The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Please retain line breaks

I find I often write my musings more like poetry, where I hit ‘enter’ a lot to move to the next line, using the line break as my punctuation, to keep the thoughts flowing more freely.
However, when I come back to read my old entries, all of those line breaks have been removed, and all my previously separate lines are now together, looking like a paragraph, unless I have hit enter twice.

But I didn’t want a paragraph
to hem
to pen
together my words.
Just some spaces
as breaks.
So if you can retain them,
thanks.

I started writing “Morning Pages” in a notebook after reading “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron nearly 20 years ago and when I don’t do it, it seems there is a backup of mental clutter that hinders me from writing. When I pore out my thoughts concerning what I need to remember to do or process the dream I’ve had the night before, it clears the fog, so to speak and opens a channel of creativity. I am switching to typing for a season because I believe it will be like doing scales on the piano, signaling my brain that we are getting ready to work.

Writing daily at 750words became my life’s anchor almost four years ago. It helped me realize I’m a writer that has more discipline than I thought (I’ve missed only five days in that time). As I near 2 million words I must say that no other practice has helped keep me focused on my goals more than this. Writing daily is a game changer. Give it a shot. It worked (and continues to work) for me. Get going.

My last two books have come from my gushings on 750 Words. Presently I’m working on a third. What I do is look for a theme over a six month or year period, transfer them over to a folder on my desktop and revise from there. Thank you Buster and Kellianne for such a wonderful, helpful website.

750 words is central to my life. The blank page is my find, It listens to me and takes down everything I type and it does not judge me or try to suggest solutions . It is just there for me. I feel more at home writing, alone, since I am never alone. The endless blankness of th page seem kind and generous to me. It is never bored.

Hello, there are 4050 members today, and multiplying that by 12 and by 5, it seems there is a profit of around $243,000. Changing it to 4 dollars would mean 194,440, $3 to 145,800. I am asking for varied price range, so that those who can continue to contribute 5 or more can do so, an that there can be options for those with less. Thank you, have a good day.

Search by stats?

Could the Search feature be expanded to allow us to find all days on which particular stats scores occurred, ie, all my Extrovert days or all my Positive days?

Since I’ve come back after my break, I’ve decided to let go of expectations, and take my days as they come, so when yesterday got complicated and exhausting, instead of forcing myself to write, I let go of it and embraced my new egg status. Actually felt good, and here I am today, writing.

750 words is better and cheaper than a therapist. I cannot even begin to describe how much daily journaling on this site changed my life. I tried to journal regularly many times before, on pen and paper, in Word, on other online platforms, but it never stuck. I am not sure what is different with 750 words, but it just fits me so well.

Writing 750 words daily helped me believe in myself again; if I can commit to this action, I can slowly start improving my life in other areas without giving up.

750 words helped me to discipline my mind into being “inspired” regularly.

Though I haven’t always been consistent over the years, I have always returned to 750 words during the most difficult times in my life to write and process my feelings. I began in 2010, and now in 2018 as I look back over my old journal entries, I am able to see how much I have grown and think back on all the challenges that I have overcome along the way. I am so grateful that this site is still around and that I am able to revisit from time to time to write and reflect.

Actually the feature I’d like is the ability to retrieve a lost account with an email address I no longer have, and forgot the password.

750words.com might have actually saved my PhD thesis. Or at least made me finish it successfully. Since the day I this site, I haven’t skipped a day and can’t see why this would stop anytime soon. It’s amazing how almost every time after around 250 words my mind starts focussing and sorting out the mess in my head (and there was a big mess in my mind during that final PhD stage, let me tell you that).

I’ve actually written it down many times during my morning pages, now I’d like to make it public: thank you so much for creating this site and designing it in such a beautiful and simple, yet playful manner. Don’t you ever stop! :-)

Chat Room -- Right Here

I would love to connect with people who are doing the same thing I’m doing — writing 750 words per day (or more, or for a specific purpose). I just made it to writing 50 days in a row, and at this point, I’m wondering if I’ve emptied out a lifetime of brain detritus. Do I have anything else to say? We could talk about how our lives and our writing are affected by this discipline, what detracts us, etc. We can inspire each other when our commitment is faltering.

Tonight I am a Night Bat! Today, I am a man! I can’t believe how much getting the badge pleases me. 750 Words helped turn my anger and bitterness to always being stuck on night shifts , to making the night beckoning. What alchemy is this?

