The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

More sophisticated total writing time. Now if I write in the morning and at night it suggests I have been writing for 8 hours rather than just 45 minutes total… Just a thought.

I just wanted to say how happy I am to be back on the site! I had to take a break for a few months but just signed back up. I got so much more accomplished with my writing when I used this site each morning. Thanks for creating a spot for me to get focused!

I started 750 on January 1 of this year as a commitment to myself. I have just passed 130,000 words, but more importantly for me, 90,000 of those words are now the rough draft of a completed novel. Because of 750 Words I now have the firm habit of writing every day and for the first time I have a completed novel. Who knows whether it will get published but that isn’t the most important point anyway. I am in the editing process and will look for an agent in a month or two but in the meanwhile 750 Words is going to help me complete the second novel in my mystery series. Thanks 750 Words. Keeping writing my friends.

many times, on days (nights, rather) like this i may not necessarily have something specific to write or work on but this practice of daily writing and to make 750 words/ 3 pages is something i really value and appreciate. i think its healthy and helpful in my discipline. or maybe its pointless, who knows. i guess the aim — the dream would be to write every day, for at least 750 words/ 3 pages, and have it be on the same thing. therefore producing a manuscript after x number of days or months. i got an idea for a novel so there’s a challenge. my problem is that i have multiple writing bursts/ideas/storms on any given day. some are continued threads from years, others from just days. so i want to write them all and theres a sense of urgency to it so i feel i must write them all simultaneously. the problem with this is one, losing steam, becoming ambivalent, and never committing.

so maybe if i can just commit to writing every day and for 750 words/ 3 pages then maybe after awhile i can commit to more.

Listen up. 750 Words has made me feel as if I can run circles around everyone, as if I can dodge and weave and dink and dunk and fly through a line of heavy defense. Then with all the inspired ambition this site has given me, I feel as if I can run these crazy legs for a through pass and win. And just to mention, I have the wind at my back. No, wait. I am the wind. I am a hurricane of hope and can plow through any big ugly that stands in my way and win with the power of words. I am the champion of everything! Thank you 750 Words.

I have just begun with 750 words, and am using it like a warm up routine before a long bicycle ride. I need to get the brain to keyboard synapses firing and the thoughts flowing again so I can do some fiction that I have been promising myself I would do for a long time. So far, I think it is having a positive effect.

I’m looking forward to writing many books, with 750 words helping push me from behind. At times my brain seems numb, but I do believe that many feel the same way and are able to push way beyond how they feel. Excited right now. Here’s to success, one cup at a time.

Writing daily has helped me reflect on my thoughts, feelings and actions in a medium that is safe, secured and fun. My entries usually start like ramblings but the ending often surprises me. Unexpected realisations creep up on you like a random discovery which you eventually accept as something you’ve always known all along. And it fuels one’s determination to change, to overcome challenges, strengthen new learnings and form new positive habits. For me specifically, the one benefit that I feel is most significant is a sense of anchored calmness. In a world that is becoming more frenzied, my oasis of calm seems to have grown wider and more consistent thanks to the daily writing habits on this site. To the good people who maintains this site and those who frequent it with their daily entries, thank you for being part of this journey. I hope to stick around for a lot longer this time. :)

I like the badges, but it seems like it only registered when I’ve done them once. It would be great if it could show me when I’ve hit the badges, or just when was the latest time that I hit a particular badge!

Clean screen

To be able to see only text and (perhaps a faded out) word count when I go full screen, with the text aligning vertically in the center all the time.
The other is to dominantly show the sentence being worked on. Any other sentence could be greyed out. This allows for better focus on writing.
I use iA Writer to write my text because I find that experience more enjoyable. Then I just cut and paste into 750 words to turn it in. These are the features that I like from it!

Ok, so here I am thinking about streaks. I think it would be cool to have a top 10 current streaks (or top 100, pending room, or whatever). It would be great to see how far the top of the tops have gone, and what the rest of us lowly pterodactyls should aspire for.

Starred entries

I try to write every day and sometimes something gets written that I find really surprises me and that I know I might want to revisit in the future. Sometimes this is a conclusion about my life, or it might be the thread of a short story, or an idea for an app.

Going back through the record to find something is currently very challenging. There is a rudimentary search feature but it doesn’t seem to be very effective and the only other option is to browse one of the monthly summary pages and go through it entry by entry.

If only there was a way to ‘Star’ a post and leave a little note so that you could revisit it in future.

I expect this feature would be very straightforward to develop and would improve the overall experience – and usefulness – of 750 words for everyone.

That’s why I think it is worth at least three cups of coffee!

The badges are super encouraging for me! Sometimes they’re the main reason I get out of bed on time so I can sit down and work on my writing goals. So to have more would be to have even more good things to work towards.

