The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Dear 750 words, I am very grateful for your existence. Your existence helped me create a searchable data-dump from all my too-complicated days.

Unlike the many creative writers who use 750 words, I use it mainly to record things I want to preserve. Sometimes these are touching and lovable family moments. More often, but also valuable, I preserve emails and Twitter retweets and mail orders from Amazon, all mixed together.

At the end of each month, I download the month’s text and upload it to Evernote. This way, all the months (and now years!) of writing with you is completely searchable.

Warm best wishes to all my fellow-addicts of 750 words, no matter what way you are finding to use it.

By-the-day Labeling system

I use 750 for a few different things including writing fiction, a personal diary and writing lists. It would be nice to keep track of how I use the days later on, like a way to make the ‘X’ at the top of the page a different color so I can find it later.

May 2016 was my first challenge success. Looking back over 31 days of writing, most were mundane ramblings (although I always make my to-do list for the day), but five or six days produced surprisingly deep and insightful prose. Without committing to daily writing, these would never have happened.

These special days are the reason to write every day— you never know when they will happen.

I so look forward to writing everyday now and the badges are a fun incentive to keep going. I’m going for my first try at getting on the Wall of Awesomeness this month! Writing gives me a good perspective on life and helps me get out of my head and shed the monkey mind on “paper.”

More day goals! I’m hoping to pass 1k, 2k, and keep going. Or even just like 1 yr, 2 yrs, 3yrs, etcetera. Keep it fresh!

This is my 10th straight month of going for all thirty days and I’ve won the last 9. I’m so excited that I am in a place where writing isn’t like pulling teeth for me anymore. I’m at more than a hundred fifty thousand words for the year, and I’ve even upped my person goal to 1000 a day. This is awesome.

I’ve had two months in a row of writing daily—except that one pesky day. It’s been wonderful to have the habit of writing and to process my days through writing. Thank you, 750words!

The Turtle Badge

We have a badge called The Cheetah, for folks who can write their 750 words in less than 20 minutes. How about a badge called The Turtle for folks who take a bit longer to get their words out? There’s nothing wrong with being particular about what you write, so I think that should be rewarded also. :)

It would be nice to just speak and have the app type it. This could be more productive and then you can edit.

Monthly challenge

It would be great if when you were successful in the monthly challenge a page came up stating that you did it. I know I made it, but I can’t find any sort of recognition.
Thanks for a great initiative, it has changed my life.

I recently took two months off writing due to time constraint. I didn’t realize how vital writing had become to analyzing my life, finding patterns and my fiction practice. Thank you so much! <3

Now that I have received my 30 day badge (!!), I just love to see more badges added. Besides keeping my streak alive, those badges are encouraging :)

I can’t rave enough about this deceptively simple tool. 750 Words has given this working mom a space to develop writing projects that would otherwise sit for weeks! The secret? I can log in any time! Lunch breaks have never been more productive – I feel like I’m quickly growing into the devoted writer I’ve wanted to be, and never lose touch with my work. Thank you!!

After breaking my 300+ day streak, I find it very hard to get back into daily writing.

The same has happened before after breaking long strikes.

And I notice this so much in my daily life, I am so much more restless, irritable, discontent when not writing my daily 750 words! But I just forget about it.

I’ve just passed writing 100,000 words. I can’t believe it. This site is amazing. I’m not sure any of the words are worth reading but I have a feeling I’ll get to something that is. Thank you for this wonderful site. God bless you!

Month word count

Is there a way to calculate how much a person has written in a month? And store that information so that it can be looked back on in 6 months, or a year, or more? This may exist already, but I haven’t been able to find it, and it would sure be helpful.

This website has saved my bacon. It’s so easy for me to convince myself that it’s fine to skip a day, or two or three, or a week when I’m tired or busy. But I hate breaking a streak more than anything, so it keeps me going, keeps me coming back every day, even though I can barely keep my eyes open to type sometimes. And I always feel better for it.

The habit of writing Morning Pages has been one of the most fruitful practices I have ever begun and the discovery of this tool is priceless. Even though I was already enjoying writing every morning, I always felt a little inhibited about what I was putting on paper. I find that the benefit of this exercise is not as connected to the medium you use as it is to the freedom that comes from knowing you can spill all your inner feelings and crazy ramblings without fear that someday they will be read by others. At first I was disturbed by the negativity that seemed to pour out. I am by nature a fairly optimistic and positive person. But as the weeks have gone by things have taken a turn. I feel lighter and more hopeful and positive. This is great therapy! Thank you so much for this wonderful outlet you have provided.

With this site, I don’t need therapy. It’s all right at a key board when I have access to a computer or my iPhone. I type pretty well, in fact my typing skills have improved through my iPhone when I log on through that.
Stream of consciousness works for me. I wonder how much damage has been derailed because of sites like this where you can vent and just express what nobody else will listen to?

I’ve been doing research on honing my writing craft and came across an article that mentioned 750words. I’ve done the whole “morning pages” thing every now and then, but I’ve never felt motivated or inspired to keep up with them. What I really like about 750words is that it tells you exactly how many words you’ve written, and what I absolutely LOVE is that once you’re done writing, it gives you stats of what you’ve just written. I like finding out my mood, when I’m thinking about myself as opposed to a collective, what words I frequently use, etc.

I look forward to writing every day now!
