The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I’ve been trying to finish a novel, and 750 words gives me a place to write daily that isn’t blasted all over the internet. The system of keeping tabs on my activity encourages me to write more – and the badges are super cute.

750 words has gotten two novel written for me, and hopefully many more in the days to come. I’ve found this site more useful and effective than any other writing tools I’ve come across. Thanks!

Every day I have struggles of varying sizes and types. Doing my morning pages on this site helps me to reduce stress, and that will prevent illness and improve my mood. Thanks 750words.com for contributing to my wellness.

When I signed up for 750words, I thought I would use it to help me write my doctoral thesis – I could write three pages of my thesis every day and get done in no time. But I can never manage to write about my thesis here. Instead, I write song lyrics, I write “I’m stuck” over and over again, and I write nonsense. I’ve come to realize that this is actually good for my thesis: once I get the nonsense out of my head, it clears the way for my thesis writing for the day and helps me to be more productive. Maybe I will write something continuous for one of the monthly challenges some day, but for right now what I’m doing is working just fine. :)

Perhaps badges for the mood of your writing, for example coloured badges? Like pink if you write fluffy stuff, blue if its sad- it all ties in with the Eternity page :D

I love 750words. Even when I miss a day, I know that I’ve received the many benefits of clearing my mind. I like how this site is a place for me to empty my many thoughts. I can open up about anything, anyone, and I won’t be judged for it. At the same time, I practice my writing skills because 750words gives a subtle structure to my writing habits.

750words has been amazing for me. Honestly, it’s surprising because I’d assumed writing 750 words a day would be a start-stop situation for a while before I hit anything like a streak. But I started writing on Christmas Eve last year and haven’t looked back… well, let’s hope saying it out loud doesn’t jinx it :D All the people who make the Pegasus and Space Bird appear on “Today’s Writers”, you are truly inspiring. Thank you :)

I’m a longtime devotee of morning pages, but hate hauling around a notebook full of personal stuff. 750words makes it possible to sustain that practice without making my messenger bag heavier.

In January after writing with 750 Words for a month I started a Memoir Writing class through our local Senior University. I excitedly told my fellow students, who are all over the age of 65, of this marvelous site that encouraged daily writing and provided a fun motivation to continue writing our life stories. Many have followed my lead and are enjoying the site as well. Thank you!

In our busy schedules, with this busy society we often forget to take time for things that matter. We often give so much to others that we forget to strengthen ourselves. 750 words is the time you can use to strengthen emotions, clear the confusion and take care of yourself so that you can face the day better and take care of the beauty of life that awaits you.

I really love this site. Here, I can get out all those feelings and ideas not really meant to see the light of day—or at least, not yet—and work things out, I love when I’m busy exploring one idea, only to get a flash of inspiration for another. And here, I don’t have to worry about formatting and editing. All that can be done later after I’ve exported. Here, it’s only me and my thoughts.

So I messed up my 83 day streak on Saturday, February 25th. Totally spaced on doing my words on time – kept putting it off during the day. I have been angry at myself and avoiding writing here since then. I realized that this is something I typically do – get so focused on stats and doing something right or the way it “should” be that I neglect the larger goal and sabotage myself. I really want to take a stab at NaNoWriMo this year and I want to start writing those songs I’ve been saying I think I can write for the last 3-4 years. In order to do that, I need to be disciplined enough to write every day. But it doesn’t have to be within a certain time frame, nor a certain speed, nor do I have to compare myself to others. So I am back here, donating the amount I said I’d donate if I messed up the February challenge. And I’m re-committing to writing every day – regardless of what my stats say.

It has done what no other website or project has: success in creating a daily writing habit (yes, Stephen Pressfield, I’m on my way!)
Some days are better than others, but the creative days are winning ground.
I recommend 750words to everyone I know, to the extent of volunteering to translate everything into Spanish.
It’s a place to let loose on hopes, fears and excitement, figure out the next move. A daily highlight.

I have now been writing continuously for over 150 days and have written more than a quarter of a million words which is pretty awesome for me. But I have noticed something interesting. I am getting much faster in that getting my 750 words written rarely takes me longer than twenty minutes now because my stream of consciousness just seems to take over so that I am never lost for words they just keep coming. Thats why I love this site and the activity it encourages it is so creative and so useful.

With yesterday’s post, I finished six months of daily writing. At least 750 words a day (words, not literature)
I never thought I had it in me and it would never had happened without Buster and http://750words.com
Thanks a lot!
