The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Thanks for making this site Buster! I just passed the one million word mark, I would never have guessed I could write that much when I started, but it has been 4 years now and the day doesn’t feel like it started until the 750 words are done. In a good way!

A few months ago, I wrote that my mom was very sick. She died of bladder cancer on Feb. 12. She knew I used this site and when I had my best streak going, over a hundred days, she was the one who saved it for me one night. It was a little after 11 p.m. and she was going to bed. She said, “did you write your words?” I had totally forgotten. We had been having a nice evening, watching some TV and laughing at this and that. That was last November and she was still doing all right, as far as being mobile, able to engage, etc. But my streak broke last December 18, when she got very sick again, was admitted to the hospital, and I had to leave work and travel a couple of hours to be with her. The most I’ve been able to keep going since then is about 30 days and that’s with taking scheduled days off. I always think of that night when she saved my streak. She knew it was important to me. Maybe one day I’ll get 100 days again. Note of inspiration: I don’t know. I was just thinking of how I’m now on the wall of shame because I failed the April challenge. But here I am, back, and writing. Mom would want me to do that.

I am 18 and married, with a 18 month old child… My life has been pretty tough these past few years, and money is tight… However 750 words has helped me more than anyone could possibly fathom, it has given me a place to get all of the mess going on in my life out of my head. After a few days I could already feel the tension and stress leaving me. I have used this website as a place where I can complain and rant about everything in my life I hate, so that when I click that “Save and Submit” button, it all seems to disappear, and everything I was angry about just vanished. Although I have only been using 750 words for a month, I have already seen massive benefits from it, far more than I ever expected….
Thank You,
Bailey Lentz

I’m on day 503 now. I’ve been so determined to keep it going. I never thought I could do it but this site has given me hope.
Last night the internet was out at my house. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get it to connect and struggled with it for hours. I really needed to go to bed and get some sleep because I had to get up early for work. And the day was fast ticking down. I could keep struggling with my internet, or find another place to connect, which is what I did. I threw my laptop into my backpack and ran to my work place which has free wifi and stood outside of the closed building to complete my words. No, I literally ran. I’m not in the best of space, but I was completely determined (and probably thought to be crazy by my roommate). Glad there wasn’t too many people out cause I bet I might have looked strange being on my laptop in the employee parking lot. xD Even though I ended up getting only a couple hours of sleep, I still feel energetic and awake. I’m so glad that I didn’t break my streak. May all this determination leak to other aspects of my life.

I just reached Spacebird status, which feels like a huge feat. At least 750 words written every day for 500 days straight. I feel proud of myself for being able to maintain such a productive habit and hope I can keep up the streak for much longer still!

I have been using this site since October of 2011 to help me clear my mind, organize my thoughts, and work through the though stuff life throws at me, and it has been invaluable. To know that there is a safe, secure, and distraction-free place I can come to write has been a great source of comfort for me over the years, and I know it will continue to be. Thanks, Buster, for creating this place.

Today I just got my space bird. That’s 500 days. I wasn’t sure I was gonna make it, but I did, and it makes me feel like I can make more goals in life and eventually meet them. Just gotta take it one day at a time.

Writing every day—896 days since I joined, 887 daily pages written, 864-day streak now—this site is part of the core of my day and my writing. But—the ability to schedule time off suddenly disappeared. I could lose it all by one slip….yes, I love the site and the writing, but the structure of my streak keeps me on track. Please let me schedule time off again!!!

Improve the writing page

Improve text formatting. Maintain paragraph breaks even when I only hit enter once between paragraphs.

When I return to dialogue/bulleted lists/whatever, it’s all in one long paragraph.

The site appears to be vulnerable. Is this fixed? I would like some updated information abut this and I’m sure others are worried about security too. I have already changed my password but I guess that’s no use until the site is secure again, so please let us know! Thanks.

Eternity to Oblivion

As it seems that the Eternity feature is a hassle and a half I’d be fine if it was removed. Just throwing that in so you can work on more things instead of spinning the wheels on something that is at best, a novelty.

