The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our son Niko, and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

750 Words has unleashed a fury! I just completed my first month’s challenge and have been beavering away at my writing here and started a writing class, joined a writing group and have a book project in mind. This from a reluctant, stymied writer who could rarely come up with a topic. It is as though 750 Words blew away the cobwebs and set the creative juices flowing. It is just what was needed. Hats off to B&K and all of you who support this site..

750 Words has always been a component of peaks in my productivity as a writer. I first found it when I was feeling extremely low, and my first ever time writing here started a 106,668 word novel. Later, I stopped writing, and that sucked. But now I’m novelling and regularly writing in 750 Words again, and life is definitely much better this way.

I just finished the thirty day challenge and so I am donating another $5 because I appreciate that it gave me the incentive to get my words in every day!!! I am farther on my novel that I would have been had I not had 750 Words challenge to keep me honest about writing at least 750 words a day. Thank you!!!!

I began this as an experiment. I was in a pretty dark place and thought that it might help me clear my head every morning. I didn’t expect it to change my life, or to clear away the real things I was dealing with every day but, just the chance of beginning my day with a head empty of angry muck was a thing worth trying. And lo! 39 days later, I feel cleaner and clearer than I have in a long, long time. Morning Pages in a notebook would not have worked for me but this..this is perfect.

I am so grateful for this site. I’ve gone well over 500 days now, and am wondering if someday there will be a special badge for, say, 750 entries of 750… :)

I am most grateful for being able to schedule days off, especially on days when I am traveling 14-16 hours at a time. Thank you for this feature!

Oh no! I have broken my streak, after 507 days in a row! And the reason…I was so busy writing! Can you believe it? 750 words has been a tremendous help for me in keeping my writing regular, I’m immensely thankful!

Increase the daily 5,000 word limit

e.g. Give us a monthly word limit of [150,000] (or more) instead of a daily one of [5,000]…

Today I have reached 480 days in a row. I can’t believe that I have only 20 days left and I will have reached the final badge listed. Just seeing the number 480 left me a bit numb. How to celebrate?

I have started and left 750words so many times, just because I wasn’t sure if it was worth the time. Now I can’t imagine living without the daily clarity and space the practice gives me. I have five small children, and they often make it hard for me to find time to “hear myself think.” Writing my pages both calms me down and motivates me to get going with all the big plans I make for myself that sometimes get shoved aside. I love it! Thank you!

It’s funny, I’d been away from 750words.com since 2011. When I signed back in a few days ago and saw that I had a free “lifetime members” because I’d signed up in the early days, that made me feel “special” and connected to this site – and to my writing. Which prompted me to buy a few cups of patronage. That is the best Jedi mind trick anyone’s ever exacted over me and I am happy to have fallen “victim”. :-) Now off to write today’s 750 words.
Thank you for creating and maintaining this site!

Today I earned my 365 days Pegasus! I started writing my words when I moved to a new city/country/continent/hemisphere. This has been a great way to process all the new experiences that come with starting a new life. Thanks for existing, 750words.com! Now on to earn my Space Bird!

Second Chance

I have been on nights so my days are all mixed up and as a result, by accident, I missed a day (yesterday.)Excuses I know. What would be cool is a feature where you could use a patronage cup to buy back a day – if you miss a day, you get the chance to buy it back. You should only get one per month and there should only be a certain window where you can buy it back (otherwise it defeats the overall purpose of the challenge,) but I could really do with something like this right now. :)

More badges for accomplishments

The badges help gameify something all writers struggle with at some point – writing! I really like the badges as encouragement but it would be really nice to have more available when you hit certain milestones – at the moment the gap between 30 days and the next badge is quite big! It’s easy to lose heart when things seem a long way away. Just like writing a book, it’s worthwhile having the next milestone in sight to keep you going. Great job with the site though Buster!

I would like to thank the people behind 750, for I have been diligently writing daily, and I continue to do so. For now I can continue along, reaching those hard earned badges I love to try to unlock. Thank you again.

Schedule Time Off Explanation

Thanks for making this site Buster! I just passed the one million word mark, I would never have guessed I could write that much when I started, but it has been 4 years now and the day doesn’t feel like it started until the 750 words are done. In a good way!

A few months ago, I wrote that my mom was very sick. She died of bladder cancer on Feb. 12. She knew I used this site and when I had my best streak going, over a hundred days, she was the one who saved it for me one night. It was a little after 11 p.m. and she was going to bed. She said, “did you write your words?” I had totally forgotten. We had been having a nice evening, watching some TV and laughing at this and that. That was last November and she was still doing all right, as far as being mobile, able to engage, etc. But my streak broke last December 18, when she got very sick again, was admitted to the hospital, and I had to leave work and travel a couple of hours to be with her. The most I’ve been able to keep going since then is about 30 days and that’s with taking scheduled days off. I always think of that night when she saved my streak. She knew it was important to me. Maybe one day I’ll get 100 days again. Note of inspiration: I don’t know. I was just thinking of how I’m now on the wall of shame because I failed the April challenge. But here I am, back, and writing. Mom would want me to do that.

I am 18 and married, with a 18 month old child… My life has been pretty tough these past few years, and money is tight… However 750 words has helped me more than anyone could possibly fathom, it has given me a place to get all of the mess going on in my life out of my head. After a few days I could already feel the tension and stress leaving me. I have used this website as a place where I can complain and rant about everything in my life I hate, so that when I click that “Save and Submit” button, it all seems to disappear, and everything I was angry about just vanished. Although I have only been using 750 words for a month, I have already seen massive benefits from it, far more than I ever expected….
Thank You,
Bailey Lentz

I’m on day 503 now. I’ve been so determined to keep it going. I never thought I could do it but this site has given me hope.
Last night the internet was out at my house. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get it to connect and struggled with it for hours. I really needed to go to bed and get some sleep because I had to get up early for work. And the day was fast ticking down. I could keep struggling with my internet, or find another place to connect, which is what I did. I threw my laptop into my backpack and ran to my work place which has free wifi and stood outside of the closed building to complete my words. No, I literally ran. I’m not in the best of space, but I was completely determined (and probably thought to be crazy by my roommate). Glad there wasn’t too many people out cause I bet I might have looked strange being on my laptop in the employee parking lot. xD Even though I ended up getting only a couple hours of sleep, I still feel energetic and awake. I’m so glad that I didn’t break my streak. May all this determination leak to other aspects of my life.

I just reached Spacebird status, which feels like a huge feat. At least 750 words written every day for 500 days straight. I feel proud of myself for being able to maintain such a productive habit and hope I can keep up the streak for much longer still!

I have been using this site since October of 2011 to help me clear my mind, organize my thoughts, and work through the though stuff life throws at me, and it has been invaluable. To know that there is a safe, secure, and distraction-free place I can come to write has been a great source of comfort for me over the years, and I know it will continue to be. Thanks, Buster, for creating this place.

Writing every day—896 days since I joined, 887 daily pages written, 864-day streak now—this site is part of the core of my day and my writing. But—the ability to schedule time off suddenly disappeared. I could lose it all by one slip….yes, I love the site and the writing, but the structure of my streak keeps me on track. Please let me schedule time off again!!!
