The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

the red-letter realization is that I’ve written over a million words since I started on this site. I was someone for whom a high school or college essay threw me into despair and procrastination. I could never think what to say. Look at me now! I respond well to the badges although it’s been a while since I’ve earned one. I pretty much sit down every morning and either free write or generate a couple of pages of memoir, perhaps a poem or an abecedarian bit. I tell every writer I meet about it. Grateful kudos to Kellianne and Buster for 750 Words.

Ability to turn off word counter

Hi! Sometimes I am writing and keep looking at the counter, especially on hard days. It is pretty distracting. It would be great to be able to turn it off, and just write away only to be suddenly notified I reached my 750 words. Not more counting word by word just to make the number go up… Would that be possible?

It just makes the whole writing process so much fun. I was just recently scrolling through the existing badges and making mental notes of the ones I want to get :)

I’ve used 750words on and off for about four years now. I’ve gone long stretches without using it, and I always regret letting it go that long when I get back into it. Now that my life has settled down a bit, I can see 750words taking a prominent role in my routine. It takes me about 100-150 words to get the superficial thoughts out, and then after that, I really start to dig deep and get at the things that are bothering me. I come out the other side happier, more confident, and feeling better about my life. And I affirm it each day I write my words!

(The badges are definitely motivating, though, too)

As a follower of Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, 750Words is a great fit. I started today! I’m excited to join ya’ll.

I’ve been writing my three pages long hand for the past year and find it challenging to then use the content in some of my blogs. So this will be a nice change.

Thanks for re-energizing my writing.

After 902 straight days of writing, I’m headed for Madagascar for 3 weeks (750 words only allows a 10-day break) with no Wi-Fi access so I’ve decided to shift habits and see if I can get writing to stick via pen and paper again. If it doesn’t work, believe me, I’ll be back, as this has been a great solution for me but in a 3rd world country without computers, 750words will no longer be available. Great site, great badges, I only wish there were more!

I will hit 700 days this month, a weird thing for me. I am not much for consistency, so the fact that I have spent 700 days doing something is a huge accomplishment. Through depression, illness, stress I never thought possible I’ve continued to come back and I am eternally grateful for this haven to return to.

Broke my streak for the second time, after 199 days. Writing these entries no longer does for me what it used to and I’d hate to continue just for a silly badge, but this was a fantastic place for me to dump and organize my thoughts during a rather stressful period. Gonna take a break for now, but I really appreciate this resource being available for me when I needed it.

750 Words has transformed me from thinking about writing to actually writing! Instead of carrying these words in my head I am putting them on paper.

Just a quick thank you for the ability to take a break and not lose my streak! I was having a tough time, with company visiting, some health issues, and a couple of events to deal with, all in a short time span. 750 words was turning into a slog, and it’s really never been that, so I took some days off, and now I’m back, and it feels great!

I used 750 words faithfully for over a year. Then I stopped. Now I’m back to resume writing again. This website helps keep me on track. It’s good to be back again.

Month-to-Date Charts

This site is so helpful and easy to use. I especially love the graphs and charts. The information about my perspective and tone for that day’s writing is quite useful. Is there a way to have those charts for the month-to-date? Could that be added to the day’s stats page, below the box for configuring the sharing preferences?

Thanks for creating and maintaining the site. I’m glad to be a member.

I am on my first 83 day streak and month #3 of the monthly writing challenge. I’ve known what morning pages are for two years but I found this website, I could never be consistent and I couldn’t stand myself. Now I use it to journal, practice gratitude and draft posts for my blog. Some day I’d like to be more creative but for now, this has been a wonderful tool to get to know myself again through writing. Thank you.

Badges Progress

I’d love to know how much closer I am to achieving some badges. Ones like word count are pretty obvious, but like the “night bat” one– I’d love to know how many more late nights I have to write before I reach that badge!

Well it finally happened. I was up to over 265 days in a row and I missed yesterday while traveling. I thought i would be more upset about it, but I realized that my pages have become a habit and while missing a day might reset my status, but it doesn’t erase all the days I’ve done my pages diligently. This is part of my daily life. A wonderful part. And that’s enough.

A better mobile site

I would love to use it better on my android and would love an app for it. Maybe one that can save that you did write on a day even if you didn’t have internet access so you don’t miss out on your daily streak.

I would love to have more badges for more things, maybe with the statistics and analysis we get from our writing. I’d also love if we could choose to display one of the badges that aren’t part of the daily streak ones (like The Blue Horse, etc).

I’m super competitive, so as long as you keep bringing out badges I will keep trying to earn them! And perhaps the ability to set one of your behaviour badges (Speedy typist, etc.) as your badge instead of your streak.

I think it is no exaggeration to say that 750words has changed my life. I have always considered myself a writer, but struggled with constant, consistent and crippling writers block. Nothing was ever perfect, or even close to being good enough, so nothing would ever get done.

750words changed my mindset on writing and in doing so changed my writing experience. Nothing had to be perfect anymore – it just had to be. Accomplishing 750 words was the goal. It could be the word “fuck” 750 times (which, full disclosure, I have done before). But it gets done.

And allowing myself this freedom to do anything, no matter how “bad,” has let me create so much more good. I no longer have fear of writing a sentence I hate. I write it anyway. It’s a word count, that’s what matters – I’ll refine it later.

Truly, 750words has made me a happier writer and a happier person. I couldn’t imagine a site I love to use more, and I recommend it to all my friends. Thank you so much for creating this site. You’ve changed my life.
