The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

This is a GREAT service! I really wanted to say thank you more than anything. 750 Words has provided the space for me to remember I can commit to something I enjoy doing and stick with it! I am on a 27 day streak of writing and have committed to November’s challenge. Once again – thank you for this therapeutic and creative tool!!

!*!Writing is a way of talking without being interrupted. -Jules Renard, author (1864-1910) Indeed this is what I love about 750 words! Thanks, Buster!

Many years ago I began the Morning Papers but continued for only a few short weeks when I was rudely interrupted by the torment of a tortured romance! When a friend told me recently that she was doing them and showed me Julia Cameron’s book I was inspired to start again. I’m still doing them, in longhand, every morning without fail.

Having woken up my writing bug I then discover 750 words. OMG I want to do this one too. Once I figure out that this one being online means I can take advantage of writing in two different ways I can’t not accept the challenge so I sign up.

And what a revelation it has been. All the ideas that were roaming around in my mind for future applications have now been assigned a poem, or a piece of writing of some sort. Some have even been written. This I’m very happy with.

And to top it all off at a poetry performance night the other day someone mentioned NaNoWriMo which I forgot all about until I bumped into it later the next day. Write a novel in a month, I thought! Now HOW could I do that?

On the bus going to the theatre the next night, stream of consciousness notebook open on my lap, with the bus turning my normally artistic script into stunted creatures hobbling across the tramlines, I devise the basis of the novel. I’ll heave out that old idea that’s been hiding at the back of my mind waiting for a book and combine it with something new I’ve been thinking about and voila! If I can write this many words per day I reckon I can write enough to have the first draft of a novel in a month, no worries mate, as they say in Oz.

I can hardly believe that I am plotting this after so many years of avoiding it but see what this writing practice does for you………. Chris Baty said ‘No Plot, No Problem’ and I really believed I would have to figure mine out as I wrote but twenty five minutes on the number 176 with a focused mind and I was sorted.

It really is true that the more I write the more I can write and in the process my brain is making connections I never ever imagined it would.

My thanks to you Buster for having the brilliant idea of putting up this site and for making it such fun; I love the badges and the coffees etc. I’ll say hallo when I come to Seattle next year. I’m sure I’ll recognise you in the cafe.

I was intrigued to try 750words back in April when a friend wrote on Tumblr that 750words had changed his life. I was like, “Ok, maybe I should try it.” So I tried it for a few days in April, and fell off hard. I just don’t think I was ready for the commitment of writing 750 words everyday when I could barely write a paper.

This summer I joined four of my college buddies to create a startup company, so I have been driven ever since to learn as much as I can all day everyday. I think I wanted to use 750words to talk about my daily experience but also a start to my day which now started at 6am, which was a major departure from college. What was 750 simple words turned into a routine which has now turned into necessity. Writing my 750 words is the FIRST thing I do everyday, and I have now done it for 89 days in a row. I have only missed one day since I came back in July, and that was the Friday of the first week (I still can’t believe I did that), but besides that hiccup I am 93/94 since early July.

When I started my first One-Month Challenge in August, I thought it would be tough, but it went by like a breeze. The One-Month Challenge in September was an afterthought, because my true goal has been to get to 100 and get the Phoenix. I am also inching closer to 100,000 words, and that is something that I am truly shocked by. Almost two novels! You kiddin’ me! I WISH I could have found this my freshman year of college, it would have truly revolutionized how I thought about writing. But I don’t try to worry about that too much, I am just glad I have it now.

After I get to 100/100,000 I am going to create more rewards! This is not an official recommendation to Buster, but I think there should be some even crazier rewards. I see on some of these testimonials that other people think they have written around and over a million words, there should be something for that! Or for 250,000 and 500,000 words! And for somebody who has written for an entire year! But if these are not created that’s ok, the main point is not getting the badges, it is this feeling right now as I am typing. The feeling to express yourself on an open canvas is refreshing, and I am always excited to start typing every morning.

As I tell my friends, as long as my brain is functioning and I have fingers to type with, I will write my 750 words. Thank you for making this enormous difference in my life.

Even though I am an author and write a lot, i never would have writen over 750 words every day for over 100 days if not for the badges and the word counter… in other words, if not for this site. I am celebrating my Phoenix badge and my new habit of daily slowing down, introspection, dreaming, and playing. Thank you Buster.

Timers

It might be fun if there was an egg timer feature, allowing the writer to select a time limit to write their 750 words in. For example if I could set it for 15 minutes I could rush toward the end.
Also, Dr. Wicked has some fun features where if you stop typing the screen changes color and a cacophony of sound comes form the computer to ‘prod’ the writer into continuing. That could be fun :)

750 words has given me the chance to sit down and reflect on my day. I am now able to sort through my emotions and be overall less stressed out. It also allows me to take time away from my busy schedule of high school work and let me just write and get my feelings out. Thanks so much 750 words and Buster for letting me have a time to relax each day in high school :)

This is an excellent habit and a great way to give a little something back, so everyone benefits from the personal activity of bleeding off excess thoughts and ideas. While extra badges would be nice for people stuck in the limbo between Albatross and Phoenix, they’re certainly not the ONLY reason I keep coming back to this site daily. Right?

Finishing a Month Challenge is a great accomplishment. It really does make your day much more meaningful because you have either captured the important thoughts you couldn’t get off your mind or release the unimportant thoughts that are blocking the good ones.

There’s clearly so much data in the words, use it to tease out badges. The badges could be a public way of commenting on your stats without telling people too much about you.

It usually takes me a couple minutes to log into 750words.com, as I have to load three different pages before I can start writing, and this site loads slower than others for me. Would it be possible to set up a “stay logged in” system so we can skip the landing page and the sign-in page?

The one month challenge is great as it provides a little bit of extra motivation to get the words written and it’s pretty cool to be added to the Wall of Awesomeness. Writing and reflecting is so important as telling stories is one of the essential parts of being human and it makes us better and well rounded and happier.

My new 750 word habit is a gift. I look forward to my words every morning and greet them with a “hello friend.” I alternate between brainstorming Plan B’s for places in my life or work that cause anxiety, and then face them in the day…well, with a Plan B; making lists — todo lists, to not do lists; and sometimes starting scenes for a novel — as in, why not start now? Thanks for this funny hopeful supportive site. I am grateful.
