, that it’s indeed a very useful process for me, and made all the more useful by the odd hybrid of private writing & public accountability that the site offers. I’ve now completed the May challenge, and am participating in the June one… I foresee 750words.com entries being an ongoing fixture in my life, and I’m ever so grateful for the site.

In mid-May, 750 Words glitched a completed entry on me—erasing some 300 words as if they’d never existed, ending a 40+ day run and knocking me out of the Monthly Challenge. And every day, my bitter streak received an irritatingly cheery reminder—"Oops, looks like you fell out of the running."

On the last Saturday in May, I sat down with a video game. After facing defeat at the hands of its grueling final boss, I returned to my computer…and discovered that I had six minutes before midnight. Sure, that’s not too late to copy-and-paste. But the fact that I’d just self-pwned, three days before the finish line, was indisputable. “Karma,” my mother would say.

Resentment is worthless. Laughing it off is better.
The pursuit is the thing. Like all the other games I play.

So, 750 Words: thanks for the diva-check. Let’s call it even. ❤

Up until three months ago, I hated writing. Then, I signed up for a 750 Words account. I have found that writing every day has reaped many benefits. I now look forward to freewriting every day, so I can sift through my thoughts and forget about all the stressful ones. 750 Words is awesome!

At first, I thought I’d never be able to write 750 words a day – what did I have going on in my life, to fill up that much space? I had a lot of things going on, unwritten and unspoken, just below the surface. 750words has helped me living a more meaningful life by providing (silly but somehow sufficient) rewards for figuring myself out. I don’t ever want to stop writing here. My eternal thanks <3

This site has cleared my mind to be able to focus on other things and to stop the whirlwind of thoughts that sometimes over take me. Some of the things I was thinking about were moving so fast that writing was the only thing to calm them down and get them out of my head so I could find out why they bothered me so much. 750 words is just about right for a good mind cleaning.

Thanks!

After writing my daily words for two solid months now, I’ve seen some patterns start to emerge, most notably that a lot of times, my Words were a whole lot of complaining – things that I couldn’t do or change, and reasons why not.

While that’s important and really helpful sometimes, I don’t want to turn this into just another place to bitch & moan. I signed up because I wanted to foster creativity and expression, not negativity and frustration. So today I introduced another discipline to my routine, a 100-word limit on complaining. Kind of like twitter, but longer and depressing. The rest of the time I commit to spending on the possible, mundane or not. So far so good!

Thanks, Buster, for creating an outlet that has become so many things for me! (And congrats on the little one!)

I fell off my horse.
It’s okay. Don’t punish yourself.

Just get back on the damn horse.

Don’t cheat. Don’t cheat yourself.
If you didn’t write today – it’s okay. Don’t punish your writing because of a contest.

Use 750 words to choose to write. Even if it’s about mundane things.

And get back on the horse.

The greeting page for this site is literally word perfect. I immediately understood why you would create this site, and it struck a chord with me. I just hit 50 days in a row and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

Thanks so much for letting me get out of my head!

I started a blog a few years ago to get myself to write daily, but quickly became cramped by the things I couldn’t write about without getting negative attention. Writing this way is much better, and the word count keeps me motivated while I write. I love this site, and appreciate all the effort put into it. Thanks!

I think I’d like to see what triggered certain “moods” on the graphs. It would be cool to hover over the graphs (or click on some link below them) and see what the corresponding words generated that graph. Optionally it would be cool to see what opposite words would reduce that mood. In this way I could practice my writing skills to trigger an emotion. This would be a really cool feature. Optionally, while I type, the window could show the mood I’m generating. I realize this may be a bit trickier to do but would be very coo.

750 notes has really helped me both get ready for the day ahead, if I write it in the morning, or clear any problems I may have on my mind at the end of the day. It has seriously improved my mood throughout the day and helped me to work out many ideas I’ve simply had jumping around in my head with no clear direction. Deciding to write on 750 words has been one of the best decisions I’ve made this year.

ARG, I had an 83 day writing streak going and one asthma attack episode completely wiped it out.

BUT, today starts a new streak and I’ve paid my donation to 750 Words I said I would if I failed this month’s challenge. And I signed up for June. My new streak started TODAY. Good luck everyone!
