The Good Patrons of 750 Words

I have been writing for 13 months, not every day, but once had a 160+ day streak and now am up to 35 again. I have written more than 440,000 words, not all well placed or goal oriented but even I recognize that is a lot of words. But more than that, I have an authoritative structure to turn to. When I tell my family, “I have to go write now,” they stop chatting, let me retreat and I go write. I also have had a long standing women’s group and when I tell them “I have women’s group tonight” somehow that seems like an acceptable reason to leave them to fend for themselves when in fact I am just going out to dinner with my friends. 750 words has become my support, my excuse for writing, my legitimization. I am still pondering why they respect this space, but they do.
