The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Thank you for this amazing site. Everything is easier when I begin a day with writing 750 words. After years of trying to handwrite my “three-pages a day,” this site has finally helped me to become successful. I love the badges and the little X in the box at the top of the page.

Metadata display ranges and 3 other suggestions

1. In the metadata comparison chart, enable the compared data to be on a second Y-axis.
2. More importantly, allow a manual setting range for displaying each metadata item.
For example, I want to compare my weight over time with the number of items of crap that I’ve eaten daily. So I might have 100.8 (kg) on the one axis, and this is only ever going to change by … say 10kg over a period of months/years. When compared with 0 to 15 items of crap eaten a day, on the same axis the visual is meaningless because the amounts are so vastly different. I’d like to have a simple axes min and max box for each item that is saved in my settings or somewhere. So for my weight I might put a max at 105kg, and a min at 85kg (apparently my ideal weight), and for my Crapeaten metadata, I might have the range from 0 to infinity.
When I now see these two together over time, I can see trends and cause-effect patterns.
Some other range might see the minimum as -10 and the max as +10 (eg a rating scale).
3. You might also create a little window in the top right of the writing page called TRACKER or CHECK-IN and there our metadata check-in can happen without affecting the word count or the analysis of mood etc. I had seen my swearing, negative and anger ratings unusually high because of my metadata name being CRAPEATEN and then talking about the number of “serves of crap” that I had consumed…
LOVE this site (and Health Month). Thank you.
4. P.S. sounds peculiar, but consider creating an affiliate program. Credit them 10-20% of anything spent by those they introduce. Perhaps they can use it for cups, donations, buying lives, patronage, … etc… or in case of an uncontrollable influx of cash, you could even send them a cheque… :)

I am loving this site. I have succeeded in completing a i month challenge and have written over sixty five thousand words in a timescale that I never thought would be possible for me. I am also recovering from my depression which I have had for years. I feel ten years younger. Thank you so much for this. I won’t be able to keep up my streak beyond fifty days or so this time because I will be away from the technology on holiday bit no matter I will go for 100000 words instead and restart my streak in pursuit of that. I hope everyone else is getting as much out of this as I am. Keep typing!

I write with my eyes closed much of the time – it helps with the not judging what I’m writing, and just letting it flow. It would be nice to have some kind of gentle audio alert when I reached 750 words, so that I wouldn’t have to keep checking with my eyeballs, and just keep going…

Ability to plan days without internet access

I love this place. Because it forces me to take time for myself at least 20 minutes every day. I am now up to 66 days… and I am so proud of myself. But I don’t know what I’m doing to do when I’m on vacation next summer, with no access to an internet connection. Will I lose my streak? It means to much to me. Buster… can’t you do something about people like me? Like allow us to determine in advance the days we won’t have internet access, and not lose our streak for these days… And we could have a yearly limit, like 10 days or something…

Welp, I had a nice little testimonial written up, but it locked me out and I lost it. Here’s to saying that despite its little quirks, 750words.com is still the best thing out there, and I love it to pieces!

Buster,

Thanks again for putting together and maintaining this site. It has been a great experience for me to come here daily for the last some odd eight months or so and be able to practice the craft of writing. I sometimes read through the notes that others have left for you and am amazed at all the things that people ‘want’ to make the site ‘better’. At some point, I would hope that they realize that while all the badges, stats and other things are nice, it really is about just writing. So just write. Thanks again for your hard work in keeping the site running!

I started out writing my words today feeling bad, and halfway through I was feeling WORSE. Nothing was good about my life. Then I found myself trying to save myself by listing small things that are good (example: penguins). Then somewhere along the line I was thinking about how I wanted to reorganize and ramp up my charitable giving plan, and around 1000 words later my mood isn’t wonderful, but it’s better than before I started writing, and I didn’t think I’d achieve that today. It seems like a little thing to say “My day was a bit better after 750 words,” but it’s a little thing that makes all the difference.

Some tweaks for words per minute stats

Right now, the Eternity page seems to count Words Per Minute as an overall thing—including idle time. This is unkind to writers who like to type their entry and then come back later in the day to add more, as it factors in those extra hours between writing. On individual pages, there’s a distinction made, between total time and “time actually writing”. Why not only factor in the latter for the Eternity page, giving us a more accurate picture of how fast we type rather than just how long we have the browser window open versus how much we type?

