The Friends & Members of 750 Words

I love this site. For some reason, it is more freeing that using my word processor to write. I need to see the word count at the bottom of the page without having to do anything special in order to get that information. It encourages me to write at least 750 words and many times I have struggled to write that much, but I persevered. I like knowing that I cannot go back and edit what I have written once the day has ended.

It might sound silly, but the points and the badges keep me going. I find them encouraging. I also like the statistics page. I have found that my typing speed has improved since I started writing on this site.

I finally managed to complete a monthly challenge and I feel good about it. I have also written over 100,000 words. It would be nice if all of those words were part of a novel, but they aren’t. However, I have used this site to make story notes, keep track of my health issues, and to vent about things that are happening in my life that I have no control over. It helps to keep me sane.

Just want to say that I appreciate you guys and this site. I’m a patron and will remain so, but I think you just got a life time of good kharma for what you did when you grandfathered folks in. I’ll bet you will get more patrons who, like myself, just appreciate what you do regardless and who want to pay for the service we so value. This site is a wonderful place to just record your thoughts and to finally create the habit of daily writing. I’m on a 173 day streak and have no intention of quitting any time soon if ever. I am so grateful that you are giving current users free memberships. I love the site but my budget didn’t allow for paying for it, so I had planned to move to a different site. I know I will donate at some point in the future when my budget is a little looser. Thank you for making it so I can stay and keep writing! I am very appreciative!

I started writing at 750 Words while I was in the middle of separation and divorce of my 30 year marriage. Writing helps to get the thoughts organized and to release all the worries on to the page. I was still a mess, but I believe I was healthier for writing!

I am also one of those who read “The Artist’s Way” years ago, and tried several times to do morning pages. Now I’m more successful at doing those pages, and it’s fueled my creative life as an artist. I’ll continue to subscribe because I get a great return on my little investment here :)

I am, as Daphne Merkin put it in The New York Times, afflicted with avoidance. And yet, the goofy badges and timely emails and encouraging tone do get me to write. Maybe not every day, and not always 750 words, but more than my still silent notebook ever has.

This is a thank you note to Buster for making 750words.com the place he wanted it to be, and for being generous with his time and his intentions. And for making us early adopters feel part of his insider club, by granting us free lifetime memberships. I was ready to pay, and did pay, for a year of memberships, but I am tickled, and feel spoiled, to be invited into this site as a founding member.

I honestly don’t remember the last time I’ve written so much in a single month. It’s been years since I’ve done so and I finally started doing it again. This website has helped me get back into the flow of writing again, and although I may mess up, I’m able to get back into doing it again the next day.

Thank you for creating this site! I love that I can log in any time and have a safe, private place to write. I think you definitely should charge for the site. I think it is great that you are giving existing customers free privileges but you are doing a lot of work, and you need to be balanced in what you give and receive. I love this website. I have also long been a fan of Julia Cameron’s morning pages, but as much as i do like writing in longhand, I do not like having the piled up notebooks with the writing. I love having this electronic resource.

Thank you, Buster and Kellianne, for grandfathering members. Your generosity itself seems to have ignited my own and i just signed up to be a paying member. (I wonder if there is something in Kahneman’s book that explains this phenomenon, Buster?)

I think the transition plan makes sense. One question I would like you to address: are patrons members? Is that what you mean by membership?

An iPad/Android app that would log the time when we wrote our words and upload it to the site when we log in. This could be useful if, for whatever reason, we were unable to get online on any particular day.

Badges are a great incentive, but at 754 days I’m not sure there’s any more for me to aim for. More day badges, more word total badges…anything to help keep us going!

This site has gotten me back on track with my writing, which suffered from trying to write to please other people. I’m having fun writing again, which I’ve always thought is one of the most important parts of the process.

Thank you very much for providing a friendly and encouraging environment in which to write every day. I already wrote into paper journals (and still do) but this site has been an excellent way to encourage myself to maintain consistency with checking in each day, and I enjoy the notion of it all being stored digitally in one place for me to look back on.
