Deleting your account
You can close your 750 Words account at any time from your account page. This page explains exactly what happens when you do — including the parts that aren't instant, and the parts we can't undo on your behalf.
The short version
- Closing your account signs you out everywhere, straight away.
- We hold everything for 30 days in case you change your mind.
- We email you a link to restore it, and a copy of your writing.
- After 30 days your writing is erased and cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
What gets erased
Everything you wrote, and everything we derived from it:
- Your entries — including drafts, backups and the search index built from them
- Your daily stats, streaks, scores and metadata
- Badges, including any notes or speeches you wrote on them
- Reports and AI summaries, which contain your words verbatim
- Your profile, handle and email address
- Your export files, and your entries from the original 750 Words (v1)
- Your Hall of Phoenixes interview and photo, if you sent one
What we keep, and why
Payment records, for seven years
If you ever paid us, we keep the amount, the currency and the date — with your name, email and address removed. Tax record-keeping requires it. After seven years those rows are deleted too; that isn't a promise we made up for this page, it runs on a schedule.
Stripe, who processed the payment, keeps its own records under its own obligations. We can ask them to delete your customer profile, and we do — but the transaction record itself is theirs, not ours.
A record that you asked to be deleted
We keep a dated note that the request happened and was carried out, with your email address stored only as a one-way hash. It's the evidence we honoured your request, and it's what lets us keep you off mailing lists without keeping your address.
Numbers that aren't about you
Counts — how many people signed up in a month, how many entries were written — survive, because they no longer refer to anyone. Nothing in them can be traced back to you.
Backups
Our database keeps a rolling recovery window of about four days. For up to four days after erasure, a snapshot may still contain your data. We don't read those snapshots, and we never restore a deleted account from one. After that window passes, no copy remains.
Things we can't fully undo
We'd rather say this plainly than imply a clean sweep we can't deliver.
- Email delivery logs. Our email providers keep records of messages sent to you for a limited period. We add you to their suppression lists immediately, but we can't purge the history — it ages out on its own.
- AI features. AI features send the parts of your writing they need to an AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini). None of your writing is sent while Silly Robot is off, and turning it off deletes the search index built for AI search. What was already sent can't be recalled: providers keep API inputs briefly for abuse monitoring and offer no way to delete an individual person's. We never use your writing to train AI. The Privacy Policy has the details.
- Support conversations. If you wrote to support, your messages and your contact details stay in our helpdesk (Zendesk) after your account is deleted. Ask us and we'll remove them.
- Other devices. We clear the browser you close your account from. If you were signed in elsewhere, or on the iOS app, that copy clears when it next talks to us.
If you can't sign in
Email [email protected] from the address on your account and we'll take care of it. We'll send a confirmation link to that address first — not because we doubt you, but because anyone can type an email address, and we'd rather not delete the wrong person's writing.
We aim to acknowledge within three days and finish within 30, which is what GDPR requires of us.
If you change your mind
Use the link in the email we send when you close your account. It works until the deletion date and can only be used once. After that date there is genuinely nothing left to restore — not in a backup, not in an archive. That's the point.
