The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Graphics?

I so appreciate this site! One thing I find myself wishing I could do is inserting a graphic that caught my eye or meant something to me on that day. I understand this is about the written word – but I link images and words all the time in my own heard and would love to get them recorded together. Much thanks for the site – it’s a wonderful platform for keeping myself motivated to write!

Allow for automatic tracking in different time zones

I live in Europe and I noticed that when I’m writing my statistics are shown in Pacific Time Zone. I can edit this in my settings, but because I travel regularly it would be so much easier if the site recognized the timezone of my IP address so that I didn’t have to update it each time. This would help me track the consistency of the timing of my writing or to allow me to acquire time based badges regardless of the time zone (especially since I know I’m likely to forget to update my time zone).

I can’t thank 750 words enough for keeping me on track with writing every day. I am about to hit 700 days in a row, and from then almost straight 2 years. I hit 500,000 words a few weeks ago, a feat I had seen but never thought I would hit myself. It’s the easiest, most useful and fun way of writing morning pages I’ve ever seen, and I don’t see any signs of slowing now. I feel more creative, more open, more lucid. Conversely, the last time I missed a day I almost drove someone crazy giving them all my brain dump in a car to the point where he pulled me over so we could use Starbucks wifi to get the words down instead of spoken. 5 dollars a month is nothing in comparison to what 750 words provides for me. I’m a writer who’s felt blocked for years and now I am certain that when I go back and read through these archived pages with “soft and humorous eyes” I will find my book in here when I am ready. Thank you so much.

750 Words serves as my personal trainer for writing. A nudge, a reminder, a push to sit and fill the blank screen with 750 words. Sometimes I keep going past the limit and other times I am watching the word count anxious to meet my goal but either way, the sense of accomplishment is there for me. Accountability and discipline paired with mind-clearing are valuable side effects of this simple yet effective program. I was introduced to this website through a speaker at Writefest in Houston and I am so thankful for its existence.

Today I earned the Phoenix Badge for writing 100 days in a row. This is the first time I’ve ever written 100 days in a row and I am extremely motivated to continue. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am so grateful.

I have never been good with a schedule. 750 words has helped me in becoming consistent and serious about my writing. In all honesty, it has helped me believe in myself as a writer. This is a wonderful project. Much thanks to you, Buster and Kellianne.

"You are here" marker on day boxes

This is SUPER tiny, but I would really appreciate anything that could mark where I am in that row of boxes without having to count days from the left when I’m going through them. If not that, then “next day” and “previous day” buttons in addition to the existing “next month” and “previous month” buttons would be awesome. ♥

All personal data in one menu

Hi Buster & Kellianne,
Ideal world: all ‘my’ data – my cups of patronage, daily writing, totals, badges, downloads, followers, followings, account settings – all on one menu, with more user-friendly titles. Sadly, I keep losing my cups of patronage location, so find it harder to write you nice notes like this for your EPIC website (which I love and adore daily) ;-D

I want to thank Kellianne for once again restoring my streak! I have no idea how I only wrote 150 words and didn’t come back to finish but she filled in the missing day and now I have an almost 1400-day streak!

I love the intentionality with which Buster and Kellianne designed and run this site. Yes, I could say that badges are silly and that I am intrinsically motivated. But honestly, there is a great extrinsic push with getting “rewards” for doing something that often feels thankless. There is a certain level of pride I get when I see a month full of green Xs. Yes, I write everyday because I have to, but I get that extra incentive to write even when I might feel I don’t want to because I also know that I have a record to maintain or a badge to earn. Sometimes those “silly” things are the tipping point in my choosing to engage in my craft on a day when I really just don’t want to put words down. And often, once I start writing, the words begin to come and 750 words then turns into a productive day of writing. Thank you.

the red-letter realization is that I’ve written over a million words since I started on this site. I was someone for whom a high school or college essay threw me into despair and procrastination. I could never think what to say. Look at me now! I respond well to the badges although it’s been a while since I’ve earned one. I pretty much sit down every morning and either free write or generate a couple of pages of memoir, perhaps a poem or an abecedarian bit. I tell every writer I meet about it. Grateful kudos to Kellianne and Buster for 750 Words.

Ability to turn off word counter

Hi! Sometimes I am writing and keep looking at the counter, especially on hard days. It is pretty distracting. It would be great to be able to turn it off, and just write away only to be suddenly notified I reached my 750 words. Not more counting word by word just to make the number go up… Would that be possible?

I’ve used 750words on and off for about four years now. I’ve gone long stretches without using it, and I always regret letting it go that long when I get back into it. Now that my life has settled down a bit, I can see 750words taking a prominent role in my routine. It takes me about 100-150 words to get the superficial thoughts out, and then after that, I really start to dig deep and get at the things that are bothering me. I come out the other side happier, more confident, and feeling better about my life. And I affirm it each day I write my words!

(The badges are definitely motivating, though, too)

As a follower of Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, 750Words is a great fit. I started today! I’m excited to join ya’ll.

I’ve been writing my three pages long hand for the past year and find it challenging to then use the content in some of my blogs. So this will be a nice change.

Thanks for re-energizing my writing.

After 902 straight days of writing, I’m headed for Madagascar for 3 weeks (750 words only allows a 10-day break) with no Wi-Fi access so I’ve decided to shift habits and see if I can get writing to stick via pen and paper again. If it doesn’t work, believe me, I’ll be back, as this has been a great solution for me but in a 3rd world country without computers, 750words will no longer be available. Great site, great badges, I only wish there were more!

I will hit 700 days this month, a weird thing for me. I am not much for consistency, so the fact that I have spent 700 days doing something is a huge accomplishment. Through depression, illness, stress I never thought possible I’ve continued to come back and I am eternally grateful for this haven to return to.

Broke my streak for the second time, after 199 days. Writing these entries no longer does for me what it used to and I’d hate to continue just for a silly badge, but this was a fantastic place for me to dump and organize my thoughts during a rather stressful period. Gonna take a break for now, but I really appreciate this resource being available for me when I needed it.
