The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I have been enjoying writing here ever since the end of June and have accomplished much with it. My favoritest feature yet? Scheduling a vacation. It came in handy just in time for New Year’s. :-D

I joined on a kind of whim on the last day of NaNoWriMo 2011. I had planned on starting Julia Cameron’s THE ARTIST’S WAY on January first, but when I found 750 Words, I thought, why don’t I start the Morning Pages now. I also wanted to continue the writing momentum that NaNo had created. I am so glad that I have joined! I am finding my excitement for writing once again. I am working through emotions that I didn’t know were there. I am reclaiming my creativity. The cute bird badges are a nice little bonus too. In a month’s time, I accumulated eleven badges. My prized ones are the Awesome! horse I received on the 1st of January (and how I got my notes! But I will be donating too) and the flock of 100k birds I got on December 19th. Just 20 days in and I had gotten 100k. I’ve never written so many words in so short of a time before. Never have written 100k in a month, for that matter. So thank you for the site, Buster. Thank you for helping us challenge ourselves.

My dad, a prostate cancer survivor, is now beginning what will likely be the biggest fight of his life with what looks like liver cancer. 750Words will be the place where I will barf out my insides as I try to make sense of it what I can, and peace with what I can’t.

I love the badges! They by far are what motivate me most, and I would love to see many more types of badges to keep me writing every day.

This site has transformed my writing practice. For years I have “wanted” to write every day. But clearly didn’t want it enough to actually do it. I’m not sure how it’s happening but I can’t imagine missing day. Seeing the unbroken line of x’s across the top of the page is exhilarating. And I’ll admit to just gazing lovingly at my collection badges. Perhaps there is also the comfort of strangers, collectively putting our thoughts and ideas on paper (of sorts). I’m so glad to be here. Thanks for creating this delightful place.

This site has led to so much for me. I’ve started writing daily, which helps me with my typing speed, idea generation and just generally thinking life through. I would bargain that my vocabulary is improving too. As a result of 750 words, I went and tackled NaNoWriMo in November, and have written my first novel! I’ve tried to keep daily journals before, but have never been this successful. I’m on a 79 day streak!
750 words has inspired me to challenge myself more. I have seen what I can do, when put to the test, so I’ve started my own daily creativity blog that I will maintain along with my daily word here.
I thank Buster for creating and maintaining this site. It’s been a great addition to my life.

I’ve always beat myself up for not being a disciplined person. 750words is helping me learn that discipline is a skill that I really can learn when it means enough to me. I have just now completed my 97th day of writing. I actually accepted and achieved the December challenge. If writing 20 minutes a day helps my mental health, can I start developing other disciplines by committing to 20 minutes a day? I absolutely know now that I can. Happy New Year and thank you Buster.

Writing 750 words every day since I found this site in late November has been life changing. I actually know myself better because I leave a written record that I can review at any time. So, for 2012, I’m setting a MASSIVE GOAL for myself. I plan to write at least 1,500 words every day for a grand total of 547,500 words by the end of 2012. If I go over just some every day, then I’ll make 550,000 words.

I have said something like this before, but I do need to reiterate that I never expected 750 to be so transformative for me. I love to write but have often lacked the discipline to do so consistently. This site is helping me stay focused and productive. Many thanks for all the amazing support. May 2012 be the year in which we celebrate both the transforming power and sheer pleasure of the written word.

It seems to me that when I get a badge for writing for a month, it doesn’t seem like much of a deal because since I got one before, a new one doesn’t get added. I would like a badge for each month I achieve my monthly writing goal please! Hooray!

750 words help me to learn to observe more daily aspect of life and put all my thoughts into paper. Gave me the enthousiasm to write no matter what mood I am on. Very good writing progress along the way.

I thank you Buster for this site. It has given me the motivation that I need to do writing and I had promised myself, if I complete the month of Decembers challenge, that I will polish my writing skills. Well, I am happy to say, that I will be doing just that this year. Again, thanks Buster.

Even on those days where you don’t think you have anything to say or write, do it anyways. There is always something to be worked out inside your brilliant mind. Write as much as you feel like but get in that initial 750 words. Somedays you may only have 750, some days you may have 1600. Just keep writing!

For the first several months, writing every day on this site was an experiment to see if I could write a consistent journal. Then, it became an all-consuming addiction to type out my thoughts and brainstorms at all hours until I obtained all of the badges. And now? With Space Bird being the only badge left to earn, typing out a thousand or so words daily is now a deeply-ingrained habit, for better or for worse. Sometimes typing so much to myself seems more self indulgent than it is helpful, but the site is here for when I need it for hardcore thought-dumping.

I will say this, though: I do like having a place I can make goals (and New Years resolutions!) where no one will else will see or judge them. Since some studies suggest that telling goals to others actually reduces the motivation to follow through on them, 750words is a great tool for holding oneself consistently accountable for their goals in private.

On another note, I get tired of hearing people whine about their broken streaks: if you missed writing for a day due to negligence (and not something uncontrollable like a network blackout), you need to pick yourself off the ground and be just that more motivated to restart it. The 387-day streak I’m currently on is not my first, and I don’t think I could have been nearly as dedicated to rebuilding it without the embarrassment I endured from forgetting to write for a day (and sulking for the next) a little more than a year ago.

I have been using 750 words regularly for about 3 and a half months. I missed one day in all that time and have completed 3 monthly challenges. Sitting down and getting my words out helps me connect to my subconscious and get to my deeper feelings and thoughts, so thank you for that. Looking forward to a great 2012 with you all!
