The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

An iPhone/iPad app

Create an iPad app to record the date and time and other info that could later be uploaded and count toward your goals. For instance, if you don’t have internet access on August 25 but you use the app to write 750 words on that date, once you have an internet connection it would be recorded that you wrote on that date. This would preserve your info for challenges, badges, etc.

I would love an app so I could use this on my ipad when I don’t have a wi-fi connection and then sync up when I get to wi-fi again. Would help make my commute into super productive writing time!

250,000 words in, I can appreciate many ways in which 750words has changed my life. Writing first thing in the morning has given me valuable clarity, both in terms of endless insights and in getting the prattling thoughts out of my head. Out of all the tools I use to evolve, this ranks right up there with yoga practice.

Whether it’s drafting up blog posts, writing random scene ideas, or just putting rambling thoughts to text, 750 Words is just the warmup I need to get me ready to dive into my daily writing. Love it. :)

If I didn’t have this, I wouldn’t know where to vent? I do have a diary, but coming here, there’s just something more satisfying when I type out my thoughts then when I use paper and pen. This is a great release, plus, I get my NaNoWriMo novels done here. Writing every single day, I get things out of my head and that’s my goal. Feels great for the moments I’m actually writing here.

I love the site and being able to have a place to write my words and clear my head either at the start, middle or end of the day. The ability to have some analysis is nice to see and review and the badges keep the achievement addict in my happy to keep going to get that next badge.

I frequently write parts of stories that I have spinning around in my head, and I label them above where I start writing, but sometimes I write for multiple stories I am working on. I also don’t necessarily write sequentially I would love to be able to tag entries with which stories or poems are in the entry so I could export those and it would make it easier to compile the entries into a single document.

Improve the patronage features

July’s challenge has beaten me. I am out. These 8 cups are what I promised if I lost the challenge. So we are square.

I was almost a phoeonix, 2 days away, and then I missed. Now I am an egg. That is too depressing, loosing the challenge wasn’t bad but loosing my streak of almost 100 days, that is very hard to take.

Please let me know when you implement a feature that will allow me to trade “cups” to maintain my streak. Until then I have decided not to use the site to write. I couldn’t take the pain, if for example I were nearing the Space Bird badge, and missed a day.

Thanks for everything.

Writing 750 words a day is better than physical exercise probably. And it’s really a lot of fun to see the stats. Thanks for building this site. As goofy as it sounds, this writing exercise has had a tremendously positive impact on my life and made me a better person.

This website has helped me clear my mind and get rid of a lot of stress. Another benefit is that I’ve gotten better at organizing my thoughts and expressing them, so I’m now better at communicating with others. I love 750words and I recommend it to everyone!

750 words used to be great – however, despite the fact that I have been paying for the site for 3 months, my “free trial” is sadly over and now I am shut out of the site. Boo hoo. Good luck to everyone else.

This site has changed my life. I have been a fan of Julia Cameron for a while but never stuck with the 3 morning pages. This sites gives you the motivation to stick with it through challenges, badges, etc. I’ve noticed that I am becoming more aware of my life and what is most important. Since I’m writing about things like that each morning, no wonder. I am also getting a rush of new writing ideas that I work on later. Julia talks about this phenomena in her books and audio programs. I’m also becoming more organized. Rooms are getting neater with less clutter gradually without a conscious effort to do it. Not sure I understand it all but I love it. Thanks 750 words for creating this site and for the difference it is making with me.

Showing up everyday at 750words.com helps me to clear the cobwebs. When I’m journalling here, no matter what I’m writing, I’m more productive in other areas. Thanks for the great forum and support!

I really love this site. I used it for a couple of months before forgetting about it for three years, and I am so glad that when I came back it was still around. I now use it as my primary place to write, especially freewriting and journaling, and appreciate how simple and elegant it is. Thanks for not adding a bunch of extra junk like so many other websites do.

Better exporting

I would love an improved export option, including more formats to export to (i.e. pdf, doc, html, rtf, etc) as well as a better file name output. Right now it automatically exports to “750words-export-month-YYYY.txt.” I would prefer it to be “750words-export-YYYY-MM-DD.txt” to properly catalogue. Also when it exports to a text file sometimes the formatting won’t stick; having other formats to export to can alleviate that issue.

I started using 750words.com somewhere around December 2010, and it helped me a lot. I finally managed to write on a daily basis, even if I didn’t feel like it or had other things to do, and watching me progress badge by badge without ever missing a day – until one night, when I was about to update my words, our router broke down, instantly killing the internets and my status as a space bird. Things were’t the same afterwards.

I became sloppy. After being a space bird for almost a year, being reduced to egg status sucked. I could as well try again tomorrow, or some other time, or cut and paste 750 words of Lorem Ipsum. It didn’t feel like it mattered any more. Still, I kept my subscription going, bearing in mind that if you pay for something, you’ll have to do it, but it’s somewhat like a gym membership, paying alone won’t make you fitter …

I started setting up a new account, one that hadn’t been ruined by posting Lorem Ipsum or taking too many days off. It wasn’t the same. I missed my old days of writing 750 words a day, at ease. I turned a freelance writer in 2012 and ending up writing less than before when I was still working part-time. I was quite busy for a while, publishing two books (that couldn’t have been written witihout the help of 750words.com) which meant quite a lot of work in revisioning and marketing. That was last year, however. 2014 was meant to be a year of writing.

I lost half a year with whining, mourning the loss of my joy in writing, and hating everything related to books. But some day in June, the magic happened. I didn’t look at my word count goal (which was somewhere around 1,650 words for a goal of 400,000 words/year), I logged in to 750words.com and wrote some 780 words, and it felt like a victory. I came back the next day, again for 750 words, and again, and again. When July started, I was ready to tacke my actual daily goal, and I did so with ease. Now, it’s been 43 days of writing, and like a recovering drug addict, I cherished every one of them. I’m a proad albatros now, and I won’t stop before I’ve made it back to space bird.

Thank you, Buster! Next book’s for you!

I just spent the last year on an IT project. Thing is, I’m primarily a writer, but I had totally lost my writing groove. I had no idea how important daily writing was to the writer until I decided to try to get back, not only into the habit, but the MINDSET of being a writer.

This isn’t some vain, froofy thing where I need to find myself as an artiste either. After the project was over, I was hired by my client to do tech writing and documentation. I know morning pages are supposed to be to help the writer as an artist. While it does, it also helps considerably more pedestrian forms of writing as well.

Thanks for the site!

Kindle App

I know that in terms of development, apps available through the Amazon app store are way down there. But I am a Kindle fire user and would love to see it as an app on that platform.

That said, the site works just fine on Silk, the Kindle browser, as well. But I’d definitely buy the app, as well as tell people that I use it!

I have written over 300,000 words of two novels using 750 words. Is every day a novel writing day? No, but most days, I look forward to my evenings with 750 words. I just love knowing the site is here for me, and I feel so fortunate to be able to use it. I won’t use Paypal (I don’t agree with CEO’s politics) but would like to pay toward my use of 750 words.

I love 750 words! It’s a great way to clear your mind and get ready for the day. It’s a beautiful tool for brain-dumping or getting all the crud out of your mind. In the three years I’ve been doing 750 words, I’ve felt more inspired to write which has given me a grand bit of confidence!

Hey… that’s a lot of caffeine. Given the joys of the last few months (house-hunting on a much less than median budget while our rented home is being sold out from under) it’s one of the things that keeps me sane. Where else can I rant without getting in trouble? Also a great way to let the pros and cons argue it out while I just watch…
