The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I don’t know my fate on this site when there’s payment, but I’ve enjoyed it so far. I hope I can be on here for a longer time than my two years will be, this May 2nd. I love this site!

Suggestion: Replace the word “should” with “want” in your internal dialogue. Example: replace “I should call __ and say Happy Birthday” with “I want to call ___ to say Happy Birthday because I want her to know I care.” We ultimately all do what we are going to do anyway, even if the reason is simply to please others. Using “want” forces us to acknowledge that we DO have choices. It is empowering.

There are a lot of achievement junkies out there. Help us get our fix! Sometimes it’s nice to have something specific to work towards when you don’t exactly know what you want to write about.

Floating Word Count

Instead of the word count being glued to the bottom of the page, let it float near the bottom corner of the screen, regardless where the writer is in their writing. Sometimes I like to go back and edit middle sections, but, because I love watching the word count go up, it’s frustrating for me to not be able to see it and be writing at the same time.

I love the challenges! They helped me to get back into the habit of writing every day and I am so grateful for them and this site!

It’s hard to keep a habit of writing every day. Usually, when you come home late in the evening and feel really tired, it would be so much easier to just lie back and relax a bit. But that’s where 750words ‘kicks in’. Because- hey, you’re on a great streak! You can’t let this one evening ruin the work of another 50, or 20, or maybe just 5 days! So you sit down and write. And write. And write. And suddenly it has become a habit that gets easier with each day and the time flows, just like the words, and- hey, when have you written all of that?!
Well, at least that’s what it feels like to me. And I’m sure there are others out there who feel the same.
Thank you, 750words!

I’m proud of my 35-day streak (even though a few times in January I had copied and pasted stuff to make up the rest of my 750 words because I couldn’t think of anything to write) and I’m looking forward to making it even bigger. Thank you for such a helpful site!

Being an idiot, I missed the 2nd day of February even though I was signed up for the month’s challenge.
Being honest, I’ve donated the $20 I promised if I failed the month.
Being hopeful, I want 750 Words to be around for a long time, by whatever means necessary.

I have become aware of the 826 program recently, and think it’s a wonderful idea. I am very much in favour of donating to the group, and encouraging more young writers!

Pouring back in the pot! February is an easy time to break resolutions (and streaks), but the month is even shorter! Good luck everyone!

The monthly challenge has really been an inspiration for me. I am so proud of myself for completing my first monthly challenge and look forward to my second! Plus I wrote over 52K in January!!!! Woo hoo! Buster, this site rocks! I’m writing every day and I love it!

I am adding to one month challenge bounty because I do hope there is going to be one next month! But we don’t know, because on your tumbrl you didn’t post an update as you promised as to the future of this site. That’s why, please, let me and all the other users know if this site will continue to exist and on what conditions. I also want to thank you for this amazing site. I’ve reached 61-day streak with my first try here, and it’s a feat that I have never imagined I am capable of. Thanks again and I would appreciate info (and many of us would, I imagine!). Let’s sponsor good things, people! Buy your cup of coffee too :)

Metadata is a great feature of this site. I use COMPLAINING: to tag days I am negative. On the final day of the month I pull up my data, look at what I wrote and consider the changes I could make in my attitude. Thanks Buster; great idea.

750 Words has not only allowed me to build a solid daily writing habit, it has also proven to be a breeding ground for great story ideas, and a very affordable psychiatrist. I lurve you, 750 Words!

I agree with having badges specifically for returning writers; it’s a lot harder to get back to an old habit once it’s been broken than it is to get that habit started. Experienced writers need just as much inspiration as beginning ones.

750 words is a place that I look forward to visiting every morning. Buster’s love of statistics and data is something I find inspiring as well and I learn from what I write and what I found out about what I write. Love this site!

Letting my mind flow out on paper every morning has such a refreshing effect on my days! It seems the time I put into this brain-dump rewards me again and again as I get better at deciding what to write about.
