The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I feel that we are always asking for more badges, I know I am. I really think that this is something that the site should listen to and jump on. There are many other “secure” sites to write daily and some of them even have writing communities where you can chat with fellow writers. What makes this site so different is that it helps with setting up writing goals and rewards you for meeting them. If there is no reward for continuing on…why do so? Why not move to one of the many other sites that offer the same thing minus the badges? I don’t really care about if the computer says that I’m talking about death or family or that my writing feels happy or angry. Half of the time those stats are wrong. Make that about 90% of the time they are wrong. Pretty much none of the information in there is useful. Badges would be useful and would keep people paying and supporting this site. Here are some ideas, many that I and others have voiced before.

705 days
1,000 days
1,500 days
2,000 days
750,000 words
1,000,000 words
2,000,000 words

Also, you can take some of the badges like the night owl and the hamster and extend them. How about 30 days in a row gives you a ring around the badge or gives you a star above the badge.

How about collecting a different colored horse for each month of the year that you do the monthly challenge. Silver for Jan, Red for Feb, Green for March and so forth. The one we have now can be for just completing your first monthly challenge.

How about a badge for writing so many notes of inspiration? This too would encourage people to support the site.

There are so many ways to go about this. Even I would pay to have badges unlocked.

750 DAYS

How about a badge for 750 DAYS in a row? To be followed with one for 1000 NIGHTS, or days of writing. It seems appropriate to have a badge to honor the site name and mark such great achievements. And there are probably a few people approaching those milestones now that you have been up and running for 5 years. I am fast approaching 750 days in a row and would love some way to mark it :)

Peace & Love,

See who else...

It would be interesting to know how many other writers have written over 500,000 words. Maybe their names don’t have to be given, but numbers of how many. e.g. 600,000 – 7 people , 700,000- 3 people 1,000,000 – 2 people. Also, it would be interesting to see the top 10 longest streaks on an on-going basis and how long people have been writing. Yes, I am competitive :D It would be fun to have a goal to chase!

Happy writing,
Holly M. <><

Million Star Badge

What about a badge called Million Stars? It could be a picture of a bouquet of Million Star flowers (aka Baby’s Breath) and would be presented for writing 1,000,000 words.

I would love to have a badge for 1,000,000 words since I have already passed that milestone and would love a way to celebrate it.

I would take the badge whatever it is :)

Peace & Love,

Yeah, this site is some kind of your daily conversation with your psychologist. Damn, you even have to pay him, but not as quite much as you could to the real one. It’s fun, it’s melancholy, sometimes it’s rather sad, but hey, this is life after all. Okay, I’m not really good at writing about nothing in English, so pardon me. You guys are making a great job here and I’m very glad. Thanks.

After I graduated with a “writing” degree, I felt dried up, uninspired, unable to write, even in my journals. My blogs fell behind. I didn’t carry a notebook with me everywhere anymore. 750 has brought me back to the discipline of daily writing, and for that, I am grateful. Heading toward two years as of this writing! Thanks so much, Buster and Kellianne.

I love this site. The badges and the monthly challenges have really helped keep me motivated. I’ve only missed one day of writing since I started this journey on June 1st, and I’m kicking myself over that missed day. This site has helped me create a long work of fiction that is currently at 47K words. I never knew I had it in me to write anything longer than a short story.

750 Words was suggested to me by my therapist when I was going through a terrible break-up. I was able to clarify thoughts and feelings so well in this forum. Since then, I have begun working on a novel and an account of the friendship between myself, a Buddhist, and my best friend, a Christian. I love my writing home.

I also think that there should be the ability to earn badges multiple times – maybe not an egg for each time you do a first day of writing, but if you get to 100 days more than once there should be some marker for it.

earning badges multiple times

Does anyone ever read these suggestions?

I would love the possibility to earn badges multiple times. After 100+ days I became an egg again and it is a little disouraging to work through 200 days before I earn another badge. I would love to be able to re-earn all those badges.

Other than that, great great wonderful site that has had and continues to have a very positive impact on my life.

Continue plentiful badge opportunities

I’ve been writing on 750words for almost a month now and find earning badges to be really motivating, but the farther along you get, the less opportunities there are for earning them. I love the idea multiple others have suggested about the possibility to earn some badges multiple times—like for instance getting a hamster badge every time you have a ten day streak of writing with no interruptions.

I would love to be able to adjust my limit up—in times when I want to be more productive and write more, to adjust to a 1000 or 2000 word limit to reach as a daily goal. Seems easy?

Today is my one year anniversary of using 750 Words, and it has made a world of difference in my life. A place where I can empty my brain, think about things, and examine what I am feeling everyday, without judgement or fear. It has made me more creative and a better writer—maybe even a better person! So thank you for a great year, and I hope there will be many more to come!

I’ve loved the fact that I can go back and look at what I’ve done. Though it is disappointing that I have 13 cups of Patronage left and I’m not a member so it won’t save all my words when I get truly inspired.

I’m coming up on my first anniversary, and I would love to see a badge to mark my first year, second year, etc… You wouldn’t have to write everyday to get this badge, but you would have to write some in at least every month of the year to qualify for a year to count…. Thanks

Today, I earned a badge for completing 500K words. It’s also my 500th day on the site, despite setbacks and broken streaks.

What this community has done for me is given me a place to return to myself repeatedly. It has made it possible, at long last, for me to not only envision but to write in a direct line on the same topic and for myself, for real, for the first time ever.

750words.com has made me bold enough to say “50K by Labor Day!” and mean it. The ripple effects are immeasurable. Thank you Buster & Kellianne. Thank you 750words.com. Thanks to all you word skwirls, writing your hearts out day in and day out!

Paying for more features

Hey there! I can’t honestly tell if any of the stuff we write here gets considered or even seen by the powers that be (hi Kellianne and Buster!). So that would be my first request – a bit more interaction so it doesn’t feel like we are tossing pebbles down a bottomless well.

Secondly – I thought it would be nice to have new people paying a bit less for monthly membership – maybe $2-3 – BUT to make up for the money you wouldn’t be making, to give options that everyone could opt in for or not, as they chose, to enhance their experience.

For example – we could pay a bit to unlock new badges or new writing challenges. Or to have a way of tracking how many times we’ve attained each badge, rather than having a one time only thing (example – state how many times I’ve gotten to the albatross level, or how many times I’ve done more than 50,000 in a month etc).

The site is a wonderful one that I am grateful for. However it was designed with far fewer users in mind, and hasn’t been expanded for wider usership, OR for what happens once people have been using it consistently for a year or two. What do you do after you’ve gotten 500,000 words and after you’ve attained the space bird. Wouldn’t it be fun if there was ALWAYS a new level to attain?

The site needs some refurbishing – getting rid of things that seem extraneous now that there are so many users (the point system and “people writing this month” list of 100 for example don’t really add all that much to the experience when there are thousands of people. The monthly challenge is great – but once you’ve won it once, there isn’t as much incentive to try it again – etc) and expanding other things.

There are all sorts of ways to improve the site but I realize this would take time, money and hiring someone you trust both to program and to brainstorm about the layout and functionality. But I think it would be worth it. Even if you kept it really simple – just to streamline it all a bit, get rid of what’s not necessary, and add a bit more badges and tracking statistic capacity.

People who really love this site and use it every day, and have for a long time are incidentally also the ones who aren’t paying anything to use it. Give all those folks the opportunity to invest in the site in order to make their own experience here even better. I think a lot of people would be willing to put a bit of money in for more badges for example.

Best wishes!
