The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

As I improve my morning routines, 750words has once again, as it did years ago, become a crucial part of getting off to a good start every day. Thank you, Buster, for this great site, and thank you for grandfathering me in as a member. Only makes sense, since I am a grandfather in real life.

Having more badges will inspire me to keep going to reach those levels of writing that I never thought I would…perhaps a double NaNo or larger flocks? The achiever in me likes hitting those goals and getting the badges! :)

Tag system?

I wish there was a way (or I could figure it out) to tag entries so I could find them easily later, say, if I have a story idea or a blog post idea or something that’s still ‘cooking’. I’ve been tweaking Metadata but that’s clumsy as heck.

If this is your first day, welcome to the 750 words site. Please take time to read through this whole message. There are tips you can use. You can succeed way beyond your expectations.

Today is my Phoenix day, 100 straight days of writing. Got as far as 71 before, and fell asleep before I did my evening writing. So discouraged I stopped for 2 weeks and pouted. But then I picked myself up and started again. Today I have EARNED that badge.

The task was something I would never have dreamed I would stick with for so long. I’ve hand-written morning page several times years ago. I kept it up for prolonged periods, but never every day and never counted words. Three pages, no word count.

Since I started a little over a year ago, I’ve also accumulated 212,000 words. That’s 212 thou and counting. That’s enough nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs to flesh out the first draft of two books. Me, a potential author. Who woulda thought? In 28 more days, I’ll have earned another badge as I complete 250,000.

Here are some takeaways. If I can do it, so can you. There are plenty of early pages that weren’t pretty. Sometimes to get in my words, I typed gibberish. Hey, a word’s a word. But as I kept it up, I gradually recognized a flow in my words and surrendered to it. I got out of its way and just went along for the ride, getting it down. Words and images came from …somewhere. They often just appeared on the screen. I’d glance down at the right hand corner and be amazed at how many words had clustered on the page.

Wordplay got to be a game. I toyed with my spelling and grammar, making up things that were, perhaps, only understood by me. The images the Maker shared with me morphed into two of the best things I’ve ever written. It wasn’t me, honest. The spirit was channeling through me. I was just getting it down as it flowed past.

I learned to write at least a few words at the first of the day. If I got 200 down early, I was a lot more motivated to finish by the end of the day. Got me past my tendency to delay that last dash as midnight loomed. I would say, “Well. I’ve already done 200. Only 550 left to go.”

I played lots of mental tricks. Found myself fixating on word count. Looking at the right bottom corner was slowing me down. Instead of saying I had to ACCUMULATE 750 words, I changed the script to “I only have 750 words that I can SPEND today.” Rather than considering words as precious objects to shove into a pile, the object became pushing the pile away.

I’ll see you again in 29 days. I’ll have another badge and more ideas to share. IF I CAN DO IT, SO CAN YOU! Good luck. This was my first 484 words tonight. All words count.

Just showing up to “the page” and writing has helped me clarify my own feelings, and I’ve seen interesting thoughts pop up that surprised me. Some of them just help me sort out my thinking. Some might turn into short stories. Even if my story writing doesn’t always happen here, this site helps my writing. And my sanity.

Just show up. Let vulnerability lead you to invincibility. Let humility be your scepter and willingness your crown. Make the magician your crest and commit yourself to serving and protecting the principle of transforming pain into purpose.

There’s a lot of emphasis on writing quickly, and by extension, fewer words. I think it would be really neat and encouraging to have a badge earned when you take a long time to write or write an extra amount for several days. Or just more badges with more varieties of birds in general. Honestly, either one would be neat.

Make today's green box clickable

At the top of the page, I can click any green box to see my words for previous days in the same month. But I can’t click the empty green box that indicates today’s writing – the only direct link to that is the big “750 Words” header, which is pretty unintuitive! It should be a simple fix to make today’s green box a clickable link that takes me to today’s writing page. Thanks!

Maybe a 20 day badge, and something involving a squirrel….! Like the birds, though.

