The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

750 words offers a way to express thoughts and feelings without judgement or (self) criticism. It’s pure in the only thing that matters is to write with feeling. forget grammar, forget the audience. you are writing for yourself, as an outlet for negative emotions and a memorial for positive ones. A private library of your thoughts, set free from your mind, leaving your mind free.

Over and over again, I come back to this site. There’s something so cathartic about getting words out every day, especially in the morning — something I bafflingly seem to forget every once in a while for extended periods of time. It’s been invaluable for setting up my frame of mind for the day ahead, or clearing out the clutter at the end of the day so I can settle down and relax. I’m not sure how I keep forgetting that, yet here I am again, and that’s all that matters.

This site has enabled me to complete a draft of a novel I had been working on for over a year, and to make significant dents in two other projects. Thanks to 750 words, I was forced out of my writers block and have developed a daily writing habit, something I never thought was possible. Can you guys come up with something that’s as motivating for me for exercise :) Thanks for your work in keeping this site running!

I just ended the longest streak ever. I have been writing everyday for 89 days. And I forgot one day. I am so disappointed because I wanted this badge so much but deep inside, I am not so disappointed. I realized that writing everyday has been incredible. It made me so much good. Since I started again, I published 10 articles on Medium and I wrote many blog posts for my company too. And when I don’t write, I miss it. So I will start again, I will continue writing and maybe in 100 days, I will finally have the phoenix badge !

I quite like things how they are, but I guess my ego really digs the text analysis.

Offline mode

It would be great if there was an offline mode or even a programm, where it’s possible to write the words without being distracted by the internet. The programm could just save the text and then synchronize the next time there is an internet connection.

I have used 750words.com for nearly a year now and it has been the best thing that happened to me last year. I was going through some big decisions regarding my career and what I want to do in life and I noticed, how much clearer I can think when I write down my thoughts. This website has given me comfort when I was scared or sad, it let me let off some steam when I was angry and it let me be europhoric when I was happy about something. It has given me so much and I am extremly grateful for that!
I broke my 322-day streak the other day, which was a bummer. And I think I will stop working with this website now, because I need a writing tool that works offline since I get distracted by the internet so easily. But this website showed me, how important it is for my mental health and my happiness and productivity to clear my mind every day and I will definitely keep that up! Thank you so very much!

I used to fret over missing a day during a challenge month. Then I went through strings of months when I could count on one hand the amount of times I wrote. These days, I remind myself that I need to show up for myself. And if I miss a day, I must keep going, no matter what. Upon my return to 750 Words this time around, I had two goals. One, finish consecutive days in the current month. Two, earn another badge. It had been 5 years since my last badge. I was thrilled to receive the 500,000 words badge last week. I just noticed today. I feel revitalized! I find that once I have been writing consecutively, this good habit leads to other good habits like drinking my 8 glasses of water to prevent the formation of more kidney stones. I make sure I am either doing yoga, walking at least one mile or doing a kickbox cardio workout. Since my badge proves I am capable of producing the volume of words needed for 10 good-sized novels, I have no choice but to keep on going. So I pledge eight cups here to help fuel my continued flow and similar wish for all of you!

Improve the daily reminder email

For some reason I’m no longer receiving the daily reminder emails this week. (It’s currently Wednesday evening where I am and the last I received was Sunday morning.) I tried re-setting that preference yesterday, but this seems to have had no effect. I’m wondering how widespread this issue might be…

I am intensely grateful for this place. For many years it’s been a space where I could vent my thoughts and anxieties, my worries and fears.
It’s where I completed a number of NaNoWriMos, where I wrote the first drafts of poems, where I continue to write stories for my own pleasure.
Thank you for this friendly space to just empty my mind and let the words spill forth.

What a game changer this site and its monthly challenge are for me! I used to write “when I had time” after taking care of the day’s pressing concerns and commitments, but too often that meant no writing at all on any given day. I never seemed to have “extra” time. But now, having accepted the monthly challenge, my first order of business is to write. Wow, what a difference! I get up, have some coffee, and hit the keys. Since my days are pretty full, I may not finish in the morning, but because I am committed to completing the challenge, and because I want the output for books I’m working on, I go back at some point, sometimes after dinner, and finish up. I’m pushing it to 1,000 words, and I find I’m doing great work. Joining 750words.com is a smart thing to do! Thank you for the great resource.

