The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Keep writing! It is kind of like drain cleaner for my mind – nothing like fresh ‘pipes’ at the end of the month!

Thanks, Buster, for creating a site that keeps me thinking! I am a student minister and often use my daily words to work through some thoughts and avoid the Saturday-night sermon panic! Or I write for fun – which is always a treat!

I achieved Phoenix status yesterday, and the 100 days have flown by. 750words is an important part of my day now, helping me clear my head and focus on what’s important. It’s amazing how daily writing helps unleash your creativity. Thanks, Buster!!

So far, I’ve written my 750 words through thick and thin, through the intestinal flu and, now, through a concussion and dislocated finger, and I did it all for those little badges. Well, that and for me. I just got the “flock of seagulls” badge, which makes it all worth it. Thanks, Buster! This all helps me establish a writing rhythm, a ritual, and that’s what I was after.

I just got my phoenix, and I’ll be celebrating all week. 750words is an integral part of my day now. Don’t even need a reminder any more. Thank you, again, Buster.

I’ve been lame and missed a few days of the August challenge, so I’m paying up.

750words is one of the best web apps around. Everything from the concept to the tiniest instructions is simple, intelligent and inspiring. And the stats are an awesome geekfest.

Keep writing, people. ;)

More badges for accomplishments

Please add more badges between 30 and 100 day. And we definitely need something to look for after we get to Phoenix.

Thank you for this great service. I never thought I could get that far with writing 3 pages everyday. No matter what.

When I absolutely had to write, I used to sit at a blank page, stuck. 20,000 words later, blank pages aren’t so scary.

To be a good writer, first, you have to write. Thanks for helping me get closer.

Average Word Length

It would calculate the average word length for the current days entry, and would be seen on the stats page. An average word length for all the writer’s entries (combined) would be nice too.

I’d love the dates to show the latest date, not the first date that I earned each badge. And have somewhere that can be covered with ALL the badges. :-) Fabulous site – I love it here.

I did not think I would be disciplined enough to get very far with this. Now I have to feed this albatross…I appreciate that.

I’ve hit the doldrums and need a push and while the goal of making it a whole year is a good one it seems REALLY far off at the moment. An incremental goal with a fun little badge attached to its attainment would be SO AWESOME and greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Writing about mundane things has always scared me. It takes too long, goes nowhere, and usually comes with this guilt, telling me that I should be thinking about bigger things, more ‘important’ things, instead of wallowing in thoughts about riding the subway. So my approach to writing gradually moved towards ‘only write about consequential things,’ which doesn’t amount to much at the end of the day on most days. 750words kickstarted that raw, unfiltered journaling again, and in the process helped brush up my skills. I end up writing much more, much sharper – and the guilt is gone because I’m writing with a time limit in mind, try to limit my backspacing, and am effectively learning to train the flow of freewriting. (not to mention I’m pretty obsessed with the badges!)

I think badges are a clever way of summing up for how long someone has been writing. Perhaps there could be more badges for word count?

750words is quickly becoming my favorite morning ritual. After writing I feel happy and energized. Having a solid goal to achieve also helps my focus. My writing skills benefit from daily use as well, and I feel more confident working on my other projects.

Saturday I messed up. Didn’t get on line all day and didn’t write my 750 words. Agh! Can’t believe I bombed out on the last day of JULY. Working now to start over with August and here’s to September. (Got to build towards that Phoenix!)

Searchable Users

Allow users of the site to search for other users by name (or by e-mail, etc.). Currently, to follow someone requires browsing slowly through pages of daily lists. Can we have a simple search to find friends we want to follow?

This site has just been so great. I’ve been able to plot out story ideas, rant about things I could never say on my personal blog and just get all the worries out of my head. I really believe that writing 750 words a day has helped out my writing SO much that the next time that NaNoWriMo comes around, I’ll be able to knock it out of the park a lot easier than I did last time!
I value this site so much for giving me a safe space to clear my head. I love that I can just get all my thoughts out there and then be done with them if I choose, or go back and look through them if I want. This site really is indispensable!!!

About a year ago I was doing Morning Pages regularly and got really into it. Things happened and the writing went by the wayside. Once I found this site, I thought I’d try it and now I’m hooked on daily writing again! And I would like to commend you, Buster, for having such wonderful insight into the human psyche, because having something to work toward really helps. We all want our gold star for doing well and with this site, we get it! So thank you!

750 words has done so much, it’s helped me think about everything that’s going on, plot everything from stories to my finances, get rants out of my system, and generally just have a hell of a lot of fun. Love it <3

Just wanted to say thank you for such an inspired site. I’ve always loved the idea of morning pages, but while I found them helpful, I loathed every minute of having to write long hand.

This site is such a simple idea, but so very helpful and beautifully implemented. I’ve just finished my first month’s challenge – a mix of general waffle about my day, story ideas and mentally working through problems in my life. Writing my 750 words is now one of my favourite parts of my day.

Thank you.

750 Words single handedly all but saved my writing habits. I had gotten out of the habit of writing every day (outside of November, for NaNoWriMo), and my writing career had come skidding to a halt until a friend of mine recommended the site, and now I’m probably two thirds of the way through my next novel and writing at a pace that I never would have achieved without 750 Words. It’s been a lifesaver, it really has.
