The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I am so grateful to 750words for this place to write and to analyze my writing. 2017 brought up SO MANY FEELINGS and thoughts and this was the best place to write them down. I am proud of myself for how much I have written, and I’m grateful to 750words for helping me track it all.

In my experience so far of using 750 Words, I’ve been able to start my day in a way that really helps me see what’s on my mind, and what’s bothering me. Vocalizing my feelings and inadequacies gets increasingly more difficult as I get older (I am currently twenty-seven years old), and writing them down first thing in the morning is almost like therapy for me. I’ve gone through many traumatic experiences over the years and have needed therapy, but have not been able to afford it. I have been re-constructing on my own, therefore, and 750 Words has really been very effective in this re-construction of myself. So far, I’ve been able to define the ways that I feel on a day-to-day basis, I’ve been able to identify behavioral patterns, and I’ve been able to knock down many of my demons and triggers in the process. It’s increased my mental stability, honestly, and I don’t think I’ll ever give it up. I am a writer, as well, and forcing myself to write down whatever is first and foremost on my mind every morning really gets my motor going on creating new stories. I have never actually finished a novel of any kind, but I do write poetry and short stories, and since starting 750 words I have written two short stories that I am very proud of. I also struggle with writing in the present tense when I am creating a story of any kind, and it’s becoming much easier now that I am vocalizing every morning, albeit quietly and through this site.
As I previously stated, I should have been involved in some sort of therapy years ago, but I have always written in order to slough off the emotional baggage of my past and move on. I never realized that writing every day was essential to this, otherwise I would have been doing it! I have kept several hundreds of journals, honestly, but have never been able to keep up with them religiously like I have this. The accountability involved really helps with that. I think it’s an excellent program, and I’ve mentioned it to many of my fellow writers that I am friends with. Such writers as Ray Bradbury have even mentioned that a process that forces you to write and read daily can only help you create new and vibrant content of your own. I am hoping that 750 Words helps me to finish an idea that I’ve created, from start to finish. It’s a commitment, but so is this, and it’s made me aware that I am capable of keeping such a commitment. I am also able to see what things I focus on, in general, and it encourages me to maybe change my mindset now and then. The process also encourages me to be more honest about the ways that I’m feeling because I’m forced to confront them on a screen every day.
This is essential to the grieving process.
I hope to keep doing this as much as I possibly can, in order to keep progressing in such a way. I have never been so clear-headed and reaped so many benefits. Thank you, 750 Words. You’ve done a great deal of good. :)

Improve the monthly stats page

Is there already a monthly stats page? If so I can’t find it. Anyway, I’d love to be able to see the same screen I see daily for a month, as I find it really interesting to see the analysis of what I mostly write about/focus on. I’m trying to improve myself so knowing what I’m writing about and who and so on is really important

Customizable End-of-Day Deadline

Instead of basing the “day’s over” deadline on midnight (which drives some of us night owls to frantically adjust our time zones to accommodate), it would be really nice to just be able to set the time manually when we go to bed. I know my sleep schedule’s garbage, but darnit, I always do get the writing done!
I lost a 190-day streak to this (the DST switch caught me off-guard), and I haven’t been able to maintain a streak since. It’s actually getting really demoralizing, so I’m putting all my cups into this one request. The streak motivation is honestly why I use 750words—without it, it just feels like I’m throwing money away, and I’m not sure I can keep going. :(

Daily journaling has consistently been a struggle for me, it’s such a daunting task to write something powerful, or inspiring, or philanthropic. Something that my future self can look back on and think “Wow, she really has it figured out!”. With this kind of pressure on myself I usually don’t ever journal. But 750 Words is different for me in that it’s relatively short, sweet, and free writing. No pressure. And surprisingly when I look back through my past postings, they are much more enjoyable to read than my other deep, lengthy soul searching entries. It’s just life!

I did start writing not thinking at anything, until I realized I was creating a world of magic and fairies around me. Today the 750 words is like entering another world, and soon i will publish my first fairy tale. I feel blessed

I think the daily commitment of this site is what has changed things the most for me. I used to feel despairing if I missed a few days…and then life would get in the way. But now I don’t judge, don’t despair. I simply get things done. Thank you for your site!

