The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

750 words is a cool idea. My new year’s resolution was to write more – so far this app is helping me form the habit.

Clearer navigation

I sometimes find it difficult to find certain pages (I love a stat). Particularly the one which shows my current points score. Perhaps it’s just me, but I think the navigation could be clearer.

It’s not bad, I feel it could be better. Just a thought.

Writing is like everything else, you need to practice and get into a routine to get improve. I heard a quote recently which went something like this: “Just because you have a gym membership, doesn’t mean you’ll be in the next Olympics.”

750words.com has become a place to me to get into a routine and practice every day. I know I’m getting better and seeing this improvement is making my life better. I really feel as though I’m achieving something worthwhile.

Thanks.

New Page Option

Having a tab for a new page if you want to write something new or different that is unrelated to what you just wrote? Perhaps that’s just a preference thing, but I always like starting fresh when I write one thing of my chest and something else takes its place and I want to write more, but start from the beginning.

Green and blue stars?

What do the green and blue stars next to a writer’s name mean?

Since joining 750words in November 2015, I have aimed to write every day. However, I haven’t quite made it – but hitting 97% of days and being just over half a million words is close enough thus far.

I use the morning words idea, but keep that part short. Then ‘the rest’ I use to hash out ideas for articles. I usually formalise one article every two days or so, which has kept my blog posting list well ahead.

750words also helps me tease out my thoughts for peer-reviewed academic articles and for my PhD (just starting).

All in all, THANK YOU, Kellianne and Buster. You have provided me with the space to write every day. This has allowed me to understand that it only takes a bit over a year to write half a million words, and that I have tenacity… which has now segued into doing my PhD.

Mwah, mwah.

I love 750 words! It’s a way to be committed to my goal, to write every day. The plain page with no distractions is awesome.

Once you’ve been around a while, the stretches can get long. It’d be nice to still have goals other than “another day” and “more words”.

OR a better mobile site? I just want to be able to write in bed or when a compute isn’t near. I’m trying to develop better habits. Thanks for doing what you do

Today it’s been 547 days in a row and I really really didn’t want to write. I have a fever and am dealing with some family bull and I was just not having it but I did. I DID IT. So far I’ve written through a car accident, family illness and stressful days. This site works. Thanks so much.

Choose a badge

I’d love to be able to choose a non-streak badge to display during the long stretches between streak badges. For example, I currently have The Albatross but it’s going to be over two months until I get to the next streak badge, so I’d rather display The Early Rooster or one of the Flock badges in the meantime.

And more badges to earn in general would be awesome. =)

A better mobile site

I’m splitting hairs…this site is great. A more frictionless mobile experience would be great. But this site is already fantastic.

Offline App/Tracking

I’ve gone on vacation where WiFi access is spotty and lost my writing streaks because I don’t have internet access – and there seems to be no way around this! Maybe a premium option where members could show that they have written offline and this syncs without losing progress! Thanks <3

Theme/mood/vocab badges? Things based on the analytics. And maybe an option to show/hide content badges?

Also maybe horses of many colors for those who complete multiple month challenges—separate from the longer bird badges. So right now I’m a Pterodactyl, I wouldn’t need all those horses, but let’s say each calendar year gets a different color horse, or a different color for each month. If by year like car tabs, it could be “Member earned four golden horses this year!” or if by month: “Member has been a golden horse for two of the three Aprils she’s been a member.” But that would only apply to people who do not have a longer streak.

Writing here every day gives me a clarity that is extraordinarily valuable. With all the clutter in my mind, filtering it to my writing here has made me happier, more focused and more productive. Thanks for this great site!

Writing today made me aware of a sadness deeply buried in me. I’m crying and I’m sad, really sad. But I feel a lot more alive than before. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to reconnect with myself.

In a way, doing 750 words is an inexpensive form of therapy. I’ve learned lots of things about forming new habits as well as how I behave and respond to things.

Hello fellow writers,
I have been here for 11 months, sporadically writing, a bunch of slashes and a few ’X’s’ – a little like my bowling results! But today, I noticed my points hit 40 for the first time which means I’m being more consistent. I have yet to hit 30 days in a row. So that is my next goal!!

I started with 750Words in 2009, but then left for a while. I felt I lost my muse. Recently I remembered just how helpful having this site was, so I returned. Having a site that is easy to use, without lots of hoops to jump through, encourages me to use it every day… thoughts, notes, ideas, rants, raves, a little bit of everything.
