The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

I love these! The first that come to mind are breaking up some of the longer increments of streaks — say, between 500 (how can there not be a badge for 750 days, amirite?), and some between 1000 and 2000, for example. First, though, should be a badge for those people who have managed the incredible 3000 days. They deserve it!

Today marks my 7th anniversary with 750Words! It’s hard to believe, though from seeing the streaks of others, I know there are many here who have been here even longer than I. It seems impossible, and I still have almost another year to go before I can manage to achieve Gryphon status.

750Words has served several different purposes for me. It’s the best place I’ve yet found to experiment with rough drafts, a great way to write down an informal diary if that’s all that’s occurring to me for that day, and (once in a while) a sanity-saving way to vent and get things off my mind. Most of all, it keeps me writing something, no matter what, and in the end, that makes the biggest difference of all.

Thanks so much, Buster and Kellianne!

Exchange cups for a free month

My suggestion is that after so many cups are achieved (say 20), the user gets a free month of 750Words. Alternately, this could be a free month after a certain badge is achieved, maybe the 100 Day badge.

I am an egg again! After 174 days, the holiday weekend changed my routine and I completely forget about writing yesterday. The streak (POOF!) is gone. An opportunity—is this a longevity exercise or a valuable thought project? It is both, really…the daily writing and the 750 word limit generates the insight. Certainly, every day is not a gem, but within those pages are diamonds, generated by this daily exercise. I start again, today was day 1 and I’ll pass my former streak on Nov 22. Onward!

Very positive feelings about this possibility to write freely. I feel good even when I think about this site.

I discovered 750 words, thanks to the recommendation of a good friend, in January of 2020. Little did I know the year that was ahead for all of us. I think it ended up being a place where I poured my daily concerns and the anxieties of being caught up in a global pandemic. It was (and is) the daily ritual that got me through it. I’m not ready to go back and read through all that I wrote, and frankly, most of it is a lot of mundane drivel. But, it’s mine and clearly writing it helped me get through it all. After 365 days, I took a well-deserved break and then I restarted again on my birthday in March, intending this time to carry on. After all, I’ve kept up a daily photo photo project since May 2008, so surely I can do this too. Thank you for this space in which to do it. And for being that spot of discipline in my life. And please make more badges, I find them very motivating.

I wanted to use half my cups of patronage to recognise my first year of writing with this site. When I began during the the end of the first lockdown here in France little did I know how incredibly useful simply writng each day would be. I’ve vented, been pleased and proud, planned my exercise classes, written recipes but above all had a disciplined routine when all has felt as if it’s been falling apart around me. My heartfelt thanks and here’s to the Space Bird, my next goal.

I found 750 Words through a writing workshop friend back in 2018. I wrote here and there, but the press of caring for my mother at the end of her life made it very hard for me to commit to daily writing. She passed away in February 2020 just before the first wave of COVID hit the US. It wasn’t until summer or fall that I even remembered I had a 750 Words account. In January 2021, I started writing every day. I hit my 100-day mark yesterday, and I am so grateful for the personal motivation this website has given me. It was really hard to start working out again, and there were some terrible days when I didn’t want to write or do anything at all. I pressed through, though, and I now am looking forward to reaching 200 days and 200,000 words. My mother was a writer and artist, and she always liked to remind me that ALL writing is good because it is practice. Thank you, 750 Words and Patricia W. who led me here.

I love this site. I have been on and off for years. It’s so refreshing to be away from the mainstream, corporate-run internet and to just be able to pour out my heart and thoughts on something that is run by ordinary people! Keep up the good work!!

I am thrilled to be heading towards my 100 days and 100,000 words badges! I am grateful each day when words come out that are just plain old human wonderings, pains, lessons, moments of joy, memories, as well as random chore lists that sometimes insert themselves. These things are all getting out! Not clogging me up! The relief I feel is immense. And putting in the daily time of building this habit is helping pave roads of imagination, introspection, activism and forward movement as well. I am a fan, let it be known. Thank you!

I think it would be really nice if we could italicize (or bold or underline, although I’m mainly concerned with italicizing) from the writing page, either through keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+i, etc.) or highlighting and selecting. Sometimes I use this to write stories, and without that, I’m forced to put in a mark that counts as a word whenever I’d like to italicize something later—or just hope I remember when I proof!

I am developing arthritis in my writing hand and I could barely write three paragraphs, let alone three pages. So glad this exists so I can get morning pages out of my head in a safe and private way without causing myself any physical pain! <3

After many years of using this site, I have decided that it is time to move on. But this site has provided me with much needed space to clear my mind when simply journaling wasn’t enough. I will always think of this site fondly and wish Buster and Kellianne all the best with it moving forward. Who knows maybe one day I will be back tapping out more words every day. But for now, farewell! xo

Today I wrote the words for day three hundred and sixty-five. I have been using 750words for many years and I always knew I was capable of doing the words every day for a year, but actually doing it can be deceptive.

It seems like it should be super easy but in fact it is not easy at all. I found it was easy to string several days together in a row but to keep the streak going was at some times no problem and sometimes an uphill climb.

Every day writing the words is a valuable activity and has meaning. Totally worth it. Today I celebrate. Tomorrow, I will write day three hundred and sixty-six.

750 Words has been like a good friend to me, supporting my endeavor to write. I value writing as a means of helping me think through things. Thinking can get muddled easily and quickly, and if I want to make sense I must persevere in the thinking and writing. 750 Words, like a true friend, helped me to not run away when the going got tough. Thank you 750 Words!

750 Words has helped me keep my seventy eight year old mind going clearly. I really depend on that daily reminder “Write your words” I’m hoping the glitch gets fixed soon because I already missed one day. Loving this site for many many moons. Hoping my “BLUE” moon turns to gold. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Excuse me, but i scheduled may 7 off from typing my Seven hundred and fifty words, but obviously your system has a bug because i do not have that day written. Please fix this. I think it may have been the internet connection, but i tried to type my seven hundred and fifty words but the ipad wasn’t connected to the internet because we have been traveling. I would really like you to figure this out because I just lost a two hundred and something day streak. So i am kind of upset. So, please fix this, because i really do not like this and though i am trying to stay calm it is hard.

Recurring Offtime Scheduling

Instead of scheduling time off for a particular period like a vacation, I’d love to be able to schedule time off for a particular day every week — say Saturday or Sunday, where I know I won’t write and that way I don’t have to a) think about scheduling off and b) email Kellianne when I inevitably forget and need to recover my streak.

Improve the writing page

I would love to have a few specific features:
- a dedicated dark mode where all the headers (like my streak and points) will respond accordingly to the background color
- more options for fonts, specifically if i could choose from a list of common google fonts like Playfair Display for my headers & Lato for my body text
- the option to toggle markdown processing on and off, like so that i can bold, italicize, etc in 750words (I do a lot of academic drafting and that would be super helpful)