I almost cannot believe it. I have used the Cameron Artist’s Way technique for decades, filling thousands of journal pages, but the habit for electronic writing never took hold with me.

Until now.

I realized I have fully embraced the new habit when this morning I felt nervous until I sat at the keyboard. The nerves vanished as soon as I began typing on the blank page.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the very bottom of my heart. You’ve restored my confidence and my hope with this simple 750 word premise.

I’m an artist, and self-employed – my tasks are different every day which can be a bit chaotic mentally. Starting the day with 750 words helps me so much by allowing me more time to spend sorting out my priorities and getting rid of thoughts that are energy consuming. I’m fairly addicted to 750 words at this point : )

I’m a sucker for stats and I love the ones you guys have already included, but there’s always more we can do! Let’s see some more stats from reading comprehension levels (like: this was written in such a way that a 9th grader would have a hard time reading it). If we were to integrate with the ToneAnalyzer that IBM BlueMix has released, that would be awesome! But, regardless, thank you for this platform.

Writing my daily words helps me keep myself balanced. It’s a place to dump the negativity that sometimes fills my brain, a place to noodle around with ideas, a place to make plans and record memories. I’m so glad I found 750words!

This is an incredible site. It has made writing fun by showing all the graphs after each day of writing. It is encouraging, fun and inspiring to use 750 Words. When I was writing it helped to get me through my blocks. It has helped me to be willing to write without editing and be okay with it, then experience clarity and inspiration to write. I love this site. Thank you 750 Words! I love you…

Writing Projects

A possibility to write long projects integrated with daily words.
The user would create a project – title, target number of words, deadline (optional parameters)
then, after writing our daily 750 words we could directly copy all or part of it to the project file.
The project could be stored on 750words or, for instance, the text could be transfered through a link to google docs: the user would define a file or several files in google docs as linked to 750 words (e.g. in the “edit project” feature); and after each day of writing we could copy (for instance through a small button on the margin of the page or something) the entire daily text or part of it into the pre-defined (or one of several pre-defined) google docs file(s).

Let me know what you think about this proposal :-)
It would be very convenient for all of us here who write fiction with the use of your site. :-)

I have been using this site for just under 30 days now, achieved at 22 day streak before falling off due to drama. The most interesting thing about it? I found myself missing the time spent here. It’s almost sacred to me, in a strange way.

Even though I’ve been relatively haphazard about when it happens, making sure I write every single day fills some part of me that I can’t seem to touch otherwise. This space gives me the motivation to tap at the keyboard and helps me clear my mind enough that ideas flow. I have cysts all through my hands and even though The Artist’s Way recommends that pages be done EVERY MORNING and LONGHAND, I’ve found that doing them AT ALL is really what counts, and this site helps me do that.

I can only hope that as I heal more and build my career as a writer (because I’ve been published five times now and want to make it a full time career) that I’ll never let anything get in the way of this sacred time.

There’s something satisfying about round numbers. Today I achieved a 1200 day streak. No new badge; just the joy of it. I love this site. After earning all the badges, it is simply part of my life at this point. And I’m extremely grateful for that. Thank you again and again, Buster and Kellianne.

Accurate word count for Asian characters

I really enjoy 750words and have recommended it to a lot of my friends. The thing I would like to see for change is to have a more accurate word count for Asian characters. A lot of my friends and I are keeping a daily journal in both English and Chinese/Japanese/Korean. Unlike European languages, in Asian language writing, one character counts as one word. I found that when typing Asian characters in 750words, a long sentence, or sometime a paragraph is counted as one word. It would greatly encourage me to write more if this issue could be resolved! :)

This is a place where I go for secrets. For sudden inspiration. For manic production when I want to time myself.

I haven’t made daily writing a priority. Yet. For now, I just need this place that serves me in a way a physical journal or online blogs cannot. This has evolved in many ways since I’ve used this service and I’m sure it will continue to change as a resource as I require.

This is a place that serves many purposes.
Enjoy.

I love this site. I’ve been writing for a month, and this has become my daily morning routine. The site has certainly given me enough momentum to start the day with fresh ideas and leave behind the negativity that usually bothers me. I hope I can keep up this habit – I find it pretty cool to re-read my own entries after a month. I found a lot of interesting thoughts that I didn’t know I had.

I have been using 750 words for several years now but have only this year started to take my writing practice seriously. I love the simplicity of the site as I can just log in and get going. Most days I use it as a brain dump, clearing out the clutter with a view to kick-starting my creative impulses. When I begin writing I am intrigued as to which way my mind will take me and very often I will have at least one mini epiphany during the course of the words and I find the whole process fascinating. I can’t recommend 750 words enough!
