The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Dear 750 words members !

June was my first 30 days challenge. Unfortunately, I missed two steps. Once because I was disturbed by social conflicts which made me spend a painful evening, and once because I was so absorbed in a research subject that I forgot to write.

So here it is, as promised, since I did not succeed for this challege, I give 5 cups for next month challenge bounty.

Count on me to be among the challengers of july !

Here’s to the next month’s (July) Challenge! As always, I love this site. It gives structure to my thinking and my writing and I encourage others to go for the one-month challenge!

I first joined the site almost two years ago, but quickly lost the momemtum to keep up with it. Every week, I’d get my reminder email that I should write 750 words that day, and until last month I’d just delete them. But, last month I thought returning to writing 750 words a day might be a good strategy for attacking some professional writing. And, some days I do write something related to my research, but some days I just journal.

Having this site, with the incentives to earn bagdes and watch my streak increase, has been an excellent way to remind me to write every day. The days when I write something work-related I feel like I’m pushing ahead with my project. The days that I journal, I feel like I am working through the many bits and pieces in my head that I allow to keep me from being productive.

Many thanks for such a lovely spot to park myself here on the interwebs for a these moments each day!

this site has helped me write my way through mental blocks, generate first drafts of poems and blog posts, blow off steam while family members are visiting, and I’m on day 203 so far. It’s true that we need to write first, organize the ideas 2nd. Thanks Buster and Kellianne!

A display API

The display API would provide access via an authentication token to get the number of words written on a given day, or at least a bit to indicate the 750 words mark so I could put something like the built-in scoreboard on a private dashboard (or a web widget, or on Facebook, or whatever.)

So I just noticed the sharing options, and that is close to what I have in mind, but it would be nice to be able to grab my words every day without having to know my specific entry number.

I just wanted to say thank you for giving me my self-confidence back one word at a time.
I love the challenge of achieving a badge and of beating my own scores.

slowly but surely getting my sanity back on track by writing my thoughts on a daily basis and helping me become more accountable to myself.

People who write regularly produce more finished work. They have more new ideas, and more ideas to rework when inspiration falters.

How bout we turn 750words into social network for writers?

I adore this site and recently became a patron of it. I think that in all of its simplicity, it’s an invaluable tool for any writer serious to get better at his craft, but as many of the writers of these notes of inspiration, it also is useful for non-writers.

Regardless, I often feel frustrated by the lack of ability to communicate with other members within the site. Sure, you can write notes of inspiration, but there isn’t any direct means of communication. There already is a vast membership here and I’m sure they’d be dying to get to know each other.

For me personally writing on this site has been very lonely though rewarding experience.

Of course if I were to include stuff like private messaging or ability to have open discussions etc, there would have to be some things taken to consideration.

First of all the main function of this site is to provide us a place to write. Distraction-free, simple and motivating. That’s what this site is about and if any other features should be added, they would have to be done with that in mind.

So no message pop-ups or the like – perhaps even ability to check your messages would only be enabled after you’ve reached your daily goal – that way you wouldn’t use it as a way of procrastination, unless you’re like me and at times go way beyond the limit.

But I certainly feel like I would be curious to find out more about people behind the badges, streaks, statistics and names. At least we could have some kind of profile page where people could tell what they are all about.

Just my five cups worth of ideas. And yes, writing this note was way to procrastinate the main writing I was doing x)

Customize page themes.

Customize page themes.
Create a set of themes for customizing pages. Old school, white with monotype font; 70’s computer, green monotype with a black background; medieval script with a tanned, scribe background; notebook with lines or something else; etc.

At the very least I could really use a monotype font, old school Courier.

It has given me confidence rooted in knowing that I am “a person who writes at least 750 words a day” and can stick to a goal. I’ve struggled with procrastination, perfectionism, fear, and attention problems for most of my life, and I know this routine has helped. In addition, the act of writing has really helped me deal with lots of issues and thoughts, improving my mental health quite a bit.

Thank you so much for this site! It has just the right balance of encouragement and leniency to motivate me to write every day. I want the badges, but there is no shame when I fail. The real reward is pouring the daily life build up out on to the screen.

i write everyday! i can say, with complete honesty, that i write everyday. i am a sucker for badges! i love my virtual gold stars! been trying to write 1000 words instead of 750, and i hide the word count at the bottom so i am more in the story. thank you for this site – i love to see so many other writers – i wish i could read what you all are writing!

Just write. It doesn’t matter if it’s not perfect right away, because for one nothing’s perfect and for another you can always edit it later. Perfection’s overrated, go for awesome instead.

mkpladsen wrote: headings and then writing under them – Culture, Exercise, Food, Work, Weather, Money - well, mk, you can use the metadata and have a running record of what you write under those headings every day!! Amazing what you will discover! And those who moan over breaking a streak—use the schedule time off feature! No more broken streak over a missed day. There is so much to support us on 750words—let’s use it!! Yay 750!

I thought I might use up a cup of coffee asking if other writers here have a pattern for their writing. Lately I started putting in headings and then writing under them – Culture, Exercise, Food, Work, Weather, Money – etc. I find it easier to focus that way. Anyone else have any methods they’d like to share?

Joining and writing everyday for over three months now has been incredible. Since making this commitment and keeping it, I’ve got a regular “column” with over 50 entries (also known as a blog but I like calling it a column). Plus I’ve launched a website. And the coolest news of all is I’ve recently been hired to join the writing team for a NY Times bestselling author. All from committing to writing 750 words everyday and following through~no matter what. Joining has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Although I’ve called myself a writer for many years, now I’m actually living a writer’s life. Thanks for this awesome space! “A writer is one who writes.” Dorothea Brande

This site is giving me a place to get clear. It offers me a place to put my words without having to look at my handwriting. I am getting closer to taking the challenge in July ( I can’t handle anything that goes down the shame road, so I have to be ready) and to that and for that I toast with my cup of joe. May it in some small way serve you and keep you happy. Cheers!

This site is awesome. It is a buzzing in my life that needs feeding. I am at a level, even with only a 5 day streak, where I feel I NEED to write, need the stream of consciousness more than formal writing. The stream has given birth to numerous spin-off stories and essays. After, as if therapy, I like to go over my stats and see what is where (though I still do not think I am so concerned with death).
So I would say, if you want to turn writing into a craving, use this site!

Floating Counter

I was wondering if we can have a floating word counter throughout the page instead of just at the bottom. I am writing, and writing passionately, and I always to scroll down to get the total. Other than that, perhaps be able to adjust the margin on the screen?
Great, wondrous, bliss.
