The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Monthly Challenge and/or Day Streak Forgiveness

Okay, I know I’m not the only person here who has felt absolutely TERRIBLE when they miss a day in either the Monthly Challenge or just in general and instantly, there goes that X amount of days streak. Sometimes, real life gets in the way and it’s out of our control.
With that said, I suggest that there be a feature implemented for this site to “forgive” us for missing a single day. Only one, lest people take advantage! So whether the “punishment” to make up for the previous day be writing double or triple the usual word amount and/or offering the chance to donate a set amount of $ even to erase that one day mistake, it would most certainly be lovely.
Anyway, that’s my suggestion for the month… a month I was signed up for the Monthly Challenge and that I missed by a single day with only three days in May left! Ouch…

Daily Badge Holder Totals

I was wondering if we could see the total number of people on the site who had earned each badge (as of the day before.)

On the Today’s Writers page, on the right hand side, you have a column that shows all the possible badges and how many writers with that badge had written so far that day.

Could you also add a second number after the first that shows how many people total from the previous day had that badge?

So for Albatross, it would show the badge, then 56/209

Meaning that so far that day, 56 albatross badge-holders had written, while as of the day before, 209 people had that badge.

Sorry if my suggestion doesn’t make sense. Guess I need to keep writing to polish those technical writing skills.

Thanks for the great site – it is a great resource for me.

More badges

A badge for 500,000 words would be awesome. A badge for completing the monthly challenge multiple times would be cool as well. Other badges would be appreciate. They are wonderful motivators.

I have recently walked on my (now ex) boyfriend of five years cheating on me – with our roommate. As of today, this site will not only help keep my sanity intact, but will serve as a documentation of newly found freedom, and the decisions (both good and bad) that will shape the rest of my life.

Having tried to do that on blog sites and other such things, and having failed miserably, I am confident that the pegasus badge will be mine… eventually. Bring on the challenge!

This site has enriched my life and for that I am grateful. I am no longer afraid to be creative and break through the barriers of writing. I have since been able to boost my grades in school and it all stems from this site!!!

Thank you!!!

Writing every day at 750 words has been a big part of some major life changes, and investment in me, that I began this year. Just that little bit of support that comes from knowing that I’ve got a running count of my entries, words and badges gets me to the page when otherwise I might let it slide. Thanks for showing me I’m much more disciplined than I ever knew. A great confidence builder.

Not only is 750words a great way to clear my mind and get ready for the day ahead; it’s also a great thing to do as I sip my morning cup of coffee. The combination of caffeine and inspiration helps me start most every day off one the right foot!

Simple and inspiring. Writing daily helps me become present to my life. I stopped jounaling after having children almost eight years ago. 750 words, through its word count, stats, badges and daily e-mails keeps me going. Thank you for bringing me back to the page. It is a quiet, special space just for me and a daily reminder to reflect and live with intention.

Privacy Policy

Like most other sites that gather personal information, this site should have an official policy detailing how our information, personal writing and stats will be used. I would really like to see a guarantee that none of it will ever be shared or seen by anyone with the exception of aggregated, impersonal stats. The policy should also explain how long our data is kept on the server after account deletion.

It is currently exam season at University and the last thing anyone wants to do is revise. We are all looking for ways to motivate ourselves and with two jobs and a very busy life, this is especially true for me.

I have always been a great believer in self improvement and this site, which I found early last year, sounded like a fantastic concept to me. I try and write every day, however when I forget I get very annoyed at myself and don’t write for a week or so.

In those few days I don’t write though, there is a noticable difference. A large mind cloud lurching over me day and night that I never noticed was there before 750words, and now every morning before a lecture or before hours of studying, I log onto 750 words and clear all the junk out of my head. Then I am ready to fill it up again!

More badges for accomplishments

There’s a number of things I’d love to see develop further — an iPad interface, the possibility to use tags in one’s notes (… and, er, perhaps even the use of footnotes? I realize I’m probably the only sad, academic writer to conceivably aspire to those in my morning pages, but a girl can hope, right?!) In the short run, though, I’ve found the badges to be very motivating and would love to see a few more: A three-week one, perhaps, or one that could fit snugly between the “30 day” and “100 day” accomplishments, a badge for writing consistently more than 1,000 words, etc. I realize at some point habit takes over, but for those of us who (like yours truly) are motivated by pretty colors and shiny stickers, a few more badges would spell even more writer-ly happiness!

I am on my 22nd day of the May Monthly Challenge. I’ve tried and tried and never made it this far before. Just being able to empty my mind of things that are bothering me helps me to get on withy my day. So thank you, Buster, from the bottom of my heart. Here’s to making it to the 31st!

I’ve posted before about writing daily on 750words.com. I’ve been journaling for over 30yrs and writing daily for almost 3yrs. Writing online at 750words has been a major change and one I truly enjoy. Today, I passed 200,000 words of daily writing since Aug 2010. That’s roughly the equivalent of 2 novels. I feel I’ve really accomplished something. For years, journaling was that accomplishment. Now, it’s daily writing. I’ve metabolized it – writing every morning is part of who I am. Many days, the writing is just drivel. But on some days, there are flashes of insight, self discovery, problem solving, brainstorming, emotional venting. It’s a creative space for me and has added greater value to my life that I could have anticipated. I’m a daily writer for like. Thank you to Margaret Hamlin, my high school English teacher that started me journaling. Thank you to Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way, who got me started with daily writing. And thank you to Buster Benson for creating 750words.com.

More badges for accomplishments

Although the site is 750, it would be great to have more behaviour badges, especially the 10 day ones. Like challenging people to write over 1000 words for 10 days, over 2000 words for 10 days, 3000 words for 10 days and things like that.

Other behaviour related suggestions could be a badge for a 10 day streak of any of the mindset or other stats. Example “Thinker” badge for someone who is dominantly a thinker for 10 days or more, etc.

I like challenges personally, so any way that badges can inspire us to do more, to enjoy our process of writing and reflecting more would be awesome. I already really appreciate the structure you have given us for writing and reflection. Lots of gratitude!

Thanks.
Andrew

I thought I had become one of those self-motivated people who writes every day just for the sake of writing. Then I discovered new badges to earn! Who knew little badges could be so rewarding? Thanks Buster for giving me something new to strive for!

750words has helped me develop the habit of journaling daily. I have tried various times to start and maintain a daily writing habit but did not persist. Now with 750words I just passed my 100 day streak!

Yesterday, I hit 400,000 words. This still seems unreal (I laugh when I hit these milestones) even though this is now as much a part of me as brushing my teeth or riding my bike — and I skip doing those sometimes! It’s amazing what 750words has given me — inner peace, a nonjudgmental place to work through issues, a reasonable spot to be embarrassingly giddy, something to look to when I feel like I can never accomplish long-term goals. I can. And I know I can because I have this hilarious record and animal badges, and strangely, it means the world to me.
