The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Offline Access

My internet connection is very flaky, and I am always concerned that I won’t be able to find a time when my internet is working that I can write my words. I would hate to loose my streak just because of my internet connection. That is why I think some sort of offline access or desktop client would be good so that I could still write every day, and when I have a connection the information could be uploaded to the site. Just a thought.

I have been trying to get in the habit of writing in my journal for a couple of years now. Luckily I stumbled upon 750 words and now I have a personal record of 51 days in a row of writing. I really feel like it is turning into a habit and I am motivated to make it 100 days. Thank you so much for making this program free to the public and simple to use. The process of writing everyday has proven to be very therapeutic and it is amazing how much a silly little idea like this has helped me in a very real way. Thank You.

I am the quintessential starter. I come up with projects, new habits, etc. and tend to last about a week if I’m really focused. For the first time in a long time I committed to something for 30 days and accomplished it thanks in no small part to how simple and pleasant using the site is. So thanks Buster.

1 cup is a great and fun website to allow a daily “brain unload”. Buster has done a great job of creating this site. He is very interactive and interested in listening to people’s input to make the site fun and more interesting. He is also very quick to respond to any issues that do come up. Thanks and Great Job Buster!

This site has been great in offering motivation for writing everyday, and space to be part of a community that is not gathered around a commercial or self-interest driven enterprise. Thanks Buster, and best of luck with the newborn. I have a 15 month old, and as the one doing the extended breastfeeding, it has been especially helpful for me to find my way back into writing through your site. Parenthood rocks.

adding secondary wordcount goal

In addition to the alert when reaching 750 words, have a customizable second (or more?) alert come up when surpassing that goal to another target for people interested in pressing further every day.

This site has helped me get focused and energized and, most importantly, off my butt and working towards some goals I’ve had for a long time. Thank you so much!

750 words really helped me move forward in a work I’ve been wrestling with for some time. I wrote parts of it as part of my daily writing, but what really helped was the time I spent free writing, just closing my eyes and banging out thoughts about the story and the characters. I’m not 100% done, more like 75%, but I am much, much further in terms of quantity and quality and 750 words is a big part of that. Thanks Buster.

Android App

I’d like the simple Android app. It could just be a glorified text editor that would sync to 750 words and keep the word count. Later versions could integrate the stats views but it wouldn’t be vital.

My blog, Classical music and modern technology, words finally making it out of my head and ono the internet thanks to inspiration from

This place was the spark that lit the flame. I’ve had words and ideas in my head for so long. I’ve always wanted to write – to get the words out of my head and into a shareable format. The writing I’ve done here has finally helped me organize my thoughts well enough to present in a (hopefully) coherent and publicly presentable format. Thank you.

128-bit encryption.

a. 750words user accounts are often tied to real names (via Facebook, etc.);
b. Writers often reveal their innermost thoughts and secrets

it would follow that the data stored on the server would be a veritable treasure trove for hackers. Not to get all ‘Dick Cheney’ here, but can you imagine the disaster which might unfold in the event of major security breach? Considering the frequency by which this type of event occurs on the internet, it isn’t unlikely.

Accordingly, it is reasonable to think that all users of 750words would benefit from increased site security.

Some possible ways to help achieve this:

a. SSL connection
b. server-side encryption of data

I am taking on the one month challenge for May and really hope to be able to complete it. I think by knowing I put a little bit of money into this, it will definitely help inspire me, and maybe this cup will inspire other writers!

Change login method

Great site, Buster, and it’s really helped me get consistent with my writing.

I’ll confess that when I first signed up I was just slamming doors and kicking tires, so I picked Facebook for my login method and didn’t give it much thought. Now that I’m committed, however, I want to change my login to another service that is more permanent to me without trashing all my stats and history. With Facebook’s somewhat unpredictable changes to privacy policies, this kind of option could become popular.

I’ve been struggling with my writing over the past few months, dropping out of challenges and other fiction assignments that I could normally do in my sleep. Having this website has helped me to start tapping back into that wellspring. It’s also teaching me to be a lot more forgiving about what I’ve been writing. So, thank you. Onward and upward.

I love this site! I’ve been keeping a handwritten journal for awhile but have been a little afraid someone would find it. This web site erases that fear completely (as long as I remember to log out of it :). Writing my 750 words a day has really helped lower my overall stress level too. Thank you so much!

My internet service went down late last night, and I hadn’t yet written my day’s words. I told myself that it was okay. Yes, I’d end my month-long streak and lose the April challenge, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. All that stuff’s just for kicks. I would write my entry in a word processor and be pleased that I had maintained my commitment to what was really important: the act of daily writing.

Then I got in my car, drove to my grandma’s house, and wrote my entry on the curb in front of her house, where my laptop just barely picked up her wifi signal. Dear universe: you’ll have to pry my Albatross out of my cold, dead hands.

I believe that writing is a crucial skill. Not just because of how obviously helpful it is in life but because it helps you to relieve your emotions on a blank page.

Reading and writing allows you to share thoughts and ideas across the world and through time. You can take the hand of the great writers of the past, from Ovid to Wilde, and hand it over to the next generation.

An iPhone/iPad app

Please please please! I’m going to be traveling and if I can’t write my 750 words on my iPhone I’m going to break my 21-day streak! Please please please? Or just make the website work in Mobile Safari. That would be not as good, but it would work in a pinch. (Now it requires strange scrolling, very difficult to impossible to use for some reason.) Thanks for the site. I love it.
