The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Have not written this much, this consistently, since, well, FOREVER. Binge writing is out, routine is in. Am making daily progress on my PhD work as well as on some other less work-ey things I want to just bash out. It’s the first thing I do every morning when I get up. Roll out of bed, make breakfast, drink a cup of tea and settle down to two separate rounds of 750words. After I’m done, I already feel like everything else that day is a bonus.

Writing is such a solitary process, but 750words.com not only makes me feel like part of a community, but gives me a reason to write every night. I’m thrilled to have found this website, and hope my cup of coffee is put to good use.

750 Words has allowed me to learn how to forgive myself and move on…whenever I mean to finish a chapter or draft a new blog entry and don’t get to it, I at least feel productive when I have logged in my 750 Words. Most of the time, my entries present me with ideas for potential stories and sometimes actual skeletons of one. I used to have to write by hand to produce and then edit when I type. Now I can spit out 3 pages in one sitting directly into the computer so productivity is much higher. Thanks 750 Words!

The last month has been the biggest essay-writing challenge of my life, so a chance to clear my mind and write a little bit of fiction every day has quite possibly stopped me going mad. So, thank you.

Buster, I don’t know if I write any better because of this site, but I definitely write more! I’m certain that with prolific writing will some day come good writing. Thank you for the opportunity to improve myself.

Suffering from depression and working a stressful and sometimes incredibly emotional job where I have to keep just about everything that occurs confidential, 750 Words has become my biggest and best outlet for channeling my thoughts and emotions on a daily basis.

More badges for accomplishments

First, I’m wondering whether there are badges that are not documented on the News page about the Badges … since that seems to indicate it’s not updated regularly. If so, could it please be updated so we know what we’re shooting for?

Aside from having a few more milestones between 100 and 200, 200 and 365, 365 and 500 consecutive days of writing, I would like to request somehow tracking EACH time a milestone was achieved. For example, if a person earns the turquoise horse for completing a one-month challenge, and then completes a second one-month challenge, could the badge show the date of the second achievement as well (and subsequent ones, too)? If I write 50k words in each of several months, it would be cool to have that noted on the achievements page under the badge….

Thank you for considering!

I’ve learned so much about writing, about myself, and about motivation, in the last six months since joining 750words.com.

Warm regards!

As a college student, I spend a lot of time writing. I spend a lot of time writing things I don’t want to write. Having an opportunity, and better yet—a challenge, to write about the things that matter to me is so important for my personal growth and development. It gives me a chance to air my thoughts and think things through. I don’t know where I would be without my 750 words each and every day.

I did NaNoWriMo but couldn’t keep it up in college. All my attempts to cultivate a daily writing habit went nowhere. After 2 months, 750 words has gotten me writing more than I have in the past year and a half. A genius, well-implemented site. Thank you!

New Badges

I have an idea for a couple of new badges. One would be, the streak between 30 days and 100 days seems really long. Something in between would be nice, maybe 50-75 so that it’s kind of an incentive to keep going.

The second idea would be to have a badge where you write exactly 750 words without going over for a certain amount of time, 3 days, 5 days, a week, or whatever.

Also, I just want to say that I love this site because it’s fun to earn badges and a good way to clear your mind at the end of the day!!

750words has taught me to not be afraid of the blank page. I always wanted to write, but never really found time and energy before. I’m much more courageous now, thanks to 750words.com. Thanks a lot!

I once read somewhere that there is indeed a science behind the phrase “practice makes perfect”; most people who are considered a ‘master’ at their craft have put in an average of 10,000 hours of practice. Since I want to be an author when I grow up, 750 words is a great way to encourage me to keep practicing and to write, write, write!

This site has inspired me to keep my promise to myself to write. I have thought many times that I should do it, but I journal intermittently. The site and the silly badges are fantastic ways to motivate myself to do this. I write every day and I hope to continue my streak for a long time. Thanks, Buster, for creating this site!

When I signed up for the March challenge, I had absolutely no idea what an amazing effect it would have on my life.
Writing my 750 words each day not only cleared my mind, but also helped me to learn about myself and how I view life in ways that I’d never understood before. Through my daily words, I formed new opinions and came to conclusions on issues and emotions that I’d been struggling with. I also opened up to myself about things that I had been afraid to write down on paper or on public blogs, feeling that they were too personal. Here, however, I felt comfortable and safe with letting them come out, which was an immense relief.
Reading back through all of my entries at the end of last month gave me a sense of pride – not only in my accomplishment of completing the March challenge, but also in seeing how much I had developed as a person in just four short weeks. I believe that life is a class in which you learn how to create yourself as a work of art, and I can think of no better way to track one’s progress than 750 free-flowing words a day. Even though the March challenge is over, I’m going to continue writing every single day, and I don’t plan on ever stopping.

I’m not always good at writing every day, but his month, the first in many, I made it through. 750words is my therapist, my vent screen, idea notebook, diet log, to-do list manager: my encourager. The goofy badges and daily emails help, but it’s the streaks that are most rewarding. If I can do it, you can. And if you’re curious to see what I’ve been working toward, in terms of poetry, art, and photography, look here: http://adrianacgrant.tumblr.com/archive

It feels so good to be able to finish a whole month straight of writing. I don’t think I would be able to do it with the little rewards that this site gives. Also, the timed portion of it makes me write faster. I’ve once hit 113 words per minute of indecipherable writing.

I love 750 words because I can write easily and have the little badges and a record of perfection to maintain. I really respond to things like that. I’ve set my goal at 1000 words per day so I clear my mind and then brainstorm on what I want to write about. Before getting on this site, I was having trouble getting myself motivated to write. Now the required brainstorming helps me decide how I want to write the next scene.

I’ve found that making sure I have personal time to write daily simultaneously ensured I also had time to maintain sanity as well (as an insanely busy undergraduate commuter student).

I wish there was an easy way or listing to go through your previous days/months writings instead of having to click on each square to see. Also, I think the interface since it meant to look like you are in a closed empty room, needs to look nicer. I think it would ne nice to look at Ommwriter to see how they solve this problem so beautifully. A little bit of thoughtful design can go a long way in customer loyalty.

I’m deLIGHTed to know that by having completed the challenge, I’m contributing to literacy. That’s just an added bonus. The first bonus was the actual satisfaction. And I just realized that in order to have an added bonus, one has to have one before that.

Anyway. Thank you for this site.
