The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I have been writing on this site since February 17, 2011. I have explored other websites and other
journal software. I have not found anything that works better for me. Here I can empty this cluttered bin I call a brain and find out what I am really thinking. This site is just interactive enough. The points, badges and statistics are motivating and fun. I feel I am writing in a library or coffee shop. I don’t have to talk to anyone or worry about anyone looking over my shoulder, but if I look around people are there. I am only as alone as I want to be. It is a safe, friendly place to write. I love 750. It is my healthiest addiction.

Trying to earn the badges is something that really keeps me coming back and striving to better my writing. I would love to have more to grapple for.

Improve the writing page

It would be great to be able to set up some kind of nice and non intrusive sound when one arrives to an specific number of words on the writing page. I write with my eyes closed or the screen switched off for better concentration and relax and an audio notification would be great.

Long term eternity page

The eternity page is awesome. I love being able to track my concerns, emotions and such over time. However, that data only reflects the short term (7 days?).

It would be cool if one could track this data over a longer period. For example, you could see how your emotions have changed over x weeks or months. Ex.: Do I feel less stress than I did 6 weeks ago?

It would be a bit easier doing it this way, rather than using the metadata feature, which requires manually entering in data.

I am a bit of a spreadsheet nerd, so I think it would be cool to be able to download the data via a csv file. Or you could even put the data together with the entries themselves, which we can already download.

Keep up the good work with the site,
Pete

Badges for longer streaks of a given behavior (e.g., being undistractable for 25 days = “super hamster”) would be an easy way to increase the number of badges. I’d also go for earning the same badges multiple times, e.g., hamster badges that stack for each 10 days of being undistracted.

I have been trying (and failing) to develop a daily writing habit for years. With the help of 750 words, I’m on a 50-day writing streak! The freedom allowed by the format allows me to air personal issues so I can focus on my work and also provides a forum for planning and writing ‘messy’ drafts for upcoming projects. Getting out my ideas out each morning provides a sense of accomplishment and general well-being—it’s been a very long time since I felt so on top of my work and life. Thanks, 750 Words!

Love the site. Thanks, Buster, and keep up the good work. My “testimony” is more of a question than a testimony. I’m in the NaNoWriMo contest, but I’ve been writing on my desktop for that. Assuming I come out the other side, how do I show you I got through it? By the way, I’m still doing my 750. It’s just separate from my novel.

Hi. I’ve been using 750 words to write for NaNo during the month of November. It has been so useful in keeping me focused on meeting the 50,000 word goal for the month. I can see just how much I’ve written before copying it over to Google docs or something to the equivalent. I think it could just help inspire me to carry over the practice of consistently writing words from here on out in general!

Writing 750 words daily increased my writing capacities. Give me extreme pleasure and keep me going without hesitation, doubt or fear of writing again later.

The challenge is an awesome exercise! It’s the best way I’ve found to keep me writing every day—which, I’m told, is one of the keys to being an author. Keep writing, you may soon find yourself exploring ideas and thoughts that could turn into something great.

Gutted. I missed the 193rd day of my writing streak. No excuse, simply forgot (not into reminder emails). Must admit I had been losing the motivation. Hadn’t been feeling the writing for a few days. Back to square one today. I am hoping this can inspire me!

I expected 750 to help me get back into writing on the daily, but what I didn’t expect was that 750 would have me completely addicted to writing again like I, for some reason, hadn’t let myself be for a little while now. Thank you for giving me a new space to simply be, and then to simply write.

P.S., the bird badges are pretty fantastic and quite the motivational nudge, too.

New badges!!

I’ll admit it, I’m a badge-maven. I’ll go through crazy contortions to get the early-bird badge or the ‘write without using the verb to-be’ or the ‘article free writing’ or the ‘one minute on, one minute off’ badge. Aside from the continuity badges (which I lost the heart for before you had the ability to put things on pause & I spent a week on a train w/ no internet…), I’ve earned what I can… any chance you might throw in a couple more!??

At first I was sceptical about writing 750 words every day. I didn’t get the idea, but my friend convinced me to give it a try. That wasn’t easy: my mind was sort of tough, and it seemed almost impossible to do this from day to day. Nevertheless, I was trying and trying! Surprisingly, now my memory is much better, and I feel very creative. Never thought clearing my mind every day was so important for my brain. :) Writing on 750words.com became one of my favourite routines: it’s fun! And once you get in, you can’t stop – just don’t want to!

Quirky badges like for “42” days in a row, for having an average word count in a certain range, something like that. Badges are fun. :]
Though I do understand there needs to be a goal to reach (obviously! Like the jump from Albatross to Phoenix) but some fun ones along the way might also be kinda cool.

750 words provides me with the motivation to write everyday. Because of the way this site tracks my writing, I cannot say I wrote 750 words, or even wrote anything if I really haven’t.
This site helps me to remain accountable to myself. Thank you for this great site, I wish I had found it sooner.

When I first came here, I was just looking for anything to help me stop being a slacker with my writing. I still haven’t become the elusive Phoenix, but I keep trying. This site also let me rant about my brother’s health as well as my own no matter what the hour or how pent up with aggravation I was. So thanks for this site. The cup of patronage was long overdue.

750 Words has been a great tool in helping me get off my lazy butt and do some writing. Last year, I stumbled upon this site when preparing for my second try at NaNoWriMo that would render a 4-year-old WIP complete. The stylish set up and reward badges really pushed me and were instrumental in my 2010 win. Since then, I’ve finished the book and moved on to its sequel. Now I can’t imagine a life without 750 Words!

I’ve been unable to write for months now, and 750 Words is exactly what I needed to get going. I’m not a professional writer, but it’s the one thing I have a passion for. I found it at the right time, or it found me. Thank you!

An iPhone/iPad app

An iPhone app would be great to more easily connect with my work. I am easily inspired by seeing so many people online writing that I actually check the homepage, my pages, etc. several times a day on my phone to keep me motivated. It would be great to do this more easily when I am on the run.

I do not know what it is about this site, but somehow it works for me. After trying anything from threats to positive reinforcement, I thought all hope was gone of me ever being a productive grad student. Then I listened to Merlin Mann mention 750 words. Three One Month Challenges later I am actually working on my dissertation everyday and enjoying it. Pure working bliss. 750 words might just have saved my professional life.

The last few weeks have been crazy for me. Our mother had a stroke so we have had to move and completely remodel the house to take care of her. Through all this I had one place to go – 750words.com. It was the one place that was just for me and it taught me that no matter what I can commit to something and stick with it. Today is my 200th day and I intend to still go strong.

Thank you so much for this site!