Thank you, Buster, for creating and maintaining such a wonderful community of writers. Writing 750words is a fully ingrained daily habit now, and it continues to help me clear my head and unleash my creativity. And thank you for the new Pegasus and Space Bird badges. Hitting the 365-day mark a couple of weeks ago was its own reward, but I have to admit that seeing the Pegasus badge today made me VERY happy!

method of saving that works

every day for at least the last 10 days, i’ve clicked either the word count at the bottom or hovered over another link (which brings up the “quickly saving your…” green box on the top right.) and EVERY DAY it chops off anywhere from 20 – 50 words. EVERY DAY. PLEASE fix this, as i have to go back and “finish” writing if it lowers be below 750, which it often does. thank you for an otherwise great site.

btw – it took me $4 to write you this, if you think about it. kind of funny, cause i know you “like to hear from us” via regular email. i’ve already regularly emailed to no avail. doesn’t mean i’m upset, just means i’d REALLY like save to actually work. please please please.
thanks.

After a long and circuitous route through graduate school I’ve found myself in the last few months of dissertation writing. I’d always assumed it would get easier at the end, but I have spent countless mornings fretting over the littlest things.
750words has been my salvation. It is the first place I go each morning, and it gives me a space to warm up my fingers and clear my head. I can set goals for the day or vent frustrations. I am grateful for this resource and for the things it has allowed me to learn about the writing process and myself.

Since I’ve been old enough to hold a pencil, I’ve been trying to keep a journal. I’d never been able to sustain one for more than three weeks. That’s close to four decades of trying and failing.

Fifteen months ago I decided to give it another go. Since we live in the future, I looked around to see if some online tool might help me keep on track. That’s when I found this site.

Fifteen months later, I’m still here and writing every day. To have done this, to have gotten beyond my past and finally done this seemingly simple thing, is a tremendous achievement for me.

I would not have been able to do it without this site.

Buster, thank you for setting up this wonderful space. May everyone who finds the way here be as inspired and empowered as I have been.

Thanks for the new badges; I’m looking forward to earning them. This site has helped me organize my thoughts better than anything I’ve tried. Better than other journaling. Better than centering prayer. Better than long walks. Who knew?

I got so excited over the newly added Pegasus and Space Bird badges that I just had to break down and write a note. Buster, this is a truly amazing site. I’ve been writing for 88 solid days now, and haven’t missed one since I discovered this site. It’s been so helpful to me that I’ve been recommending it to every person I meet who even mentions that they like to write. I love the simplicity of the site, and the animal badges, somehow, give me an enormous about of motivation. I may be a lowly albatross now, but one day, I’ll be a space bird – that’s my goal. Thank you so much for this site! It’s amazing!

In the last year there has been nothing in cyberspace (and that’s a BIG space) that has been as consistently helpful to me as 750words has been. The daily writing process has a uncanny ability to both soothe and focus. I have so much appreciation for the site, and for the care that Buster puts into making it better all the time. It’s good for you!

Ooooh! New badges! How wonderful to think about writing every single day for an entire year, to have a flying horse badge. And would I, could I, get the space budgie badge? Only time will tell. Thanks for these simple pleasures, its a great way to start the day.

I never would have believed that writing every day could be so powerful. And the silly badges are incredibly motivating! If I know I’m going to be out late, I write earlier in the day. If I know I’m going to have time, I wait and write before bed. On those days when I can write before bed, I’m able to sleep much better because I no longer have jumbled thoughts floating across my mind. Writing 750 words has helped clear out the flotsam and jetsam in my mind.

I can’t even begin to explain what this site has done for me and my soul. Instead of burying things deeper inside my afflicted mind, I write out my problems and troubles. And guess what? I can deal better with all these issues and actually come to a solution. Imagine that!

Ability to place tags

The ability to tag a place, word, or phrase in your writing to be pulled out in a separate place on the site. Sometimes I don’t want to disturb my writing and would love to tag things in my writing (i.e. todos, reminders, etc).
