The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Well hello there! What a fabulous idea this is! That was my first 750 words, and I’m feeling pretty good about myself. I can’t say it was anything useful or interesting to anyone else, but what it did achieve was an exploration of why I’m going this and whether I’m going to keep it up. All journeys start with a single step, and I just made mine! So well done to all of you that are part way through your own journeys, however long they turn out to be, and wish me luck in mine!

Thank you, Buster. Thank you.

750words has completely changed my attitude towards writing. I have tried to start a personal journal a number of times in the past. But, it has never lasted for more than a week and a half. Thanks to the addicting badges, stats and analysis on 750 I am now on a 138 day streak. I have written over 165 thousand words over these past 4 months. That is something I never dreamed I could have achieved. The badges and streak is what keeps me going. Seriously.

I have always wanted to write stories, but was never good at it, even though I have a fairly good imagination. But, since I have been writing every day, it is slowly getting easier to get the words out of my brain and onto the page. Up until recently, I have used 750 as a typical journal. Writing about my day and such. Over the past week I have decided to start writing poems and very short stories. The stories don’t make any real sense, and some are just plain terrible. But, I feel that this is a start.

I feel that writing these short stories and poems daily is a form of EXERCISE FOR THE BRAIN. I mean that too. Over the past couple of months, I have noticed my creative side becoming more strong and vivid, something I attribute to typing out my thoughts daily. I have yet to write a coherent story longer than a few paragraphs, but it shall happen someday.

Additionally, I have become addicted to writing every day. I remember one day having to go to work unexpectedly early. While at work, I suddenly relised that I had not done my words. I almost paniced at the thought of losing my streak. xD So, what I did was hammer out a few words on my phone when I had a moments free time. I just about made it to my goal, when I was told I could go home early. I met my goal that day. And then some!

Keep up the awesome work,
Pete from MA

I’m a writing teacher. I teach college students how to write better essays. I’m also a scholar, and I investigate what helps college students to write more effectively, and publish the results of my research. 750 Words helps me write and reflect, and it also helps my students. When I write regularly I gain a valuable, publishable insight about every other day. My students don’t write as much as I do, I know, but I suspect they’re similarly successful.

750 Words, you’re a great habit to have, and a hard habit to break.

It has become part of my morning routine to find my way here and spring into action by writing about the happenings of the day before, and hopes of those things yet to come in the day ahead.

Fantastic site! I fell in love with the fact that it analysed the writing to a degree and am thirsty for more and more ways of tracking my patterns and moods.

I write a daily entry as early in the morning as I can manage. A thorough discussion and self-reflection on the things I’ve done and the things that still need to be done help clear my mind and direct my focus for the day. Thank you, 750 Words.

Today I reached Space Bird status! This site has meant a great deal to me over the past 500 consecutive days of writing. It has helped me clear my head, stumble upon unexpected insights and explore my creativity. It has even traveled with me internationally, allowing me to continue my streak while also serving as a travel journal I can later search! Thank you, Buster, for creating this wonderful community.

Ability to go offline but not break streak

Sometimes, it happens that we write daily 750Words but not be online to post it. Like in if we are out in vacation without Internet. The idea is to predefine the time and span before and later post after that time. If even they cheat they will be cheating themselves. So, this is what I would like to see.

1 day lea way against 'sudden death'

I’m feeling rather despondent because I wrote my 750 words yesterday but somehow I lost a few words and I’ve lost everything, i.e. I have to go back to being an egg :-( It feels very demoralising to lose everything again. Is there any way of allowing a one-day leaway (i.e., if one day is missed, it doesn’t mean that EVERYTHING is lost). I find the badges very motivating but the ‘sudden death’ nature of the current system is actually teaching me to not care because one slip up and all the good work that I have done is lost and I may as well have never bothered.

I wrote on 750words.com for the first time exactly 72 days ago. I haven’t missed a day since. I used to have trouble regularly writing fiction— in fact, I would sometimes go weeks without writing! That’s changed now. I’ve written more than 80000 words on 750words.com, and daily writing has become a habit. Just think— by the time I get my next badge, I’ll have written for 100 days straight and my novel will probably be completed!

I’m back after a few months off. I got a big job offer, which I wrote about in detail here. After figuring out my priorities, I didn’t take it. Now my focus is on creativity, calm, and writing. My research writing is suffering. Let’s see if writing 750 words a day breaks that open as well.

I always felt like my words came out wrong or that my words were unworthy of being written down or that it was too stressful to write because I wasn’t writing with the proper structure. 750 Words has thrown all of that out the window. It lets me write however I want, whenever I want, and for as long as I want. And it really has become a sort of confidence-building, peace-giving thing that I do every day. And on the days I don’t want to write, I force it a little, and I never regret it by the end of my daily entry. That’s what has gotten me to – WHOA 65 DAYS! Wow. See? 750 Words has became my therapist. The prescribed treatment is definitely working.

Today I earned my Pegasus badge – 365 days in a row of daily writing! I never would have thought it was possible when I discovered 750words last summer, but the simple and elegant design of this site makes writing a pleasure. Thanks Buster – you have changed my life!

I’m doing better on the One Month Challenge than I ever have — never made it this far before! And I think the effects of daily writing are even more subtle than I had originally thought. Just get to the end of the month and see what it’s done for you.

An iPhone/iPad app

The mobile site is fine, but a dedicated app with some of the smoothness of the regular site would be great. The only problem is that it takes forever to write 750 words on a mobile device, so I honestly don’t know how much I would use it. But I’m going on an international trip for a week and bringing my laptop for the sole purpose of keeping up with my 750 Words, so maybe in those cases an app would be better. Thanks for your work.

I busted my one-month challenge on the third day! I just got busy and didn’t pay attention. Wall of shame status and fulfilling my failure bargain has made me pay more attention each day to making time for 750words. Making time, showing up, following through are all valuable lessons I have learned using this site that are helping my writing.

I’ve done morning pages off and on before, but I really do love this site because it allows me to not only do a morning brain dump but also write and export ideas and inspirations to other sources. Although I miss doing pages by hand on some days, I have to admit I am much more consistent using this method. And now, I’m on a quest to get all the badges!

I started on here in July, and so it’s a bit earlier to say that this site’s changed my life, but I certainly think it’s very neat and it’s helped me write more often. My girlfriend just broke up with me, and I spent most of yesterday crying over her; meanwhile, I lost a two-month streak. But I’ve written my words for today, and I’m going to bounce back from this, fighting my way, one day at a time. One day at a time.

I think that this site has greatly improved my motivation. In general I’m a very motivated person, but lately I’ve noticed myself challenging myself to new things and pushing myself to stick with them. The fact that there’s something pushing me to do what I truly love—write—every single day no matter how tired, cranky, or not-in-the-mood I am has definitely reverberated to other parts of my life. I can’t believe such a simple idea can affect so many people’s lives so dramatically, but it has. I must thank Buster for this wonderful, life-changing site.
