The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I love this page…it keeps me writing every day. I believe in it. I support it. Any month that you don’t finish all the days, start again anyway. The only failure is the failure to begin again.

Love~

An iPhone/iPad app

It’s particularly tough to write on the fly on my iPhone using the web browser, when I have to do that. I would love to have an app that made that process a little more fluid.

But that being said, I also just wanted to say how grateful I am for this site and everything it gives us — it’s such a wonderful, valuable tool! Thank you for all the work you do to keep it up!

I’m going badgeless! Well, not really. I like seeing the badges I’ve earned. And for quite a bit of time, I’ve wondered why there aren’t more. They’ve really helped motivate me. But now I’m making a turn. Especially after freaking out about missing a day or stressing about keeping a streak. For me, 750 Words is a place to write my Morning Pages. And it works best for me to write them, well, in the mornings. I lost sight of that by focusing on badges. So if I miss a day, it’s because something happened to alter my morning. At least, at this point that’s pretty much the case. And I’m grafeful for the badges because they helped me get here, to a morning routine that I can, more times than not, count on. Thank you, badges! Smooches and love you much. I’ll take it from here.

Having been here nearly a year, I feel it’s time to reflect on things.

I didn’t know what I was going to do with this space at first, to be honest. I maintain a daily Livejournal still, and I try to blog in my mental health blog once a week at minimum. But I have found that this space has done me a solid — it’s been a great place for me to get out raw thought, and then pick over it. Sometimes, I use it to store fragments of thought from elsewhere, but for the most part — it’s been a great straight connection from hands-to-brain, an excellent self-therapy tool. So I felt it mete to pass around the coffee cup and say that. :D

750words is an excellent place to vent and idly ramble, to write letters to my lovers, and to sort out what my subconscious wants me to do without too much stress.

total site word count

As 750words.com deals with a lot of stats I wonder how hard it would be to implement a little widget that shows an updating total of all the words written by users since this site started. Kind of pointless but maybe interesting, especially if it updated every couple of minutes.

Lots of help in sorting out the issues I am working on, both in recovery and in therapy. I find that, while slow to start, it is actually hard to stop!

I love the site…. BUT why stop at 500 days? I’ve asked this and many others have asked it before, too. I’m at 1000 days and I’m still a spacebird!

Every year I experience a holiday slump that starts around November and continues through the new year, sometimes into March.

This year wasn’t any different, but I feel that this site helped me get back in the saddle earlier and with more confidence. Haven’t managed to build up my streak again, but I’m getting better every day.

750 words has been the fortress, the refuge of my soul. If you have a writer’s heart and head and need somewhere to let it all out, 750 words is the place. I like the privacy. I like that I am writing only for myself. I like that it is daily. I like that it is motivating to see the pretty green Xs at the top of the page when I complete a day. I like that I can write as much or even as little as I like (if I am not concerned with breaking my streak). I like that I can sign up for a challenge to write 750 words or more for an entire month, and I like the fact that I have won every challenge I signed up for. 750 words is where I form my thoughts and ideas about the world and about who I am and where I want to go with my life, and it’s also where I just simply record the day-to-day happenings and precious memories.
In it’s essence, what stands out to me most about 750 words, and what speaks most clearly to my heart is its simplicity. Simplicity is the key.
I love 750 words, and I love everything that it has done in my life. I love the writer that I am becoming. I love Buster. Thank you Buster for creating this wonderful place of online journaling. It’s simple, it’s motivating, it’s spontaneous, it’s private, it’s daily. 750 words is the best. <3

I use 750 words to give myself the challenge of sticking to a goal and to build discipline. If I can manage this everyday, I can manage other things I also need to do. And it is working! I’m doing well here, and doing much better in other areas of my life. It also helps me explore my thoughts and creativity. I highly recommend using 750words.

Four days ago I passed 100,000 words! I would never have guessed I could spend that many words in a years. True, much of it was unedited gibberish, but I DID IT! The equivalent of two novels. Step up to the bar, dear reader. If I can do it so can you. I dare you. I’ll even share a trick I used to skirt past a personal block. I had a psychological thing that made it hard to ACCUMULATE a pile of 750 words. So I reversed the image in my mind. My daily goal is to SPEND 750! It worked for me, Turned down the pressure.

Today I woke up to realize I’ve broken my first time ever 28 day streak of writing. I felt awful, and then I realized I JUST WROTE, LIKE, 750+ WORDS 28 DAYS IN A ROW. So I would just like to say, if you break a writing streak don’t kick yourself too hard. Think of all the writing you have done, and keep writing. And also try to set at least 50 reminder alarms on your phone because I’m pretty sure that’s the magic number of times to be reminded to not forget to write today. :D

I haven’t been this prolific since I was 17 when ideas and inspiration oozed from my pores. I haven’t written very much in close to a decade and recently helped form an intimate writing group and 750 Words was recommended to me; I’m on a 40 day streak and can’t recommend this site enough.

Want that Cheetah badge? I highly recommend Weird Al’s polka medleys. I cant help but churn out material :)

I would love to see more badges in general, particularly for mid-level accomplishments. Wanting to earn the cheetah and the hamster and the flamingo got me to commit to a ten-day writing streak, and I’m currently working towards an Early Rooster (having already earned my Night Bat). It’s a fun way to create incentives to write daily — people love to collect! — and I know it has definitely helped me write regularly. Forty-six day streak!
