The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I’m currently taking a break from my NaNoWriMo novel (i.e. procrastinating), so I thought this would be a good time to finally get around to writing a little note here.

I first started writing here back in September. I was directed to the site via a twitter friend. I immediately fell in love with the concept and I’ve written every day since. I wasn’t here to sign up for the September challenge, but I’ve completed October’s and am well on my way to completing November’s as I’m writing my NaNoWriMo novel here (I need that badge).

The badge system is brilliant motivation, the stats provided are fascinating, and overall, the site’s just very pleasant and easy to use, which makes it so easy to keep coming back.

Writing consistently has been a life vest for me. I was in a real bad spot prior to joining, but through writing here as well as at a separate blog each day, I was able to work through things by getting them out in front of me. I’m grateful for this site’s existence and its ability to draw me in and get me to write.

Honestly, before joining 750 words I wasn’t much of a writer. I did a little bit here and there on the subject of video games, but I never took writing very seriously. But look at me now. I’m writing a novel in the span of just 30 days for NaNoWriMo. How did that happen exactly? All I know is that I’m enjoying writing. I’d almost venture to say it’s a legitimate hobby of mine at this point, and I have 750 words to thank for that.

Thank you.

Writing allows thoughts to move from an unstructured stream to a source of unexpected patterns. 750words adds to this by allowing us to go back and revisit thoughts that would normally be lost. You should be very proud of your creation, Buster.

I’ve been writing monthly since May 2nd and now I’m elbow-deep into the NaNoWriMo. I thought it would be harder than I imagined, so to actually crank out a novel one day at a time, not worrying about how good or bad it’s getting is a relief. I’m only concerned with the end and that’s my goal. I believe I can ace this, but we’ll see.

I love the simplicity of it. Just write. Get to the target number. It’s freeing not to have to agonize over every word and whether it’s worthy of a place on the page. I just write the word to the target number. I love it.

An Offline Extention

An offline extension that syncs with a users web account once you reconnect.

When I travel overseas I’m often in impoverished/remote areas where there is no internet. I love the way 750 words motivates me and keeps track of my stats, but unfortunately I will miss out on this whenever I’m gone for a few weeks or months – and its at those times that writing is most valuable to me.

An offline app would be a fantastic for my next trip where I won’t have the internet for about 3 weeks!

I was sort of startled by how meaningful and fun accomplishing the one month challenge was. This site is teaching me in subtle ways about motivation and effort. I love it!

750 words has infiltrated my mind. I signed up for and completed the October challenge to write everyday. I received my blue horse badge and had my name added to the Wall of Awesomeness and you know what, it didn’t work. I am not DONE. I considered signing up for the November challenge but that’s all I did, considered it. Surprisingly, the lapse of commitment doesn’t feel right, so I’m back. Not a perfect score but close enough for me. Thank you 750 words for helping me to fight the voice that tries to convince me that what I have to say, why I write, is not important.

I am writing the novel, for the NaANoWriMo.
Is there a way to link this site, 750words and the NaNoWriMo site???
Thanks Buster…

I’ve never felt as safe with writing what I want as I do on 750words. I love the badge system, I love the layout of the site, I love the feedback and most of all I love that the writing is private but you are still able to share so much of yourself to people in the 750words community. Brilliant idea. Thank you so much.

Some things have a profound and immediate change. Some things are little by little. This site is both. It’s amazing. I can look back 30 days and see the spurts and stutters of things happening and then a few days of rest and then BANG, everything just clicks.

A better mobile site

It would be much, much easier for me to write daily if all the main features of the site were available on an iPad and Android tablet. I hesitate to recommend a native iPad app because a) I think it’s harder to implement and b) it’s obviously not cross-platform.

750 Words so valuable to my mental and emotional health. I would love to have it available to me anywhere, anytime via a good mobile site.

Thanks for everything!

Today marks 600 days in a row for me. I set myself the additional challenge of averaging at least 1,000 words a day each month, and so far I have not slipped. This site with its badges and clean interface has changed my life.

Typewriter Sounds

I love 750 words for the ease in which I can use it and it’s customizable look. I use a similar downloadable program called Q10. I love Q10 in the same way that it’s free of distractions when I’m writing. However, it’s one feature that I’m missing in 750words is the typewriting sound that it produces. Each keystroke produces a tap sound, and a bell wrings when I hit the return key. It provides a nice ambient sound to clear my head and focus on my writing. I dislike having to copy and paste my words from q10 to 750words, because it does mess up my stats and I hope that I can exclusively write in 750words in the future. :)

Today is the one year anniversary of my first turquoise horse. I missed the two months prior to October 2010 and I’ve missed a few months since then, too. The thing is, even when I blow it and miss a challenge, I’m WRITING! More than EVER in my life. And I get to be inspired by me to continue.
(OK, I love the badges. Yes, I do.)
I’m at 229 days/nights in a row and headed for the flying horse. cowabunga! Thanks, Buster!

Write like the wind! The only failure is giving up, messing up a streak is simply practice for getting it right.

I completed my first monthly challenge yesterday. Before October, I used 750words but not with much regularity. Even then, I found it useful. But a whole month of daily writing has made it a habit, something to rely on to bring order to the day and to my work, rather than one more activity I might or might not choose to do. This is a great experiment.

I started doing 750 words because my dad was doing it and I wanted to try it for myself. I started and was instantly addicted! I couldn’t stop! I have tried to write every day since.

750 words has been a relaxing time for me where I can focuse my thoughts without having to share them with anybody else. I like to be able to take time away from my normal day and even though I am on a busy schedule, it helps me have a better focused day where I can think better.

This is also a fun journal to write in because it makes you so determined to get stamps and have long streaks. I also like the feature of our stats which I think is pretty awesome. All in all, I am really glad for Buster Benson for making this website for me.

Thank you,

Kyle

Over the past year, 750words.com has broken me of the fear of the white page. This year, I intend on finishing Nanowrimo. Not once, but twice. I am in the process of writing two 50,000 word novels, bringing my daily word count to a lovely total of 4,000 words. 750words has given me discipline, motivation, and brought back my desire to write. I encourage everyone to bring themselves and their friends into 750, not just for the sake of the writer’s way of life, but to clear your mind, better your day, lower your stress, and above all, give you the freedom to speak your mind with no fears attached.

Write on!

Offline Capability

I’m sure this is long-ago requested, but I can’t find it.

What are the odds of an “app”-style version of 750words down the line for times when we on-the-move laptop users dip in and out of wifi coverage and such? Perhaps something simple that can keep count offline, and “sync” when we finally do get back on The Grid? I love this about Evernote…maybe a plug-in for that app?

Grasping straws, but there’s a workable idea here darn it! :)

I discovered 750 words towards the end of August and didn’t sign up for September challenge, as I never thought I would be able to stick to it. It turns out I signed up for the October challenge and … made it. I decided to help along with some Patronage… and signed up for the November challenge.
I love the concept and love the playful aspect of it. Thanks buster, for putting all this together.

I’m buckling down for NaNoWriMo and am very excited to be getting back to 750words.com on a daily basis. I’ve let too many things get in the way to break my streaks over the last few months and I’m so excited to be able to dedicate myself to writing once again.

Good luck to everyone else participating in NaNo!