I am using this site to make sure that every day I do creative work. I have ideas to write up and the hardest part is putting down the first draft. I know this doesn’t have to be good, because later I will go over it again and edit it, but every day I must write down some new original material. I am currently working on a novel and thanks to 750 words I am putting together a first draft. I am also taking time at other times in the day, to rewrite and fix that story and make it more readable, but the first draft, good or bad, has to be written every day to keep the flow coming and to put out the hundred thousand words that will be whittled down to eighty thousand or so, after many more months of work. This site helps me live up to adage, that is a simple but profound truth, “Writers write.”

Although the morning “brain dump” has been really good for me, it might not have become a daily habit without the monthly challenge and the chance to earn badges. Writing every day has also inspired me to think about writing creatively again. So, thanks 750words.com!

Good to know about the Double line breaks giving you Paragraphs. I have been writing my new stories here, and then went back only to realize that I could only export one massive paragraph! VERY VERY Frustrating after going to all the trouble of getting things ‘just right’.
Like RH (10thman), I might not mind IF I wasn’t a perfectionist. I can’t just write the words today, and then do MAJOR fixes like that on a story – I would end up RUINING the story – over-thinking, over-editing, never, ever being satisfied. When I just write it the first time, I am usually satisfied to the point that all I really HAVE to do is spell-check and a bit of tweaking to my punctuation (Those damn commas should know where to go all by themselves!) – Which brings up another point – I wish we could have italicized words – as it is I have been using splats to remind me of my intention. Overall I LOVE the site – but it DOES need some tweaking and UPDATING – NaNo badge has not been updated in a couple of years now – isn’t that why we give these people $$money$$. I mean our membership fees – what do they go for if not to update and improve the site???

I just wanted to say again how wonderful 750 words is. We just lost our cat of 10 years, and writing in here has helped me begin to heal. It’s given me a place to express anger, sadness, and acceptance. It’s helped me deal with some of the emotions I wasn’t able to deal with before I added writing to my life (along with specialized treatment and therapy). I can go deep places with 750 words if I need to, get angry and destroy a page, or express happiness and joy. It’s like having a private corner of the world to yourself and I highly recommend it.

It’s really helped with addressing my feelings and thoughts in a healthy way. What I used to do is repress my feelings when I didn’t know what to do and how to handle them. Now I come here and write and vent and usually feel better after having written out my feelings in plain language. – Thanks so much for making 750 Words!

I can’t recall if I found 750 words before I read The Artists Way – but the site, community, and care wth which we writers are supported is rather wonderful. I love sneaking a peek to see who completed at the same time as me. I may not read all of the supportive mails, but the fact they arrive is like a little comfort blanket. I was gutted the last time I broke my streak – an Internet glitch meant my text had not committed. I tried to resume but life was tough – now I am back on the rails again, and have my day of the year calendar sorted with day 200 clearly in my sights – and oh the inspiration of those folks who have stayed on track for oh so many days more. You are my invisible friends and thank you for your invisible support – it means the world to me,

Having a private space on the Internet that’s yet accessible has been the best part of 750words for me. Not sure what this feature entails (since I hope it’s on a secure server already?) but since the option is here I’ll put some cups towards that :)

The badges keep me really motivated. I like thinking I get a prize for writing. It’s fun. Perhaps for every consecutive month that you succeed in a writing challenge there could be a different badge? And maybe a couple in the middle – every 50 days or so would be nice. I love this site. Thank you for giving me a place to expel all my mental garbage so that I can be positive for the other people around me. It has made me happier. I get rid of all the negative and can be a more sunshiny person as a result. x

Update Badges -- NaNo 2018, 2019, 2020...

It looks like the available badges haven’t been updated in a while; the NaNo 2015 badge mentions you’ll be doing another one in 2016, which was a while ago. How ‘bout a NaNo 2018 badge? (I also agree with the person that more badges would be good. They’re working really well for me to keep me motivated! Thanks for your consideration.
