The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Streak freeze

750words is wonderful, user-friendly and helpful with psychology/spiritual/creativity and many other things. A little suggestion for motivational purpose: would it be possible to earn a streak freeze for a day, if you miss for unavoidable reasons? I mention this as Duolingo has this feature and it is helpful. You cannot earn and use more than one day at a time.

More badges for accomplishments

I really appreciate this site. Early on it can be hard to start a habit so maybe more early on behavior badges and badges for more diverse habits. So you get even rewarded more in the beginning which makes it easier to establish brain patterns.

Celebrating a couple of things tonight: One, the amazing fact that I just passed two million words here. Never dreamt that that would happen when I started on 750 Words 1302 days ago. I’m so grateful for the daily writing habit this site enabled me to develop. The second thing I’m celebrating is the arrival of Louie Phoenix. Congratulations Kellianne and Buster. Your kids are lucky to have such conscious parents. Peace and blessings to the whole family.

After less than 2 weeks, I can already see a difference in my writing and feel a difference in my motivation to write. 750 Words helped me leave behind excuses. The option to write anything eased the pressure to perform while I practiced writing skills. The stats build my confidence and confirm that it is possible for me to write enough words to fill a book. I am using 750 Words as a journal tool right now and soon will be shifting gears to use this resource to write my book, “Beyond Diagnosis”

I’ve written 45 days in a row!

I’ve never done that before and it’s lead to so much clarity.

I’ve been using this material to help me remember dreams, write blog posts, add content to digital products and make videos I share to grow a following on social media.

Also, this has helped me stick to a routine which I can quickly give up easily and often do.

This has changed my life, I have a lot more fun writing now!

Awesome site, worth the tiny $5 investment per month!

Privacy assurance

It is not so much a feature request – more of a question.

In this day and age everything gets hacked and compromised. How is 750words set up to withstand cyber attacks?

For members or patrons (or however it would work, the idea is a paid feature) to have an optional word count set. If they participate in an official Nanowrimo and sign up (like the monthly challenge) or set their own Camp Nano type challenge: write 35k in 30 days or something. So their word count would still tick off at 750 but set the real goal to whatever their daily average is (and the editor would not alert the writer until the “real” word count has passed).

I’ve been a member since 2010 (back when dinosaurs roamed…). I tended to go on and off from this site on the regular and sometimes went up to five or six months without writing. But for the past several months I have returned as a regular writer and decided to become a Patron. It’s the least I could do as I patiently received emails nudges every day without fail. This place gave me a great avenue to vent, process, and just pour out streams of consciousness and thoughts that made sense to no one but myself, with objective feedback on them too. It’s not nearly as satisfying to just dump them into a locked block or word processor. The format is so inviting. On and off I tried to work on Nanowrimo or personal writing projects here and it didn’t quite work, I was just too addicted to my 10-minute entries. Yet recently I did in fact start using this to break through some writers’ block for my novel. Lo and behold, I can write a full chapter in just a few days rather than weeks or months. I don’t know if it was just the adult maturity that comes with living Life on Life’s terms or the sense of duty and pride I feel in being a Patron, but after six years this is finally falling into place, and I’m well on my way to breaking my previous (small but still mighty) streak of 39 days. Wednesday will mark the first 30-day streak I’ve had since 2011! The streaks are not as important to me as the word count, but there is something satisfying about seeing your work and life come together in such a cool, interactive way that doesn’t offer too much or too little. Here’s to another six+ years!

I am learning it isn’t about the streak but the habit of writing that is important. It’s progress not perfection. I had a baby a couple of months ago and like a lot of new moms went through some depression and anxiety. Journaling has been my “me time”, my resting place, my place to sort through rational and irrational thoughts. It’s my place to connect to God through conversation. It’s my safe place. As I sort through old stuff in my closet I am forever grateful that the many words I have written on this site take up no room in my home whatsoever.

A better mobile site

I hadn’t thought of using 750words on mobile, because of the word count and the difficulty of typing with my thumbs. But I often do write much better by walking and talking into my phone! I vote for a better mobile site.

ONE YEAR. I’ve written every day for one year. And I don’t plan on stopping. My goal of 300k this year has now seemed to have lowered into a first-step goal. I am so giddy and proud and thankful for this website. Everytime I felt like giving up I realized I didn’t want to break the streak and now I’m a pegasus!

Set our own word count goals

This goes along with the “improve writing page” suggestion, but I would love to be able to set my own word count goals for each day on the site, ESPECIALLY during NaNoWriMo. It would be nice to either have a separate page or an option to set your own daily word-count goals with a minimum goal of 750 per day.

This app has inspired me to get back into writing. I am a writer who doesn’t write nearly as much as I would like to. It has also provided an opportunity for deeper bonds with my friends. I told them all about it and each day we share and discuss our stats. In turn, this brings us closer. It’s how we check on each other. We also support each others writing endeavors through this app. Thanks everyone!

I haven’t written since July 2015. I am so glad to be back. I’ve been through a few things (the deaths of my mother and uncle), and I’ve learned so much. Now it’s time to write again. Thank you, 750words for still being here! And thank you to everybody who writes here and helps to keep me inspired!

Having a daily space that is also tied to a daily goal (writing at least 750 words, duhhh) helps me create stability when life otherwise seems chaotic. This is a place of peace and forward momentum. Thanks for creating it :)

A rose by any other color. . .

Each successful day, we receive a brilliant rose letting us know we did a good job. I look forward to those letters! Perhaps, as a sign of further accomplishment, perhaps the rose color can change throughout the month? Red 1st week, Purple 2nd, multi-hued week 3, and bedazzled week 4?

750 Words has been a Godsend. It has given me a space to keep my thoughts and musings, to unload, to be free. And, since I write at least 750 words a day for breakfast, I am not intimidated by my other daily writing goals.
