The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Getting close to my 30 day streak! Grateful for 750 words as I begin my week. It helps me find a semblance of clarity in my thoughts and process my worries & hopes for the time ahead. Thanks again for a great site!

I love how this has been working for me. i have been able to write alot more and start to organize lessons from my writing. i love how it breaks down emotions of your writing and the tracker helps push to the minimum 750 words

I just got my 100 day streak!! Augh!!! And on Mother’s Day! Ok, so for me, this is a showing that I can be consistent and I can hold to the goals I set for myself. Seems pretty simple – just write 750 words a day. They don’t even have to make sense! Often times, they are just musing from my day, other times they are a short story and sometimes they actually have some substance and meaning behind them. I love 750 words! My husband is still shocked that I am still using it!!

I started writing as part of a challenge in another group I was in. We were supposed to write each day for a week. I like typing more than writing so this seemed a good choice. Once I started, I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I never kept a diary, never wrote in a journal but somehow this is such a wonderful outlet. I write about my day, how I feel – perhaps a short story. Whatever I want. I encourage you to try it – try it for a week, a month if you’re daring. It might change everything.

Just popping in to express gratitude for this app/venue. I return to it after a long time away, but it’s such a familiar/friendly interface that getting back into the groove always seems possible. Hope everybody’s okay out there in this pandemic and that writing practice is providing some kind of goodness in your lives.

This is an amazing site – a habit is now built to write every day, and every day I am writing more than I ever had, so thank you to these amazing creators!

I am. new to writing and found 750 Words on a reference from Margaret Atwood’s Masterclass. Keeping a streak going is a challenge, and you have fun. I have been using 750 Words to experiment with story types and styles. Trying to see if I can write something like I have seen in novels ( breaking the fourth wall, comedy, etc.)
It’s nice for practice and sometimes I write something I like!!

Percentage of Days Idea / Request

Hello,

First off, thanks for a great site. I’ve written more in the last 6 months then I had for years before joining… it’s been great.

One thing I’ve noticed is that because I went through a slump with travel and visitors that my percentage of total days (I missed about 50 days, I know, it’s alot), which puts my days that I wrote at 71% of the total days I’ve been a member.

This feature request isn’t about the writing streaks per month, but total number of days written. I would love to see a weighted version of that (along side the real one). Or perhaps mercy days of some sort. Where basically the word count over 750 (or some other number) gets figured into an equivalent ‘mercy’ day that can be added back in. So, if I wrote 1500 words one day, I could add another day back into my total ‘days’ of writing. For me, getting back to 100% is basically impossible. It’s around 30 years from now where those 50 days would be negligible enough to round up to 100% of my days… so it’s nearly unachievable yet it sits on my profile as a reminder of something that can’t be achieved. Anyway, just looking for a way to reclaim those missed days of writing. And it would give some extra purpose to the days I go way over the 750 words! :)

Thanks again for everything!

Another vote for an iPhone app! There are many apps to refer to: Google Docs, Apple Notes, Bear, Simple Note, etc. I know it won’t be easy, and I appreciate all your efforts toward this goal! Thank you for this great site!

Backtrack tagging

I would like there to be a way to add tags to older posts. I really enjoy using metadata to track my work and it would be great to be able to go back and tweak things a little.
I do also realize there is value in not being able to alter the historical record of writing, so I don’t know how you could preserve both values. Just a thought. Thanks for a great site!

Mercy Days

I’ve several times been doing a month challenge and then you just get One Of Those Days. One month in particular I was 25 days in, then a work disaster which took all my time and effort. To be then greeted with the “Oh, it looks like you’re out of the running” and knowing that you’re now on the Wall of Shame feels really inappropriate. At that point how about being able to cash in a Mercy Day. Preserves your ‘streak’, and allows you to recover. Otherwise (am I the only one?) I find it just puts a stop to my writing for ages. So that’s my suggestion – Mercy Days. Could be everyone gets one a month. Or you could BUY them? But it’s a little like sick days at work. Rich people could abuse this, but who wins?

Font Choice

I hate to critique anything about this site, because it has been a great source of inspiration and motivation to me already, but if I could change one thing it would be an option to see a different font than Sniglet throughout the site or the header on the daily page. I admit that I am a bit of a type snob, but I’m aware of that bias. Given how minimal and focused this site is I really think that one small change would only amplify this entire experience to another level. Regardless of whether this rises to a level of need to ever change I am still a fan. Thanks for all that you have done with this site.

Monthly Feature

It would be cool to have words from a Great Griffin or someone who has had great success with their writing practice to have a platform to inspire and motivate more people as well as start a platform for their own writing. This feature could be collaboration with other writers out in the world, books, publishers or even software like Scrivener to help all writers in their writers journey.

In today’s world of having a mobile computer in your hand nearly every moment, just like having a camera always in hand, can change the world’s access to their better selves. The better the experience along with the lower the resistance, you could enlist more people to the cause.

Visual Chain

I think it would be cool to be able to see the full unbroken chain of consecutive days. So a page view of boxes and how many of them have x’s in them. It would be a cool reinforcement to see 10, 30, 300 days in a row as a reminder of your progress/success

For years I wanted to get into a habit of writing. There are so many testimonials to the benefits. I’ve read books on books on forming good habits and could never quite get the writing one to stick. Scheduling, carving out time… you name it; I couldn’t get it to work for me. This site though might have finally tipped the scales for me. This is the ritual of Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages, added to Jerry Seinfeld’s mental stimulus (Don’t Break the Chain). But you don’t stop there. You add in a gamified reward system and top it off with an accountability mechanism and BOOM! Success. If that can’t help you then it’s time to step up to more draconian measures. Thank you 750 words, you’ve helped me establish a habit.

I have long-standing depression. Writing every day helped me to track the things that bother me. To my delight, it also kickstarted a creative writing habit, which has yielded a number of short stories, one of which has been published.

Save button on bottom of page

:) I often finish writing past 750 words, but if I close the tab it says I have unsaved edits. I have to scroll up, click ‘Today’ so that it will save, then close the tab. Can you add a simple Save button to the bottom of the page so that I can just click that instead then exit? I lost some words and a streak once because I finished writing 750 words, but it didn’t save all of them, and the last save was below 750 words.
