The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

OK, I know this is happening way too quickly. 10 days ago I’d never heard of 750words; now I’ve been writing 10 days straight and I’m obsessed with my stats and a patron and there’s nothing I look forward to like sitting down in the morning and writing my 750 words and I’m in utterly in love with the site THERE I’VE SAID IT – I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU 750WORDS.COMMADLY PASSIONATELY IN LOVE AND I WANT TO BE WITH YOU ALWAYS!

See you tomorrow.

More languages in the text-analysis system

I would really love to have the text-analysis system do other languages, like Dutch in my case. Take a look at what wordle.net is doing, they have the option to choose from lots of languages. I understand that analysis is something different.. Another option is to disable it. Right now it’s useless for me.

this would let writers write anything they want without fear. i have difficulty writing freely and often find myself censoring what i have to say, and this improvement would definitely help a lot. otherwise, this site is awesome! keep up the good work.

More badges for accomplishments

I’d love to have a blog badge that I can put on my blog that shows some of my stats like how many days I’ve written in a row, my total word count, etc. It would not only help spread the word about 750words but also provide me more accountability to make sure I get back here and write every day – which I’ve down done for 53 days in a row!! I do wish there was a 50 day badge and a 50,000 word badge. I’ve just passed one and I’m quickly approaching the other and it’s been a long time with no badge. Love, love, love the site and how it has helped me stick with writing every day no matter what for these last 53 days.

I never expected, when I started writing my words here, that 98 days later I’d still be doing it. What a marvelous site. Not only it helps me cope with some stress in my life, but also to improve my writing skills. Not being a native English speaker, I often have to write scientific papers in that language. The practice gained with 750words has made my writing noticeably more fluid and understandable. Being able to write privately, without concern of what others may think is liberating! I could do the same on a text file somewhere on my computer, but here my words are protected (I really DON’T want some of them out in the open…) and I have the incentive of not breaking the streak and earning achievements. A great site, indeed!

Better scoring algorithm

Right now, if you write your words every day, you get the same amount of points as hundreds of other people. A better scoring algorithm would make things more interesting. Say, taking into account the speed and number of words in any given day to award points for that day?

While writing the text is its own reward, I’m sure you could think of more badges to award diligent writers. Out of the top of my head: writing 1000 words 10 days in a row; having a diverse vocabulary; not cutting&pasting text for 10 days; computing readibility scores (some are very easy to calculate) and awarding the most readable texts (this could also be part of the statistics page…); etc.

Shock the monkey?

Could you develop a way to send small electric shocks to people who aren’t writing enough? I would find that helpful as long as it doesn’t permanently injure my gadgets or my brain.

I’m a big fan of the badges and I’m willing to bet that with all the data/numbers you follow, you can derive some additional ones to reward positive writing behavior.

With the sort of “private, unfiltered, spontaneous” writing we’re doing here, it’d be scary to imagine our words getting out!

An iPhone/iPad app

I love the site, but a native iPad app would be cool for sitting around a coffee shop banging out my daily 750.

I just broke my run of 105 days due to illness. I thought I would be devastated about having to start again. The me from 106 days ago would have been.

I don’t mind that I am an egg again. I will hit 100,000 words soon and I am proud of myself getting this far.

I started out on this site thinking that using my computer was cheating and the only way to do morning pages was on paper. I was wrong. This feels so right!

Thanks for a great site.

I’m not even sure where I heard about 750 Words, but I have to tell you it has really changed my outlook on writing. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, a serious writer, and have always known that the key to actually becoming that writer is to just sit down and do it. Writing for a little bit each day, just getting words down on paper is a huge help, even if it’s just a journal entry it helps. So I continue to come back here and enter monthly contests and try to win as many badges as I can and look forward to writing every day, to seeing that little green box pop up up in the corner of the screen to let me know that I’ve succeeded in my daily goal.

Thank you, 750 Words. You have no idea how much you’ve helped me!

Today my stats page told me I was upset and I wrote mostly about death, haha! I was only musing on the origin of morality and the nature of humanity. But it does sound more hardcore to say I was upset about death. 750 Words, you are great.

Ah! 750 words!
Some days you’re like pulling teeth. I curse your word count and bang the typewriter like an ape. My thoughts refuse to flow.
Some days you’re easy breezy, a joyful outpouring of unihibited brilliance. Twenty minutes and I’m done, no problem.
Every day you’re worth it.
Dear 750 words: I love you. Passionately. I am sticking with you for better or for worse.
Have two cups. It’s the least I can do to say thank you.

What started out as a challenge has turned into a wonderful habit. I look forward to sitting quietly with a cup of tea and my thoughts every day, and have realized that writing has helped me to understand myself better, work through problems or challenges and be a calmer and saner person. Thank you!

This site is amazing! The game-inspired features have me coming back every day and forces me to have about 15 minutes a day to reflect on what’s going on. Since I’ve started using the site I’ve had a clearer head throughout the day, been able to focus more on work and tasks, and have been able to more clearly articulate my goals. Thank you!

Tagging

I’m sure this may have already been requested in some form, but I’d like to tag my daily entries and be able to pull up all entries by tag. If I am musing about a book or short story idea, I’d love to tag it as such. Multiple tags would also be nice, because Lord knows I’ve rambled through several topics during one sitting. You could then create individual tag clouds or daily clouds or tag clouds based on different types of people, etc. I think that would be the coolest result of instituting a tagging system.

Thanks for your hard work. I have just recently found 750 words and it’s been wonderful for my focus and just as a reminder that I do indeed really want to be a write someday! :)

Thanks,
Jeff

I’ve just recently seen my 100 days and my 100,000 word badges appear on my status page. I cannot believe that I actually have followed through with this. They say it takes 66 days to create a habit and I am glad that this is one of mine now. It definitely helps keep me in better spirits when I can work out things in my life without having to share it with the entire world.