An alternative to self-important?

This is a very minor thing. It hurts my feelings whenever I’m told that according to my words I am feeling mostly self-important! I mean, it’s my diary, surely it’s okay to make it all about me? “Self-important” sounds officious and blustery. I’d love to see it called something else— self-reflective? self-focused? Thanks for the chance to give feedback. And thank you for the site— I love it and can’t wait to hit 100 days.

is that a bug or a piece of rice? oh, okay- rice. good. Hot in here. where was I? oh- words, yeah… great site, love the badges, and dumping thoughts, practicing presence and noticing and describing, like the way my wrist hurts at the moment and I really want more coffee but I’ll just finish this first, and man, it’s quiet in here, except for the sound of kids going by outside and somebody taking in their garbage cans. what a clatter, oh and that is a truck going by, with a roar and a crunch of snow, I don’t really want to go outside today but oh, well. what did i want to say? yes! this site is great. Really helpful and good practice. Gets me into the habit of habits and makes it hard for me to read the drivel i have written and then get all critical and stop because its not perfect but when I do write something ‘good’ I cut and paste it and then use it maybe to do something else later. Useful. i think i said that already. Thanks : )

As a graduate student, writing can be elusive at times and, as a person, life does not always go as expected or wanted causing stress and decreasing motivation to write. Also, as a person who ruminates a lot, I often find it difficult to focus because my mind will not be quiet.

I learned about this site at a dissertation writing seminar as a way to stimulate writing, but it has been so much more. The explanation and justification for this site is perfect and the way that it is designed and the tools that are available have really encouraged me to try it and to continue writing. This site has become a place where I can quiet my mind, by unloading – with no rules – and then have the freedom to think about what ever I would like to think about the rest of the day (even if it is fantasizing about what I will write about on 750words.com the next day). I have built some rules around my writing, like I only allow myself to write on the site once a day, which is very doable considering that it only takes me 20 minutes to write 750 words. The time writing everyday has become my sacred time where I can explore every inch of my mind while being tethered to the present which has had a great positive impact on reducing my ruminating and increasing my ability to focus. Additionally, writing about the day’s events helps me to process my stress, figure out viable solutions or at the very least, unburden my mind.

750words.com is very dynamic and tailorable with plenty of reward systems (badges, challenges, acknowledgment of word goal achievement, etc) and ways to engage in a social capacity while still having my work remain as private as I would like it to be. The analysis of the entry is a nice touch too because it allows me to evaluate and know what I have written without going back to read over it. The no rules part is liberating because it allows me to just write; I don’t have to think about sentence structure or typos or other things that might slow me down while writing. While I often write in the morning, having the whole day to accomplish the goal allows me to have flexibility. My life has changed in unexpected ways as I am able to focus better and understand myself better, regarding my goals, attributes, weaknesses, and how I plan to move forward. Thirty-seven days in and still going strong.

750 Words was there for me when I was at my lowest. I was in the middle of my undergrad, struggling with mental illness at the time, and my sister had found this site and recommended it to me. I signed up, and then the next day 750 Words started charging new members to join and I received a free life time membership. I took this as a sign that writing would be good for me, and for my mental health. Whenever I was struggling, whenever I was so caught up in my head with self-deprecating thoughts that I could not tell what was true or not, I was able to go on to 750 and write out whatever I was thinking. I found that just by putting down what was in my head on to a screen, I was able to separate myself from my illness, even if it was just for a little bit. This helped me tremendously. And it helped me process through so much emotional baggage. I do not use the site all that much anymore, but I know it is here for me when I need it.

I have used this practice as therapy, writing my day and my thoughts every day for more than 555 days. It has kept me alive, while I sorted through some seriously depressed and depressing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder stuff. Thank you for keeping a space that I feel safe to write in, and for having incentives to keep me alive.

I have been a longtime fan of The Artists Way and when I came across 750.org I immediately signed up for the free 30-day trial. I rocked it but when it ran out and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to commit financially. It wasn’t a lot, but commitment isn’t my strong suit. I noticed that I missed my practice and even doing it on a plain doc I missed the algorithms and the praise with little emojis. Today I just signed on and committed myself to what is a great way for me to start the day. Committing to the pages, being able to check that off my list and working on my writing practice. Looking forward to writing my first 750 of 2018.
