The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

It’s mornings like this one, where the conditions are just right, and I finally feel safe mentally and that I have enough space to come back to my words that I really appreciate it. When the stress takes me, it’s hard to see that I have always known that getting the words out of my head can probably help to make it an easier ride. I don’t always remember that as quickly, though. And so, on the randomly perfect morning when the stars align and I have enough willpower from what has been drained of me by my problems to sit down and face myself through writing my thoughts, I suddenly feel the sense of happiness, reality, and calm that I have been without for however long. Sometimes a few days. Sometimes a couple of weeks. I just know that once I come back to it, that I always feel good again and that taking time to say the things I have swimming in my head out loud to these pages leaves me with less to be ashamed of than I probably thought for the time just spent stressing out.

My name is Squeakypizza and I have adhd, major depression, and anxiety. I don’t tolerate stress well and it affects me easily. I enjoy writing almost, as much as, or more than 750 words to help manage how I’m feeling so that I can more easily remember that I’m not as terrible of a person as I tend to think I am and that life is a lot easier than I tend to make it out to be. I have infinite gratitude for this website’s existence. Thank you.

Over the years I’ve tried, on and off, doing morning pages. This works better for me. A little over two months in and already I can’t imagine missing a day. It’s like air and sunlight now. Not a luxury. A human necessity, which brings me closer to myself every day and reminds me of my place in the world. It also helps me write (duh). I’ve been able to make progress in my creative writing that wasn’t possible before discovering 750words. Thanks guys.

I started long ago but couldn’t find the focus and energy to write daily but over the years I seem to have found what I was looking for! This is now my safe haven of getting thoughts from head to ‘paper’ My daily 750+ words are like taking a daily supplement of vitamins but for my mind! Thank you so much! All the best to all you 750worders out there! Keep on writing!

750 Words has been a crucial part of my daily self-reflection and is a key part in growth as an individual. It helps me get my emotions out on paper where I can examine them critically. The badges were helpful in getting hooked into this habit. I hope to keep this streak up. Thank you guys for this website!

Two of the short stories I’ve written since starting 750 words have been published. On a 116 day streak now, I’ve found my writing has improved every day that I’ve spent here. I usually use it more as a mind-dump than a motivator to work on fiction, but it’s precisely that mind-dump that allows me to work on said fiction when I’m done. With all of this world’s worries left on the page, I can dive headfirst into the worlds I’m crafting in my mind, with no hesitation or distractions from stray thoughts. It really is amazing. Plus, this site introduced me to The Artist’s Way, which I completed three weeks ago and really got my creative juices pumping. I approach everything in totally new ways, and I can’t wait to report to the page every day before I start my work. Thank you Kelianne and Buster, for your wonderful site, the badges that encourage me never to miss a day, and the introduction to the book that saved my life and started my career.

Personal challenge

This site is already lovely, and it’s possible someone else has already suggest this. But it would be cool if, in addition to the standard 750-word goal, we could set personal challenges. So, for example, if I needed extra motivation to hit a deadline for, say, a conference paper, then I could set a one-week goal of 1500 words per day (or whatever). In addition to checking off the 750-word goal, the bottom corner of the screen could also display my progress to the personal challenge.

Twenty one days ago the island I live on (pop 900) lost internet. I went from being a pterodactyl to an egg through no fault of my own.
Last time I broke a streak the disappointment stopped me writing for months. This time (as soon as internet was restored) I started right back again.
I think I’ve learned something.
I love the badges. The community. But at the end of the day – its all about the writing.
Thank you Kellianne and Buster.

In many ways. Here’s a few which are important to me.

I am more organized as I list things I have to do – especially paperwork.

I read, think and write about spiritual matters I haven’t explored before.

I write more, including poetry and meditations.

Thank you.

Post Sharing

I’d love to see an option where we could choose to share our writings, or specific writings with friends or people we follow/following us. Nothing required, I know people enjoy the anonymity here…but the option of get feedback or just sharing our thoughts. What do you all think?

Thank you for helping me start a new morning ritual writing practice. Despite not being a writer or having any prolific insights that should be read by any human being, I’ve been enjoying the process. Perhaps one day something will come it!

offline writing

I’m often away from internet for 1-5 days in a row. I’d like to be able to keep writing (and keep my streak going) during those days.

Option 1 (technically easier): User requests an offline block in advance (to prevent ex post facto abuse), say of 3 days. Then the day after that block, the user uploads or copy-pastes the text they wrote offline.

Option 2: Build an offline web app that extends the site to this use case.

By the way, I’m happy to help build these things! I’d happily trade code for membership.

Improve the homepage

Honestly, the current 750words site is just incredibly bland and simple. It feels like it was built by somebody with very little HTML experience, and whether or not that’s the case, more content and design could make the site more visually, if not functionally appealing. May I suggest using Google’s Material Design guidelines, which not only look great on any device but also open the door for plenty of color, animations and style; all things this website needs imo

I am just so very motivated by badges. Can we re-earn badges if we’ve had them longer than a year, maybe? Even something that small will be enough to give me a little kick in the pants.

A friend of mine announced in January that she had started writing daily in 750 words. At first it did not appeal to me. I had my journals, after all. I could just write in there.

As time passed, she continued to talk about 750 words and the motivation she was getting from it. So, after nearly two months, I gave it a try. At first I was writing about whatever came to mind. And over time I found that I rarely was at a loss for words. Over time, I found that I liked the encouragement given by badges and a report on the number of words written. And then I began committing to the monthly challenges.

I started on March 18th, 2015 and I have now written over 130,000 words here. I tried recently to move my writing to the end of the day, but that did not work out so well. Because I have found that I use 750 words as my morning brain dump and planning session. I’m very much hooked on 750 words now.

I love 750 words. This site has helped motivate me to write daily, thereby overcoming a major writer’s block. I would love to see more text analysis, particularly on a monthly basis. This would help me to identify major themes happening in my writing.

Emphasis

These are the usual bold, italic, underline, highlight.

Adding this would be great to help keep note when reflecting after having written it. This then allows the reader to find certain things whenever they go through their old entries instead of just seeing plain text. So far I’ve been compensating by using capital letters to grab my attention. One can only “scream” for so long.

100 days in a row. It’s huge result for me at the moment but also I understand that the same time it’s just a small step towards my bigger goal. I’ve started my 100 days streak several times but missed a day couple of times. Now I’m on fire! :)
Thanks for great service! Keep writing!

Something to make it easier to use when travelling or unable to get to a computer. The mobile site is tough to use, and you have to log in if you take a break or get distracted. Would love something easy, pretty, and inspirational.
