The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I’d really like to be able to name my daily writing, just for myself to remember what I wrote about that day. I think this point has already been raised but I agree!

750 words has helped me to find my voice again. I have grown in confidence, and feel a hell of a lot happier! It has helped me to keep on top of things since I graduated, so I’ve been able to get some great work experience, sort out my head, and figure out what I want to do next. I’m willing to spend $5 of the £15 I currently have to my name to continue using this website. Need I say more?

I started writing here more than four years ago, and though I have gone away, I always come back. This is the first place I write every morning. It’s the place where I stretch before writing fiction, where I write accidental blog posts, where I plan my day and my life, where I work out problems with plot and myself. It’s my journal, my scratch paper, my blueprints, and my book of gratitude. Every idea starts here before it turns into something real.

I was unsure at first as to whether a subscription would be worth it as I could totally do the same kind of thing on a Word document, but it has totally spurred me to write more. Doing it in community and seeing that so many people are writing is a real encouragement.

I started writing with the Artist’s Way a few years ago, and dropped off. This will be a fun way to pick up that habit again! Thanks – figured I’d pay right away and get started first thing tomorrow morning. Cheers.

I love this site. I know there is no way I would write three pages worth of words if I tried to do it on my own. I would talk myself out of it every time. I also love the analysis. I went to a writer’s conference where I met with a published author. His first question was if was writing every day. When I said no, he suggested this site. I’ve gone 17 straight days and I get the added benefit of journaling. That’s also something I would start and then quit. I guess it’s true, “If you want to be a writer, you have to write.”

More stats on the Eternity page

I really like the stats that are already on the Eternity page, but it would be really great to get some analysis on the metadata, for example— there’s a mention of eventually being able to compare different statistics to the metadata that we as users can tag our work with, and I’d like to see different graphs that we could play around with.
Location ( a tag I use frequently) v. length of what I type a day
Location v. how long it takes to type my daily pages
etc.

I am nearly 1/2 a million words. That is incredible. Never before have I written so much. Sure, many of those words are lame, but I wrote them, regularly, and they get better over time. Thank you!

I reached my Double Flock badge yesterday, after starting this wonderful project back in January. Those 250,000 words contain so many things I never would have written otherwise— including flash fiction, poetry even though I don’t consider myself a poet, dialogs with my own subconscious, and so many tears and joys that I now have a written record of. I’ve written stuff I cringe to look back on and insights I didn’t know I had. I’ve figured out some pretty major stuff about myself this year, and I credit this site for giving me a place to dump it all until I could see the big picture.

It’s been a wonderfully rocky ride. Thank you for providing this amazing tool!

Tags and titles

It’s probably been suggested before (not sure where I find previously suggested features), but I’d love to be able to tag and perhaps title my entries so I can find them again based on something I thought was important in the entry. Until then, I know I can export or copy paste to a Word doc, but not as easy or effective to me. Thanks!

Writing Prompt

Some sort of button which, if clicked, pulls a random writing prompt from a database. To save you guys work, we (the community) could create the writing prompts and submit then to the database through this site.

An extra bit of inspiration would certainly help me from time to time.

I’d love a bit of variety. Maybe an excerpt from something to read to inspire me to write. My last sentence? Though i don’t know how you make that confidential.

later edits

I’d love to be able to edit past entries on the page, fix typos and add some stuff to a piece I started. This wouldn’t have to affect the word count written on the actual day, but it would help for writing intended for another place that needs some editing.

Thank you for this site. I did Morning Pages many years ago but got out of the habit. I am not even sure I managed a 19 day streak even back then!

I’ve been using 750 words for years. I haven’t used it every day, or even every month. Sometimes I’ve gone months and months without writing a word. But I always know it’s here for me, whenever I need it. And when I do need it, it has been incredibly valuable. It’s got me through some rough patches, and captured lots of good moments at the same time! I love it, and I hope it is never EVER taken down (hear that Buster??!).

Stats

It’d be great to have some detailed stats on our writing habits. For example, a nice bar graph showing activity over the past ___ days, months, years etc. Activity = word count (maybe this parameter could be changed to show different types of stats). What I think would be especially awesome is graphs showing days where you write the most (eg. monday, tuesday) and same goes for time of day! Not only would it be fun to see this data, but it could be useful to see when you write the most and when you write the least.

Titles

When you place your cursor over one of the green X’s on day, it tells you the date and how many words you types. It would be cool if you could write a title that shows up there as well.

I have been using 750words for three years and call it the great purger. Ideas come tumbling out on the page, good, bad or indifferent, no matter. My job is to type until I see the green flag wave.
This year I joined the NaNowritmo and am using my pages to write my book. i plan to export the month when I am done. Wouldn’t have gotten here without badges and challenges to push me along. Thanks.

I’d just like to say how much I love this site. The 750 words is quite challenging and it gives me time to think and to ramble on. I love the analysis of the writing and would love to see that continue and work even better than it does now. Thanks for a wonderful site :)

Happily, I am still on track to get my 50,000 words for NaNoWriMo!! But I have not been writing every day on 750 Words (but a comfort to know it is here whenever I need it). It used to bum me out, the empty days, then I started to think of them as “cracks” a la Leonard Cohen: “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” So instead of fretting about my missed days, I see them as cracks, allowing the light (of inspiration!!) to get in. P.S. I tell everyone I meet who tells me they have an interest in writing “someday” about 750 Words!!!

More badges for accomplishments

IT was a really pleasant surprise to get the 500,000 word badge, even though it wasn’t listed. It would be cool to get more badges, listed or unlisted.

Thanks for all you do. 750 words is the best.