I use this space for two things, often at the same time. I vent for a few hundred words, if necessary, but also use it to write up ideas inspired by a writing prompt website. The randomness and increasingly easy target of 750 words means that this is a perfect space to get ideas flowing before I move them back to Scrivener for development (if they’re any good). If the story idea sucked, at least I’ve written something and the idea can go back to percolating or be forever forgotten. The site provides freedom and a pleasant sense of community.

I enjoy using this site very much, and will keep striving towards that 365 day streak!

An effective strategy for clearing the mind and getting off the hamster wheel – I love 750words for it’s ease of use. I did morning pages for several years but ran out of blank books and I am now in my second month here (only missed one day)!

Save Button

I would like to see a button that saves your work immediately upon pressing it, rather than waiting for the device you’re writing on to autosave based on the clock. I recently had my streak “broken” because I finished writing on my phone at 1158p and it didn’t attempt to save anything until after midnight, at which point I got the “it’s a new day, refresh to keep writing”. My streak was fixed, but a clickable button like in a word processor or email program would have done the job much better.

A couple of new badges for longer streaks as I’ve now run out of badges for the length of my writing streak and its a bit demotivating not to be working towards a new one.

this site sparkled my imagination, tackled the most creative part of myself – I was in deep depression when I started more than 2 years ago and thanks to this site – i.e. regular writing – thanks to diving deep into my art and thanks to uncovering my real mission in life not only in theory but starting really follow it – I am now a different person; different? but I am more myself than ever and I am more than ever near to the truth.. if there is such a thing :) wonderful people like you my dear friends, appear around me; my dreams come true and it makes me dreaming more and more.. beautifully
thank you

Retaining formatting

So I quite often work all the way up to midnight, and then write my first 750 words of the day right away as soon as the clock ticks over to the next day

Unfortunately, because I want to retain the linebreaks in the previous day’s writing, I have to break my flow before I refresh to start writing, because I have to copy and paste all the text I was just working on elsewhere

If I don’t do that, the whole thing becomes one massive paragraph, which is a total pain to edit

So in short, it would be awesome if old pages retained the line breaks and formatting applied while writing

Questions asked and answered.

I have written when I am full of emotion and my thoughts are tangled like a ball of yarn with winding paths and knots. Some knots are larger than others all are important.

Sometimes I find the answer in my writing /ramblings, other times I find the answer pops in a day or so later. It always gets the junk out and allows the answer/wisdom in.

Do it! Write! It is good for you and so much better for your health to let it out than keep it in!

Namaste!

I have gone through phases where I have written 750 words everyday and also phases where I have not. Those periods when I was writing frequently gave me a clearer mind and more creative ideas than when I wasn’t, when I tended to be more stressed & had too much going on in my head. I’m back now, this time for good…

I discovered this site a year and a half ago, but I didn’t truly use it until this year. Deciding to actually start using this site was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Not only is my head clearer, but my muse is more active than she has ever been. The badges are what got me writing at to begin with, but my love and need for writing is what helped me to continue.
Thank you for this site. Thank you for helping me to open up, express myself, and create. I owe this site a lot, and I look forward to paying it back.

I have cleared my mind this month, every morning I have written to empty it out. My mind is completely empty now as I have achieved the NaNoWriMo badge yesterday, just three days before the end of the month. Fifty-thousand words in 27 consecutive days!

As of two months ago, I was unsure if I could write 750 words for ten consecutive days, but now the NaNoWriMo is mine!

This site is incredible, it has changed me, and I am so grateful for it.

Sometimes it might all be gibberish, but this site has kept me writing consistently for over a month now, and that’s something I haven’t managed to do on my own in years, no matter how badly I wanted to. I’m exceptionally grateful for the existence of this site.

And if you can’t find ways to incorporate new badges, maybe allow us a count on the badges to see how many times over we could have earned the badges. Or, if nothing else, allow us to erase our badges and start all over again in collecting them all.
