The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I signed up for the monthly challenge; I did not succeed in writing everyday… But, I did write much more this month than I have previously so it was a big boost to my productivity. Thanks 750 words! This dissertation is going to get written some day.

Someone’s already recently mentioned this, but I’ve thought about it before and think it’s a great idea. There should be more added (maybe different levels?) to the existing behavior badges. Like having a second hamster badge, or a level up on the hamster badge if you go on a longer streak writing your words under 20 mins. Maybe 20 day streaks? Or a month? Something worth the cooler badge.

Keep it simple - Added value on badges

Ok. I know everyone always asks for more badges, but I’m going to keep it even simpler. I would love to see even the ability to re-earn the same badges again. So sort of stackable. The early riser badge really pushed me to do my words in the morning, but I’ve found since I’ve earned the badge once, I stop being able to track how many days in a row I’ve managed it from then on. Would be great to have this as a feature. So it becomes a way to quickly summarise key trends in your writing over the long term.

I believe I can use this tool to keep me accountable while I prepare for a possible job as a writer/blogger in my future, while winding down my current job. Thanks!

Would love to see more badges! How about 1,000 days in a row and 1 million words written? I would also love to see one for those who get through multiple monthly challenges. A different horse for each month maybe? Maybe a Silver horse if you do 3 months in a row, gold for 6 months and diamond for a full year of winning the monthly challenge. The badges make this site and are just so much fun!

markdown formatting & more badges

I love this site… i created a daily habit of writing thanks to the badges! I want more badges!

What would be also nice is the ability to use markdown in the writing area.

I was on such a roll… 60 days… and then, somehow, I missed a day – back to being an Egg. The great news is that I didn’t simply quit and give up as I’ve done in the past. After my last longest streak (17 days), it took me about 3 years to get back to writing daily… this time it only too 24 hours.

I am so happy that I broke my 110 day streak and failed the March challenge!! What madness?! Not really, for two reasons. First, this morning after a little over a week I just got back to it and even before that I knew I would so did not fuss too much about the missed days. So that is a major advance for me. Second, my March challenge contract specified that if I missed one or more days I would donate $18 to 750word and I did that this morning. Yay. I consider this a win win. Because I do love this site and I recommend it to everyone and am happy to make a donation to support 750words.

It’s difficult getting back to writing after a lapse. Having badges for total words or total days of writing, as opposed to predominately badges for streaks, would help lapsed writers get back to the keyboard. Then the thought of building up to another streak wouldn’t be so daunting as to make one think why bother. Instead, you could continue working toward a 25,000 or 100,000 word badge, or 100 total days of writing.

I really dig the site! I have questions about the analysis, though. I think the labeling of some of my content as “religious” is false, as I am an atheist. I therefore think that your algo analysis makes big assumptions about what it’s tagging as spiritual. If I were to ask for further philosophical development, it would be to expand the analysis of whatever it is that triggers the “religious” tagging.

I also offer my services for this analysis should need be. I was previously senior analyst at Silverchair Information Systems, which deals heavily in semantic tagging and analysis. I was in the support and enhancement side, so I am not intricately knowledgeable with the hard coding of autotagging and the like, but transformation analysis and the like I am better with.

Great product, and thank you!

I’ve used this site on-and-off since I was 14 in 2011. I have to say, now turning 18, how much it has helped me become articulate, improving both my writing and commitment skills throughout the years.
These cups are just the tip of the iceburg for the amount I owe from failed monthly challenges. But I know I’ll achieve one next month!

Track monthly improvement over time (you beat last months total of days writing by 3 more days sort of thing).

Allow you to set goals (I will write 10 days out of 31 days of the month)

I just accidentally broke my writing streak after 198 days, so close to 200. And yet I wasn’t even all that upset. Thanks to 750 Words (and a writing project I’m invested in), I’ve moved beyond needing numbers as a motivation. The habit of writing every day has been formed! (Which isn’t to say that I still don’t like trying for the badges, but…) This site rocks and has helped me improve as a writer so much!