Flexi-goals.

I can’t write every day, but I want to write most days. So I want to set a flexi-goal that 85% of the days each month, I write. If I meet this goal, I get a cookie. If I meet it repeatedly, I get fancier cookies. What happened to me once was that i wrote for 30 days, got my badge, missed one day, and did not come back for months and months. For me it’s too all-or-nothing. But I could work at an 85% goal for a long, long time. If I slipped below, I could work harder to bring it up. There is recovery built in as an option. I could start at 60% and set harder goals as i progress with writing. There, has my suggestion reached 750 yet? No, but I’ll stop here. Thanks for listening.

It never gets any easier. If you’ve been tempted to quit, and people tell you “It gets easier”, they lied. It only seems that way because you get better at it. The level of difficulty is still the same; it may even get higher; but by persevering through the dark times and despair, you level up to a point where you can handle it. After 5th grade comes 6th grade, which is harder. After your baby is a crying, diapering mess, he’s a toddler running all over the place, which is harder. But you’ve gained strength from the journey, and you can keep on.
This is one thing 750 words has done for me: it motivated me to persevere. After struggling through February, I completed the March challenge and began Camp NaNoWriMo in April. The ideas are flowing like a prairie wind, fast and strong. It’s not that it’s easy; it’s that because I practiced long and hard, I can do it now.
Keep on keeping on.

Improve the Today page

i would love to see the ‘how you’re feeling’ graph be tweaked to be more accurate. at least for me, it tells me every single day that i’m mostly feeling ‘affectionate’, even when i’ve spewed hate all over the bleeding page. so basically i just discount that and look at the others, but i’d love either to know what i’m saying that makes it think i’m feeling all warm and fuzzy, or to have the algorithm tweaked to better reflect the sense of what i’m saying.

The daily practice of writing at 750 Words is helping me change from self-centeredness (whining about my life and “problems”) to more positivity and self-encouragement. I was getting kind of sick of my own brattiness, so am changing it up to be more grateful and courageous.

I started 750 words because I was interested in self improvement and I was already writing for my blog so I wanted to write more regularly.

I’ve notced that 750 words makes me mindful of the things I do because I only focus on what I’m writing at the current moment. That’s a wonderful feeling I hope many people experience.

Set custom day change times

I work a night schedule so for me, midnight lands right after my break. Sometimes I am inspired to write in the daytime, most times its when I get home (around 2am or so). So a ‘day’ for me is from about noon to 4am the next morning. It’s been a little annoying for me so far because I’ll write about stuff that happened during my day when I get home after work, and then the next ‘day’ for me is still the same day on here. Right now, I’ve jury rigged it by lying and saying I’m from GMT-11 so the day changes at a time when I’m reliably asleep. This had the effect of screwing up the time on my alert emails so I had to do some calculation to change the time to the right time. It would be better if there was simply an option called ‘what time do you want your day to change over to the next’ or something like that. Its not a huge deal but us night owls would appreciate the simplicity.

Nothing about 750 words is extraordinary. . . aside from the impact the site/process has had on my life. There are no bells and whistles here, and there are certainly, no flashing lights. The website is bare and fairly unsophisticated. The daily requirement is minimal—in both commitment of time and mental exertion. But in spite of all the aforementioned simplicities (really, BECAUSE of all the aforementioned simplicities) the results I have experienced through daily writing on the 750 words platform have been nothing short of extraordinary. Thank you!

Though it’s unintentional, my writing on 750 has become a huge part of my relationship with my girlfriend – or at least, with my side of our relationship. I find myself writing about her almost always, and even on days when I have other things to get out, she usually comes up. It’s a great tool for my own understanding of us, and I love the format and everything else that goes with it. Probably someday I’ll be able to look back and realize that 750 kept me sane enough to work with the insanity of being in love across an ocean. I’m looking forward to printing out a year’s worth of entries and binding them into a weird microcosm of life on earth in the 21st century.
