The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

This site changed me, everyday I start my morning with the 750 words, luckily I can finish my 100th day yesterday.
Thanks for helping me clarify my brain, brainstorm my ideas, and let me get in touch with myself again.

Now I am a man with a plan and I use this site to plan not just my everyday work, but I plan my life.

thanks so much, :D

As a new mom, I thought my days of journaling my thoughts were gone forever (or at least for a couple of years!). 750 words has made it possible for me to keep writing, though, and to continue with the reflection and breakthroughs that putting pen to page have always facilitated. Thanks, Buster!

I wrote for my 100th consecutive day today. In the past 13 years of trying to write three pages a day it is the first time I have hit this milestone. The silly badges, the word counter, the top 100, the community of writers, the monthly challenge all contributed to my making it this far. The dividends are, as they always are, a clearer head and a happier and more productive me. Thanks for this site Buster. I am beholden.

I just got a cheetah badge for being a ‘speedy typist’! Go me!
Here’s hoping writing 750 words a day will improve your typing speed as well…

750 Words is nothing short of Awesome (as in Captain Awesome. I bet he uses 750 Words every day.). It helps me clear my mind for a day of writing and working productively. It’s like a todo list: the point is to get it out of your head and on to the paper. 750 Words just makes it even more fun.
Also, the interface and design are top-notch. I could just sit here and stare at the beauty of it all.

titles for journal entries

Someone mentioned this earlier and I agree: the ability to title my journal entries. It would make it easy to find entries later on when am wanting to expand on something that came up in my journal writing.

Thanks again for a fantastic site!

More Badges!

I would like more badges as it’s the hope of getting that 100 days badge that’s been keeping me writing daily. Maybe a 150 days and 200 days and… just more badges. Getting a gold star as an adult is just plain nice!

Do list

The narrative reminds me of all sorts of task I need to work on. I’d like to be able to put a “DO:” as they come up and then have the do’s e-mailed to me when I’m finished writing.

750 words has helped me de-junk my mind. I am not trying to write compelling stories, just say what I have to say. Sometimes my unspoken thoughts are just plain wrong. When I type them to the site, it suddenly becomes noticable “Wait, that’s not right. It’s not true my spouse NEVER cooks a great meal.” So I am learning that some of my mental talk is gobbledygook. Thanks mucho!!!!!

Everything from the simple, clean interface where the typing occurs to the reminder emails has helped me become a much more productive writer. Whether I’m brain dumping journal-style or hashing out story notes for a piece of fiction – the site has been a terrific help and motivator.

Never underestimate the power of a cheap icon. I started writing 750 words a day in April, but didn’t go for the challenge; that started in May, and I was doing well. Hadn’t missed a day, hadn’t even skipped a beat. Time to feel smug. Then the stomach flu swept through my house, starting on a day when I hadn’t done my words in the morning. That was a big mistake! As the clock inched its way toward midnight, I managed to find just the right moment between fits of nausea to crawl over to my computer and pound out 751 words. Without cheating! All because I needed that Badge of Awesomeness. Wow. So in the end, score it 750 Words – 1, Intestinal Flu – 0.

Keyboard Shortcuts for Formatting

Would be great to have some kind of very basic keyboard-shortcuts for formatting your text.
Just the standards:
“Command +B” for Bold
“Command + I” for Italic and
“Command+U” for…
By using keyboard shortcuts instead of buttons the interface can stay as nice, simple, and beautiful as it is, but those of us who want can get some extras to give their confused thoughts at least in visual orders. Thanks for everything and keep going :)

Moar badges! I wanted to put my cups into the pot for the monthly challenge, but sorry, badges are more important to me. Going for that Phoenix is all that stops me from being lazy when I’m running late on a day.

I love the badges, so I’m voting for more of them. Something between 30 and 100 days would be nice. I’d also like to see something on the site to explain what each badge is for and how to earn it. I still haven’t figured out how to get the cheetah badge!

I finally finished a monthly challenge, and I loved that it felt like such an accomplishment. For someone like me, who needs encouragement to finish anything, this site is great! I mostly use it to flush out ideas for my fiction-writing hobby, but it’s also great for getting other thoughts off my chest.
Here’s hoping some kids here in Seattle learn how much fun writing can be.

Buster, this bounty is dedicated to you, old chap.

People forget that sometimes journals and word ramblings can get as illegible on a computer screen (despite font restrictions) as they used-to-could via the pen & pad method. But there is something about 750 words and its structure that prevents things from getting out of control. Which, for freewriting, is a hidden requirement.

So yes, let us freewrite-away here on 750 words, but let us also toast Buster for constructing a movable fence, a summit, a challenge, a word math system, and of course, a bounty for consistency.

This cup’s for you, Buster.

It would be really helpful if writer’s could bookmark specific sections in entries. That way if writer’s want to go back and find writing on one specific thing, they can do so easily if they’ve bookmarked it. This is a good tool for people who are professional writers and use 750 words for idea flushing.
