The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Details on the rooster and the bat

Today was my fourteenth day of writing in the morning, as I am seeing what it’s like to write in the morning while I try to get a rooster badge. (I prefer writing at night, apparently, because I am brain-dead in the morning. Good to know.) But it would be nice to know how many days are required for the rooster and bat badges so that I can tell if the end is in sight. Or… sonar.

Titles/Index

I wish I could title my daily entires and see them listed. I know I could type the title in the first line and deal with all that on export, but it would help me to remember what I was musing about and how I was feeling from day to day if I could see even the first sentence of the entries you have stored for me in a given month. I have envisioned exporting on a monthly basis, but I suspect I’ll be doing it more frequently as I get into less spontaneous writing and more writing with prompts…. all part of my master plan, bwa ha ha ha….

I am extremely happy to have seen a recommendation for this site on Twitter. I feel extremely fortunate for the nudge that it gives me to write every day. I’m only a turkey now, but wait and see…. ;-)

I have led an interesting life – in one of those “may you live in interesting times” ways. It has greatly effected how interactions are made, what is thought, what is done on a daily basis, and has generally made things difficult.

This site was recommended in November, to help with NaNoWriMo word counts. I failed (sixth year straight – go me!) but have been hooked on this site since day one.

This site has not only helped straighten out a daily routine, with the exception of the days where there is no internet access at the house, but it has truly made a difference in my outlook on life. The same things happen day in and day out in a cycle that will one day be broken, but until that freedom from this forced lifestyle is found, this site provides a sanctuary where thoughts and words can flow freely without judgment or ridicule.

Thank you. You have saved me.

Writing every day has cleared out the dust in my mind. I already feel like the words come easier, that ideas can be chased and that I’ll have the wit and fortitude to follow them. I’ve written a short story already, and broken past a long fear of being unable to complete anything.

750 Words has made it addictive and so simple to write regularly every morning. Now there is no excuse to avoid free writing daily.

Buster,
As I sit unable to sleep on this ice crusted New England morning, I have to thank you for this wonderful creation. 750words has helped me in some surprising ways and I never thought that it would become a need to write a daily brain dump entry.

I also wanted to say, yes, I agree with the patron who said something along the lines of needing a congratulatory email or something to signify completing a monthly challenge. Just like the silly badges (yes, so silly we all crave them!), I found myself doing a little carpet strutting when I completed the challenge but felt a little let down that there wasn’t more “bang” to completing it.

Oh, and speaking of silly badges, what in the world are the hours for the rooster and night bat badges? I have written at all sorts of crazy hours of the a.m./p.m. and still have never hit those badges.

Thanks again for such a wonderful creation!

Improve the daily reminder email

I love that the nudge email reminds me during the Monthly Challenge what my contract said and how well I’m doing, but it would be excellent if the first nudge of the next month could congratulate me on going the distance (or a separate, non-nudge email would work too), and say “Look what you’ve scored for yourself! [reward in contract]” or something. I can’t explain why this would feel as satisfying as I’m convinced it would, but I find I’ve been pining away for a congratulations email all day long…

Buster,
I bought a cup of patronage far in advance of my need tonight, just because I want to make sure you know I so value 750words.com. I find myself telling everyone I can corner about how motivated I am by these, well, wonky badges, and by the loveliest emails with a rose from a man I do not even know. Those badges have become more meaningful than any of my girlscout badges ever were to me.

So it turns out that what seemed a little wonky to begin with has turned my life, which had become horribly unstructured (after having to leave teaching on disability) into something really productive and happy. Thank you so, so much for giving me back my writing.

Best,
Heidi

750words has benefitted me in a number of different ways – but by far the most important by forcing me to finish the first draft of my work-in-progress novel. Since achieving his seemingly impossible task I have perhaps understandably been evangelising about the site: http://catmachine.tumblr.com/post/3029327624/a-moment-of-evangelism

Ever run out of words to write? Try reflecting on the things, people, events, etc. in your life that you’re grateful for. You may be surprised by how much you can write about this everyday. I’m forever grateful to 750 words for giving me the space to do so :)

Badge for writing an entry on a mobile device

Recently I was away from my computer and I had to do my entry using a mobile device. I think anyone that can manage a full entry using just the tiny keyboard on a phone deserves a badge.

Thoughts are wild beasts. They can overwhelm, they can confuse, they can bedazzle. My thoughts used to feel like they were uncontrollable – they flew into and past my attention like bees at a hive. 750Words is my beekeeper – it’s allowed me to tame my wild thoughts. Now, I am able to focus my attention, and know that I have a place to put my errant thoughts. If I ever need to find them, I know where they live.
