The Good Patrons of 750 Words

A Note of Inspiration from Blaine Mooers

1 cup
badges for 50, 60, 75K words per month

One way to try to write more is to shoot for a monthly target, like 50K words. I track daily my cumulative word count in a bar chart that compares my progress to where I need to be to stay on track. I find the comparison to be highly motivating. I tend to try to surge ahead on the weekends to give myself a buffer if I should fall behind during the work week. On some weekend days, I have written more than 5,000 words. I have passed 50K words in eight of the past 11 months. A badge for reaching 50K words per month would help keep me motivated. Badges for reaching 60K and 75K words would provide additional motivation to press further.

However, I would caution that setting unrealistic goals will set up you for failure because you will become discouraged and give up when you have fallen too far behind. For example, I just crossed the 50K line this morning; I have 10,000 words to go to reach my original goal of 60,000 words in May. With only three days left and a lot of other chores to do more a big trip, I doubt that I will reach 60K.