Sorting

While the Search feature on the Wall of Awesomeness, Wall of Shame, and the Challenge pages are lovely (love the horses!), it would be much better if there was a way to sort – alphabetizing, shortest to longest names, something so that you can see all the names, without searching and showing just one specific name.
Thank you for considering this :-)

I am a Veteran, bi-polar, objectivist, artist, and as you can imagine, these combinations of things are quite vexing at their simplest forms. This site has given me the ability to look at my thought stream in an analytical process, and separate the negative words and thoughts in the most basic form. It has been enlightening, to say the least. On top of sorting my thoughts from one another and seeing them in graph format, I have been able to re-set a regiment type of schedule for myself, which I had only been offered in the armed forces. It has been the re-budding of a long remnant root, and I can see the leaves of green. I have never been more thrilled to subscribe to something monthly, and cannot sing the praises enough. I will be using it with my therapist/psychiatrist to aid in future analytical evaluations!

I love 750 words! It has helped me get a glimpse of what I could do as a novelist if I just write every day. I have found clarity in writing down all of my thoughts, and I especially love all of the stats.
Keep up the great work everyone, and thanks to all the people who make this site possible. :)

I’ve been with 750words since it started in 2009. I had been trying to do 750 words longhand while sole parenting 2 toddlers and because it took me over an hour to do I didn’t do it very often. Until a friend told me about this site. It is part of my daily morning routine, cup of coffee by my side. Most often I use it to write about my night dreams – a core part of my spiritual life – or to work out difficult problems in my life. It’s refreshing for this perfectionist to not have to worry about typos or grammar and to just do a brain dump as fast as my fingers can go (they can never keep up with my mind). I’ve never been able to go a year without a missing a day and while that was discouraging the first few times – I really wanted those badges! – especially because it was always due to circumstances outside of my control, I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter. Everyone knows that “morning words” is what I do and having this habit is what’s most important. I’ve been able to rant and cuss and say things I’d never say out loud in order to come back to a difficult person or situation in a calm, collected, and emotionally healthy manner. This site has changed my life for the better. Thank you!

Word counter position

Hi. This is not exactly a feature request, but simply a tweak to the word counter. Whenever I reach the bottom of the screen, I have to scroll down to see the word counter. It’s a really small detail, but it’s just an annoyance. There is plenty of space on the side of the screen, maybe fix the count to the bottom right of the screen so it never disappears? Other than that, great job with the site, I really enjoy it.

Sounds

I would deeply appreciate the addition of typewriter sounds to this application. I find that they increase my ability to concentrate on writing. For those of us who have associated keyboard or typing sounds with creative writing, it would be one more psychological boost to our writing. Furthermore, when I ut headphones on with typewriter sounds, the level of background noise in my environment is less distracting, and it works better than white noise or music.

Thanks for considering. :-)

750words API

I think it would be great (if it doesn’t exist already) to have a 750words API that can be used to interact programmatically with the system. Recently I have been switching to org-mode in Emacs to do my technical writing, and I also use Scrivener on the Mac to organize my books, keep my journal (a subset of which sometimes I post to 750words) and other things. With an API, I might give a try to 750words plugins for org-mode and Scrivener, and it would open a lot of possibilities for interaction with other applications.

If such an API already exists, is there some documentation about it somewhere?

Thanks in advance! And as usual, thanks for all your work on this fantastic tool.

My new “writer`s life” started at November 4th. Never before I wrote so many days in a row and the best thing is: I`m not afraid anymore, I could write bullshit. Before I came here, I did more editing (every sentence) then writing, it drove me crazy and was so dissapointing all the time. Now I can write, write, and write – that`s a real gift to me, I´m SO thankful for! ♥

Sorry, I´m not a native english speaker, hope, you understand, what I wanted to say.

Have a wonderful and inspiring day, everyone! :)

750 words saved my writers soul.

I struggled for a long time to build a daily writing habit. With four kids, homeschooling, and running a household, many things press me for my time and writing always fell by the wayside. Thanks to 750words and the monthly challenge, I am writing every day and the words are flowing like never before! Thank you!

The single biggest thing I’ve noticed: I have increased clarity about my personal life and vision, and for that I am grateful, as I have been dinking around with this for some time…and I’m realizing that I need to get.on.the.path. It’s not the destination…it’s the journey and I seem to more fully and completely understand that now as a result of my writing. YAY!!!!
