The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I didn’t have time this afternoon to get home between two meetings to write my Words, but I knew that I wanted to get them in because I have another meeting tonight. I also didn’t have any portable device with me. Solution? I popped into a local library and I am keying this in on one of their public computers. How fabulous is it that this site is available in so many different ways. Their keyboard is slower than mine, but it’s free and it works. Bravo 750 Words and the public library system in this country!

I am a writer—at least, I keep telling myself I am—but what I mostly am is an editor. I can say with no false modesty that I’m actually a pretty good editor. Unfortunately, it’s a hard thing to turn off when I’m writing. 750Words is helping me learn to do that. I appreciate the many ease-of-use features you’ve implemented: the word count popup, the linguistic analysis, the statistics. That makes it sound like I’m still obsessing like an editor, but actually having everything at my fingertips helps me relax. I don’t have to hand-count anything, don’t have to reinvent the wheel, don’t have to reread and criticize myself. I can just settle into the writing process. Thanks for that.

Whether or not I can manage every day, whether or not I do pen-and-paper days that don’t give me badges, 750 Words reminds me every day to use my voice and that is invaluable.

What with all these changes I can’t actually see if I am a subscriber or a patron or how many paid months I have left, but I’m assuming Kellianne & co. are working on an interface for that as I type this.

Thank you for all you do. I think grandfathering in current subscribers with free accounts was a fantastic idea—I’m sure it made things more difficult on your end but you felt strongly that it was the right thing to do, so you did it, and that’s just awesome.

I appreciate the honesty that I face each time I have let time slip by without writing on 750. I look at the empty boxes and will myself to get back on the horse and gallop the rest of the month. I am grateful to be reminded that now is always a good time to get back to writing. After all, I can’t call myself a writer if a day goes by without words.

This is actually a go-and-ahead-and-pay-my-debt note, since I managed to fail this particular monthly challenge on the second day of the month. Yes, there were extenuating circumstances, but the debt needs to be paid. But I find 750 Words so helpful as a means of clearing my brain that I’m going to try to get through the rest of May with no more stumbles. Thanks for the badges and incentives, 750 Words: they keep me motivated to write!

It’s a sanctuary. Let all of the pain and the gratitude just spill out of my fingers onto the keyboard into this pot. How it helps!

I’m so happy to have this site to return to. There is something about the formality of the format that is engaging. Something about the result being put out in the world even if it is only for me to read that is very different than my writing and saving something in Word. I like it. That is me today with this site. Thanks for continuing to make it happen. Proud to be a patron.

I actually got a job thanks to 750 words. I was able to tell my potential boss honestly that I’d written at least 750 words every day for more than a year. It helped. Sadly, now that I’m writing daily in my job, my writing on 750 words has dropped off. I hope to get back to it soon. Thanks, Buster. You helped me a LOT with this site.

I write at the end of the day. I look forward to being able to say exactly what I think, to make sense or nonsense, to babble, to repeat myself, to struggle, to soar, to save myself here and now.

Unlike some blogging/journaling sites, the atmosphere of 750w has allowed me to be raw, honest, and most importantly: unedited. There’s no pressure to be polished, and I’m not bogged down and obsessive over formatting and flow. I now just write, “brain dump” as I sometimes call them, and worry about sculpting later.

It’s a long stretch between some of these badges (though I’m really looking forward to my phoenix!). It would also be super-cool if we could choose which badge to display with our profile.

I have been using 750 words for 5 days now. It is really awesome, and I am looking forward to developing my skills as a writer. I am hoping to earn the 500 day badge, and the 250,000 words badge. Lofty goals! Thanks for building such a great website.

I just finished my first full year on 750 words. It has been life changing and I am so grateful I found this site! I missed 6 days of writing this year and plan a perfect record during my 2nd year. Thanks so much.

I dropped out of the April challenge and I promised to donate some extra money to 750words if I do so, so that’s what I’m doing and adding this to the June challenge bounty

Hello 750 words!! I just wanted to post something here saying how glad I am that I joined this page and how it really helps my writing. These monthly challenges finally give me the motivation I needed to write each and every day.

I’ve been a member of 750 Words for nearly a week now and it has inspired me to get to it, or perhaps more appropriately, got back to it. I’ve written my 750+ words each day and will continue to do so. After my 750 here I’ve gotten back to an unfinished piece I hope to finish. This site has energized me and given me a group of people with whom I can share successes and I assume will encourage me on days when that is needed as well.

I’m a graduate student struggling to make headway in my dissertation. 750words has given me a sustainable and manageable goal to work towards – while I’m not always sure that I can write a dissertation, I can certainly write 750 words each day (even if they aren’t always about anything academic). 40 days in, and I’m feeling so much better about writing.

Thanks, Buster and Kellianne, for figuring out how to keep my favorite site open. This place has saved my sanity more times than I can count. Good luck with the new system, and may everyone support it and you moving forward!

Being stuck on the albatross for 70 days before getting a new badge for days in a row is frustrating. I would love a new bird or two to sit in the middle of those long stretches!
