The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I’m loving this practice so far! A well crafted app for phones and other digital screens would be perfect on the off chance I can’t sit down at my computer that day. Keep up the great work guys, you inspire me!

Today I reached a bit of a realisation. Writing has been part of my life since school when I realised that I was okay at it and decided to study Creative Writing at university. However, for someone whose trajectory has been so tied up with writing I didn’t actually write that much. For about 6 or 7 years I didn’t write for pleasure at all. Since Covid-19 lockdown I’ve tried lots of things to keep creative. I’ve been drawing and painting (with mixed success), cooking and making quizzes for friends to keep them occupied during the long, lonely evenings. I’ve had my doubts about all of these things and it’s triggered some pretty bad anxiety about where my life is going. I love my job and I would be a key worker but, having a long term health condition I am unable to help in the ways I wish I could. 750 words has been an absolute lifeline for me. Since lockdown began I’ve written about 5 or 6 short stories which I’ve submitted to various websites and received lots of glowing praise. I’m starting to get back that spark that I had at school for writing. Thank you everyone who makes this site possible, it is a work of wonder. Thanks again. Adam

More text analysis

I actually think that everything is great and I sincerely hope this service never goes down, but there exists some incredible services like Grammerly that show how a computer can really look at text and see areas of improvement. It could be fun to show off “ways to improve” or have the user input things like, “use the word ‘very’ less” and you guys can keep track of the usage. Hope this helps!

2000 days! They weren’t two-thousand perfect days and I copy/pasted my way out of too many (especially lately), but I’ve always come back with something that mattered to me. Short stories, poems, long email drafts to close friends, dreams, memories, and tons of “today I did this, tomorrow I hope to do that” entries. Thank you for creating and maintaining this site!!

I’ve been coming back to this site, off and on, for the past 6 years. When I’ve needed it most, it’s been here. I appreciate the site creators for their consistency with this product, and I hope my ‘on & off’ support will help maintain this site for others to enjoy it as much as I have.

Word of the Day

Somewhere on the writing pad, I’m able to find the word of the day easily, so that I can try to expand my vocabulary while writing.

Dearest 750 team,

Today you answered one of my emails and I was brought to tears with your kindness. I didn’t know how much i needed the generosity and friendship that you showed to me, a total stranger, but I surely did. Thank you from the very bottom of my now full heart.

I know a lot of people have been using this site to vent their frustrations throughout this difficult time of global pandemic. Personally, I have found solace in doing the complete opposite. 750words has been invaluable because I can come here and write about something else. Every night before I go to bed, I sign in and write something unrelated to current events. Maybe it’s a portion of my most recent writing project; maybe it’s an e-mail to a friend; maybe it’s rambling about how much I love Star Trek…whatever it is doesn’t much matter. By the time I’ve thought of 750 words to write about some unrelated thing, I’ve managed to get my mind off all the horrible goings on long enough that I can go to sleep without tossing and turning all night. Definitely worth the monthly payment.

I love the idea of 750 words. I’m building up my profession as a Copywriter and this site helps create an incentive for me. Eventually I would love to write a book and there are other things that I would love to write and this is a great platform to practice sharing my ideas.

As a long time free writer who abandoned practice, I previously used paper. When 750 Words serendipitously appeared at a time when I was ready to write again, it turned out to be a small trip to writing heaven. From day one, I was ready to do daily practice and then it just hit me to do more and went for 50K in a month. Life-changing again. The badges seemed really silly at first but then they became a deal. Sometimes, I come back to the Today page to just add a few more thoughts and blammo, a flood of 100s more words pours out. Cathartic, surprising and mind-revealing. I can just be me here and word dance wildly since nobody is watching. What a gift. Thank you, Kellianne and Buster. Stay in my life everyday for as long as you can!

Stacking

I would love to be able to have a small count at the bottom on the badges, to see how many times I have completed them. Probably more the behavioral than the others, maybe even only the Monthly challenge one. It’s one thing I really like about this other site I’m on, and thought it might be worth looking into here.

Thank you for being there, 750 Words website and community. It really helps me to have accountability, knowing that I’ve pledged here to try to write every day, and the fact that I pay for membership makes me more committed. At first I was on a roll and had months and months with “perfect attendance,” and then I missed a day and it was a chance to get over my perfectionism. I don’t want to miss a day, but sometimes it happens, and that’s okay too. I just remember this is a habit I want to have in my life, so I keep going. And it really is a habit now!

First, THANK YOU Buster and Kellianne for the site! I have churned out 3.3m words over the years, and “750words” is an important part of my daily routine.

The feature I would like is to see features, votes, and testimonials in separate categories. It would make it easier for everyone to see if a feature had been asked for before, and then to vote for it.

750 Words has made me accountable and committed to daily writing. I’m glad I have this goal. Once in a while it’s a pain and I don’t feel like writing, but then I make myself do it anyway. Actually, I speak my entries, LOL. Well done, 750 Words! Appreciate you muchly.

I don’t know how many others are writing a novel this month, but I’m one of them. Yes, of all those people proclaiming to spend this time to write a novel, I’m rewriting the last one I did. 750 Words has brought out the writer in me and been the best brain dump for my mental health.

I’m not sure what it is about 750 words that makes me ACTUALLY sit down and write every (okay, most) mornings that everything else has failed to do before. Is is that i don’t have to write about anything in particular? Is it that I can write whatever I want and no one will ever read it? Is is the feeling of control over the storm of thoughts whirling through my brain? Simple but pleasant font of choice? Or the hand drawn badges you get for all kinds if things?

I’m not sure what it is but I’m glad I found it. One of these days I might stop writing my stream of consciousness and actually finish my novel!

Is anyone else using their daily pages to keep track of these strange times? I feel like a modern day Samuel Pepys, chronicling my everyday life while the plague rages all around. I hope I survive to look back on it I’m years to come. If not, I’m making sure my partner has the password so others can read it.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much 750 Words has benefited me over the years. I look back in amazement at the years when I wrote day after day after day… and then I wonder what was going on during those years when I left each day blank. Overall, though, I couldn’t have gotten through without 750 Words being there to help me process, plan, vent, celebrate, complain, swear, laugh, and create. Thank you!

I vowed to donate $5 if I did not succeed in the March challenge and you know what? I am not sorry that I have to pay! I am not sorry that I broke my 68-day writing streak. A month ago I would have been so bummed. But not today. I was sick on my birthday, March 24th. I was REALLY sick. I was even afraid it could be “the” virus. So I didn’t write. And the next morning when I woke up and went to write my 750 words, I realized I had missed a day and broken my streak. And you know what it did? It gave me the gift of acceptance. Being sick was completely out of my control. As is this virus and the state that our country is in. So I am accepting that missing a day of writing is really NOTHING compared to everything else in the world. I love my daily 750 words sessions, but I missed a day. Oops. Here’s your $5 750words.com – thank you for having this site – I absolutely love it! :)

Suggestion: Make it free to use, but with advertisements

I’m not speaking out of a place of personal experience, though I have done a marketing degree at university.
But I believe by making the site completely free to use it would receive more publicity.
I realise you offer a free month, however the cost at the end might be a mental hurdle for some people, which might stop them from signing up in the first place. And I believe if they tried it they would definitely recommend it to others.
Just an idea, you guys probably have everything under control :)!
I was recommended to use 750 words and I love it :).
