The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Set Custom Word Goals

I think it would be cool if we could set our word goals for a number besides 750 words. I know that 750 is somehow magic, but what if I wanted to set a goal at, say, 1000 words a day? I’d like to be able to do that.

I’ve been having trouble with my blog lately because I feel stuck so I thought I’d give this a try to give me more practice. So far, it’s been a great routine that I do and I’m thankful there is a community that is doing it as well.

The meta data hooked me. It helps me immediately reflect on my mood while writing, and I wouldn’t normally pay attention to that. I’ve found some insight into myself, mostly to dig into the anger and find out what’s really bothering me.

Recently I came up with the gem that my father gets his sense of belonging and love from extended family, and I don’t. And that’s a much more gown up way to express my feelings when refusing to participate in activities with people I won’t ever have anything to do with after my father passes away.

I’ve found the emotional dump helpful in keeping my worrying less bothersome, my aggravations more defensible, and put those feelings of my inner child into grown up terms.

Sometimes it helps me work out all my thoughts and shake out a better path to take. I was trying to figure out when or if I could/should ever resume my educational goals (I’m 49), and after I dumped all the ifs, whens, and buts, I came up with a totally agreeable and doable path to remove my only regret in life, which would also result in a much higher paid position more than 5 years before retirement resulting in a very pretty pension. See?! And I never have to spin it around in my head again because it’s already worked out!

My therapist is responsible for setting me on the path to find a journalling outlet, and I’m so glad I stumbled upon, the meta data alone is valuable to me, but it’s proven to be so much more enlightening than I imagined my own thoughts and torments could ever be.

What Type Of Writing Day

I really like using 750 words. I am excited to go back and find nuggets in my writing. Is there something we could put on there that would help us weed out the days of inspiration and the days of slogging through. I was thinking of a three button system: A.Yes, this was a NOVEL Day B.Not Likely a NOVEL day C. This day writing was terrible but I got through. I am sure I am too wordy, but it would help me a lot.

Update to Time Off

I absolutely love that I can schedule time off and maintain my streak. However, I tend to feel guilty that it ADDS days to my streak. I would love it if there were a way to schedule the time off, and you wouldn’t lose your streak, but it would not add days either.

So, say I’m at 150 days, and I go away for three days, it would pick up at 151 on the fourth day, rather than 154.

Without my daily brain dump I am not able to operate at 110% – it is the best practice I have going for me and I see results immediately.

Well it has been two years of trying to make it through a month without missing a day. I have finally done it! 48 straight days of writing. I believed that would give me a free month but instead I was forced to restart my membership. Disappointing…

Stackable badges

Getting behavior badges like the hamster is fun. It would be great if we could get these each time the accomplishment is made, instead of just the first time. For example, after getting the cheetah, the counter could reset, making the user eligible for the accomplishment after another ten days of writing fast. The badges could just have a counter for how many times they were earned, rather than having a huge wall of badges on the stats page.

I can’t think of what metrics to judge (sorry) but maybe repeat badges and animal classes for behavior? As it is right now the only badges I have left are the Nano and the long streak ones, but I’m not sure if the daily streak ones are going to happen for me (I miss about 1 day every 2-3 weeks right now). Besides Patron, is there an early adopter one perhaps? Sorry this is not very helpful.

Dear 750 words, I am very grateful for your existence. Your existence helped me create a searchable data-dump from all my too-complicated days.

Unlike the many creative writers who use 750 words, I use it mainly to record things I want to preserve. Sometimes these are touching and lovable family moments. More often, but also valuable, I preserve emails and Twitter retweets and mail orders from Amazon, all mixed together.

At the end of each month, I download the month’s text and upload it to Evernote. This way, all the months (and now years!) of writing with you is completely searchable.

Warm best wishes to all my fellow-addicts of 750 words, no matter what way you are finding to use it.

By-the-day Labeling system

I use 750 for a few different things including writing fiction, a personal diary and writing lists. It would be nice to keep track of how I use the days later on, like a way to make the ‘X’ at the top of the page a different color so I can find it later.

May 2016 was my first challenge success. Looking back over 31 days of writing, most were mundane ramblings (although I always make my to-do list for the day), but five or six days produced surprisingly deep and insightful prose. Without committing to daily writing, these would never have happened.

These special days are the reason to write every day— you never know when they will happen.

I so look forward to writing everyday now and the badges are a fun incentive to keep going. I’m going for my first try at getting on the Wall of Awesomeness this month! Writing gives me a good perspective on life and helps me get out of my head and shed the monkey mind on “paper.”

More day goals! I’m hoping to pass 1k, 2k, and keep going. Or even just like 1 yr, 2 yrs, 3yrs, etcetera. Keep it fresh!

This is my 10th straight month of going for all thirty days and I’ve won the last 9. I’m so excited that I am in a place where writing isn’t like pulling teeth for me anymore. I’m at more than a hundred fifty thousand words for the year, and I’ve even upped my person goal to 1000 a day. This is awesome.

I’ve had two months in a row of writing daily—except that one pesky day. It’s been wonderful to have the habit of writing and to process my days through writing. Thank you, 750words!

The Turtle Badge

We have a badge called The Cheetah, for folks who can write their 750 words in less than 20 minutes. How about a badge called The Turtle for folks who take a bit longer to get their words out? There’s nothing wrong with being particular about what you write, so I think that should be rewarded also. :)

I recently took two months off writing due to time constraint. I didn’t realize how vital writing had become to analyzing my life, finding patterns and my fiction practice. Thank you so much! <3
