The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I stopped writing for a couple of months when they said it was going to be paid-only. However, my writing died off to almost nothing :( I really missed my daily nudge and I really missed the simplicity of the site and watching the streaks pile up. So I paid some cash and I hope I can stay on here much longer because this keeps my brain drained of the gunk and keeps me creative.

I can put it all out of my mind, all the shame, the sadness and the secret joys. They’re all here somewhere, they’re out in the world, they’ve turned into words, into something tangible. And most important is that, at least for the day, they’re not hiding in my mind.

I joined 750 words to remind me to write just a little every day, and I did well for a while. It helps me keep my mind clear. Then… stuff happened, and I stopped writing, along with other things that are good for me.

I recently joined a group that is interested in taking better care of themselves, and I came here to write out my confusion. In 750 words, I have a great idea of how this week went, and where I need to put my energy. Thank you, and thank you for the weekly reminders that kept me thinking of you during my long absence.

Today, April 13, 2013, I got the Space Bird Badge—500-day streak! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! And the miracle? The badge showed up IMMEDIATELY on my stats page—it was right there! Buster and Kellianne have oiled the machine, and thanks!! But it is a happy day, now what to do to celebrate a Space Bird?!! To cheer on this site that makes daily writing so much fun!

Having a set goal and a time to do it seems daunting but I’ve done it before and I can do it again. The site makes it incredibly easy.

750 words helped me finish my MA Creative writing project and is massively fun and inspiring. I love collecting adorable badges, come on, we all do, right?

I love this site. It is so simple, focused, and easy-to-use. I’m a sporadic user, and will write daily for weeks at a time, and then neglect it for a few months. I feel better when I’m writing.

I saw the post on the site updates, and allowing all existing users to have free lifetime accounts is amazing. That is irrefutable proof that these changes are not driven out of a desire for profit. It inspired me to donate for the first time.

Thank you for all you have done over the years.

I’m an egg again.
The first time that happened I was sad and anxious.
Today, just surprised that it was still possible to miss a day, grateful for my writing habit, and more fully aware of its benefits.
Thanks for the space. It works.

I think you made a really great decision on how to handle the transition. I have not seen sites with such heart.

I hadn’t used this site in awhile and now that I’m back, I’m relaxed and happy. This is a no muss, no fuss site, no issues, just log in and write.
The new changes are more than generous and even though I will be a lifetime member, I donated as I will continue to do.

Thanks for this site.

750 Words is absolutely fabulous. Been looking for something like this for a while now. I love writing “sketches” every day to keep my head clear, brainstorm and do some warm up writing before the serious stuff. This site is perfect for this and keeps you disciplined in a nice way. Great work, keep it up!

To me, being able to use this site to track my mood, frame of mind, and world view is incredibly valuable. No one else offers this in such a streamlined form. Any additional features in this vein would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for the opportunity you have provided for existing members to continue without charge. I was prepared to give financial support and will do so beginning in May. I have always been a writer, but mostly in my head. Since I discovered 750 Words, especially in recent months, I have become an active writer. I am on a 73-day streak and this is my third challenge month. I don’t know if I would keep the habit without the nudge and incentive of this web site. Thank you.

Improve Export

It would be nice to download a zip file with all your writing to-date, as well as zip files for each year. It would also be nice if they could be formatted in both .txt and .xml formatting – so if you wanted to import your writing into a blog form or more easily into a book.

Why isn’t there a sex category? Like, how is it that I can write an entry that’s 90% about sex and it says I’m mostly concerned with eating/drinking, success, and leisure? That’s kinda weird. Awesome site, though, thanks!

The faster i write and the less restraint i have, the better i write. This site is the home of the shaggy, growling and menacing first drafts of my poems.
Fifteen or twenty minutes is all it takes to get 750 words, but when i am done the sun is shining a bit brighter despite the clouds or the rain.

Coming back after over a year, I feel encouraged that you are still here. Still emailing me gentle reminders, still here with my password, my old words, a page waiting for new ones. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. $5/month is a tiny price to pay for the gift that is 750 words.

I’ve been writing, off and on, for the past ten years or so, morning pages, those pages from The Artist’s Way. But at some point, I fell off . . . and stopped writing. But lately, I felt the need to write, to work out some projects (plays, screenplays) that I’m working on, and some emotional stuff, and sitting down to write in a journal isn’t working. Coming here to write, to write those 750 words, has helped me to develop my work, and to creatively work through my own issues (as well as those of my characters), and do it easily. I took the April challenge and, on the second day of the month, I put off writing all day until all of a sudden I remembered I needed to write but it was too late. It was the next day. I beat myself up a bit, and then moved on. I’ve now had four days in a row and I’m determined to make writing my 750 words a creative habit. And I look forward to writing tomorrow.

As silly as the badges are, I have to thank you for them. They are incentives and it’s good to see them accumulating . . . well, when I see them accumulate.

This is a joy and a wonder. Thanks for creating the site, and for all of you out there writing, thank you for the creative energy and the support to write.

How about a badge for 1,000,000 words? I am getting close :)

I also wondered how many people use the site now. Is there any way that you could include that feature?

Thanks for inspiring me to write daily!!

For this challenge a bounty.

May the words flow freely from mind to page, fellow explorers of the what-may-be. Travel far and wide, adventure freely in the realms of the possible. Yet tarry not too long, lest awed by wondrous improbability you fail to return at all.

Remember, this is not a one way journey we undertake; but rather a trade route between the imagination and reality, the reification of ideas to writing, like the arrival of precious caravan.
