Privacy Policy
750 Words is a place for private writing, so this page tries to say plainly what we collect, why, and who else touches it. It's written to match what the site actually does. If something here is unclear, email [email protected].
750 Words is run by 750 Words, LLC ("we", "us"). The Terms of Service cover the rules for using the site.
Your writing
- You own it. Everything you write here is yours.
- We never sell it.
- The text of your entries is private. Other people can't read it. Your profile page is public: it shows your username, streaks, badges, membership level, local time and similar stats, such as word counts, but nothing drawn from your entries. If you share a day's stats, the share link shows that day's stats and title, plus the charts and metadata you leave switched on (the charts include some words from the entry; metadata are short labelled lines drawn from it). It never shows the full entry, and shows a Silly Robot summary only if you turned that on.
- We never use it to train AI.
AI features (Silly Robot)
AI features come with Fancy membership, including the free trial. You can turn them off at any time with the Silly Robot switch in your account settings.
Starting a Fancy trial switches Silly Robot on. Any writer can switch it on, and AI features use credits. Some courses need Silly Robot, and it may be switched on for you when you take one.
When Silly Robot is on, the parts of your writing a feature needs are sent to an AI provider to produce the result:
- OpenAI: search that understands meaning (your entries, and what you type into search, are sent to build and query the index), entry titles and summaries, and "On Further Reflection" prompts.
- Anthropic: reports, and writing prompts in courses that build on your recent entries.
- Google Gemini: the illustration in a Words As Tree report, drawn from a summary of your writing rather than the entries themselves.
When Silly Robot is off, none of your writing is sent to any of them. Turning it off also deletes the search index built for AI search.
Separately, if you connect your own AI assistant to your archive (a Fancy feature), that assistant can read your entries. You choose that connection. You can revoke the 750 Words connector from your account, and every assistant's access ends if your Fancy membership does.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address, username (handle), password (stored only as a one-way hash), time zone and the preferences you set.
- Your writing and what we work out from it: word counts, streaks, badges, stats, and a search index so you can search your own entries.
- Payments: your membership plan and payment history. Card details go to Stripe, not to us.
- Usage: pages you visit and actions you take on the site, your browser and device type, and your IP address.
- Messages you send us, such as support emails and feedback.
- On the iPhone app: a device token so we can send the notifications you turn on.
How we use it
- to run 750 Words: save your writing, show your stats, keep you signed in;
- to take payments and manage memberships;
- to send the emails you'd expect (receipts, password resets) and the reminders and newsletters you can turn off;
- to answer support requests;
- to understand how the site is used, fix bugs and keep it secure.
Who else handles your information
We use outside services to run the site:
- Heroku and Amazon Web Services: hosting, our database, and file storage (exports, report images, Hall of Phoenixes photos).
- Stripe: payments. Stripe's script loads on our pages.
- PostHog: product analytics and error reports, linked to your account (user id, email and username).
- Amplitude: records of membership and payment events.
- Google: Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics (usage and ad measurement), reCAPTCHA (bot protection; it loads on every page and checks sign-up and log-in), and Google Fonts.
- Meta (Facebook): measuring sign-ups and purchases that come from our ads. This includes your email address (hashed, meaning scrambled), IP address and browser details.
- Hoefler&Co (cloud.typography.com): fonts.
- Scout APM: performance and error monitoring for our servers.
- Mailgun and Postmark: sending email.
- Zendesk: support conversations, including what you write to us and basic account details.
- Circle: our community site, if you join it. Cloudflare sits in front of the community site, and basic request details (IP address, browser, pages visited) go to Profound, a traffic-measurement service.
- Airtable: Hall of Phoenixes interviews, if you fill one in.
- Apple: delivering iPhone app notifications.
- Slack: internal alerts for our team, which can include your username, email address, membership and payment events, and comments you leave when cancelling.
- OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini: AI features (see above). Your writing goes to them only while Silly Robot is on.
We may disclose information if the law requires it.
Cookies and browser storage
We store a sign-in token in your browser to keep you logged in, your display preferences, and copies of the entry you're writing so nothing is lost if your connection drops before it syncs. We also store how you arrived at the site (for example an ad or campaign link). Google, Meta, PostHog, Stripe and reCAPTCHA set their own cookies or browser storage. Closing your account clears what we stored in the browser you close it from.
Your choices
- Export: you can request a download of your writing from your account.
- Delete: you can close your account from your account page. Deleting your account explains exactly what is erased, when, and the few things we can't fully remove.
- Email: you can change your daily reminder in your account preferences, and reminder emails include an unsubscribe link.
- Questions or requests about your data: email [email protected].
How long we keep it
We keep your account and writing while your account is open. When you close it, we follow the schedule on Deleting your account.
Children
750 Words is not for children under 13, or under the minimum age where you live if that's higher. If you think a child has signed up, please email us.
