The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

This is my Note of Shame for August. I figured that the best way to make it have an impact was by contributing half it to 826 Seattle. Good luck, kids!

I just completed my second one-month challenge on the bounce, and it feels great! I cannot believe I’ve now written for 71 days in a row, and am now just 29 days from the Phoenix badge, which seemed so far away when I first signed up to the site back towards the end of June.

750 Words has helped me to start blogging properly – four entries on my blog so far, but I’m trying my best to keep it updated regularly, ideally a couple of times a week rather than once every three months, and this site has really helped me with that. The more I write, the more I want to write… it’s fantastic! See you again at the end of the month, when I hope to be singing with joy about my Phoenix badge!

Oh thank goodness for 750words.com!! As someone who used to circle my keyboard more times than an indecisive dog looking for a place to nap, I’ve finally found the perfect spot to launch my writing day. Since I began using this site at the end of May, I have written for 96% of the days. It’s painful to miss a day (love those badges!), so I’m very motivated to return – ideally daily. Best of all, and at long last, I’ve noticed a huge up tick in my ability to move forward on other writing projects. All those words that have been stuck in my head, rattling around like kibble in a dog bowl, finally have a place to go. I look forward to enjoying these benefits and more the longer I use this site, which I plan to do from now until forever. Oh, and one other thing: my typing speed has improved, too! Bonus!

I love this site! Writing every day forces me to reflect and has both helped with my time management and my stress level. Thanks, 750words!

Finally, a safe and pleasant place to leave my soul bare so that I may write stories unburdened. Thank you, Buster, from the bottom of my heart. May faeries lift you on their wings to a giant Genie in a bottle who grants you endless wishes. Until then, know that you are much appreciated. —Christina

Highlighted text Metadata

I love the metadata! And would love to see searchable, filterable highlights. If after writing for a month, I could filter for emotions and view related clippings of my writing or search words or themes and see them highlighted throughout my text it would allow me to relive those moments and gain retrospective.

I have a hamster wheel mind, obsessively spinning. It’s a dripping water tap mind. It’s the sidewalk air-blower man at 3 am. I’ve kept a journal for years in an attempt to settle the sediment to the bottom of the bottle so I can go through the day clear and tasty.
You know that makes this site better than those attempts at conching? The pseudo-psychological stat report. “Ah, so I am thinking pessimistically about family again. Maybe I should tell my estranged mother to get some help.” “Hmm… contemplating food. Perhaps I should eat.”
It just adds some great closure to the whole process, a much needed final layer of distillation.

Badge Upgrades

It would work much the way that badges work now, except that it would improve a currently existing badge. So, rather than just getting a Hamster for three days of writing without distraction, after another 10 days of distraction free writing you would be upgraded to a Silver Hamster. 30 days, Silver Hamster, 100 days, Gold Hamster. Just imagine how awesome it would be to get that Gold Phoenix badge after 1000 days of writing!

Flock and Phoenix and one-month challenge completion all in the same week. Whew. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—this site has absolutely saved my writing (and my sanity, too).

In a few hours I’m headed away on my first vacation in several years, and you’d better believe I’ve already planned out internet access for every day I’m there.

Thanks again for the site, Buster. It is not too strong to say that it is changing my life.

I’ve only been writing for 12 days, but am signed up to the September challenge and determined to complete it. Sometimes I write bits of stories, other times I ponder issues in my life, or write total rubbish about some random topic. I’ve tried daily writing before, but the rewards on the site like the badges and seeing the statistics, etc. really make me want to come back and do more. Psychologically it makes daily writing a lot easier to stick to. So thanks for coming up with this site, and long may it continue!

Awesome, this is my first month challenge I finished and on my way to the second one. All the way in one streak to the holy Phoenix.

Thank you Buster, your simple but effective site, especially the badges made me want to write again!

750 Words has begun helping me work through the issues of having a long distance relationship. We each write our 750 words and check up on each other’s progress as we go. Using 750 Words, we’ve been able to decompress and really think about the day’s issues instead of worrying each other with our daily problems than we already do.

It feels so good to have an excuse to clear my head at either the beginning of the day or at the end of the day. My thoughts may not always make sense, but it’s great to be challenged to think about the things in my life.

I’m always in a better place after I’ve written my 750 Words, even if I have to drag myself to the finish line. When I stall around 300 or 400, I think about how good I feel when the word count turns green and I keep going.

This website has become such an essential part of my day that I can’t imagine going a day without writing. I’m studying abroad at the moment and I have managed to commit to writing every single day despite all of the insanity that is my life. This bodes well for NaNoWrimo. :)

Thank you so much for 750words.com! It has been a great way for me to get back into the habit of doing Morning Pages. And I love all the motivation here! Earning badges, seeing what “place” I am in the monthly challenge, and more. I especially like seeing my daily statistics, showing my feelings and emotions. I also love “entering my subconcious” and the ability to use metadata in my daily pages. These are terrific features that go beyond a long-hand notebook version of Morning Pages. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
