The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Helpful and custom links

Dear Kellianne,

I’d like to propose a feature, which I think will work pretty well for me.

I’ll start with the reasoning: I often need quick links, while I’m typing my words. Would that be Markdown syntax, or something else, I need these. Currently, I’m using Chrome’s bookmarks, or search each time for the stuff I need. I believe it’ll be very helpful for me if the following is implemented:

1. Put “Markdown syntax” reference in the HELP menu. This would be rather easy, I guess. It’ll be great, if it could open a Markdown syntax page within 750words, preferably with target=“_blank”. Or you could use (this)[https://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax], for example. In any case, it’ll be very useful.

2. Implement possibility to enter up to 20 custom URLs in our profile. If these are entered, after the “XXXX MEMBERS” menu you could put another one, which will be “MY LINKS”. On hover over it, the menu with the links will appear. Clicking on the link will open it with target=“_blank”. This way I can populate the list in the way I want. And the links could be entered in a multi-line text box, each link on a separate row. I think this will be the easiest and will provide flexibility for quickly entering and modifying them, without much coding.

I guess this is it, for now.

But most important, keep up the good work with this site!

When I started writing again — three years ago now! — 750 Words was invaluable to me. I began a streak that lasted almost a year (Life Happens, as we all know), and since then there have been months where there are more blank days than days with writing. If I get discouraged, or feel that the block might be Forever, I only needed to look into my archives to know that I can break free of it.

The point of 750Words is to build a rhythm, a habit — when life happens, though, that habit sometimes needs to take second place. I encourage everyone who has broken a streak to not give up! There’s a freeing feeling of seeing those blank little rectangles turn from slashes into X’s again, just like the first time. And if it happens again (and it might!) — you can do it. Just take a look at how many days you’ve written, your longest streak, your averages… you can do amazing things.

Use this awesome site to build your habit — but be kind to yourself, too. If you miss a day and break your streak, don’t despair. You’ve done this before — you can do it again. xoxo

A colleague told me about 750words.com many years ago at the time I was learning about the benefits of daily free writing. It has been such a useful tool for me to write, create a writing habit and have streaks of daily writing that have been gathered up into much larger documents and small books. Thank you for making it possible for us.

Just passed 3.5 million Words on this site tonight. So hard to believe, but as I continue my streak, the Words just pile up. I’m incredibly grateful to Buster and Kellianne for this place to converse with myself and the world. It has become more than a practice—it’s my way of life. I take time each day to be with myself in this way—all because of the early on badges that kept me going. Yes, I’d like a badge for 2000 days, which will come up in a bit, but even without it I’ll keep writing. It’s just what I do now. Thank you, also, to all of you who join me in this space. We’re a special tribe, And, though I don’t know you personally, I’m grateful for your company. I wish continued writing for all of us.

The process of writing only truly starts after the first draft is completed. It is the act of correction, of modification towards a better transfer of the core’s message and intent which gives true character to the text… Or so says some writing specialist on the internet.

Truly, I wouldn’t know.

However, as all hard workout session needs an equally relaxing stretching session;

750 words’ appeal to spontaneous writing stretches our minds after(or before) hard writing sessions.

This membership was a gift from a much valued and loved mentor upon my graduation from university. I did err a bit until now, but I always came back here in times of inner turmoil.

Dear Kellianne & Buster,

I’d like to extend my thanks to you for making this site what it is. I’ve just completed a very challenging education. Ironically, on the same day I broke also my 270 days streak :). But this is not that important.

What’s more important is that you inspire me to write every day. I hope I will be able to return back what I lost and to actually hit at least 365 days badge a year from now!

Thank you for doing what you’re doing. I’ve no additional “feature requests”, but I see the community does pretty well with those :).

I wish you both lots of fun and success, to you and your kind family, and also to your great community service, which 750words actually is.

I have been attending DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) class for four months. I just found out about this site from one of my Facebook friends and decided to try it out. Such a simple concept, yet I can write about whatever I am feeling or thinking mindfully and without judgment – both important parts of the DBT program. I’m only five days in and I can tell that this is going to be so helpful. I love being able to earn badges and participate in the monthly challenges. Thank you 750Words!

Thanks 750Words. I love you.

Being unafraid to fully explore my thoughts and emotions has allowed me to come out the other side of hardship and pain. It feels right to leave this habit in my past as I look to the future.

I turned to this site when I had nowhere else to turn. Every single time. I was in a perpetual state of confusion while I was here. But I think that confusion has left me. I feel certain now. I don’t know what’s to come, but I am no longer lost.

I don’t have all the answers, but I have less questions.

So, thank you.

I’ve finally managed to not only write for a full month once again, but hit 50,000 words in one month. I’m really proud of myself because since joining I’ve been super off and on and inconsistent about writing, so this is a big deal to me.

That’s what I love about 750 words: it forces you to truly commit to daily writing via the constant nagging and the shiny badges. Having the lofty goal of 50,000 words I think is what did it for my motivation. The shiny new badge was too tempting to give up.

My identity has always been aspirational. “I could write, I think.” or “This year I will deliberately write more.” …all of these things falling through the cracks or letting life get in the way.

I found 750 words by chance and hope that I can be nudged along to actually make a habit out of writing. I would like to be able to ingrain this into my daily routine and have added this page to my “auto-open” so that I will see it every time I open my browser. Hopefully, I can survive through the first monthly challenge and not have to see my name on the wall of shame.

Thank you for providing this platform!!

Writing on 750 Words helps clear out the cotton balls in my brain. I tried to write in a journal but it just wasn’t as fun or enticing, so I am back on the computer and ready to eek out 750 a day!

Top 10 Streaks

Here’s a cool idea: I would like to see the top 10 streaks the site has accumulated. I am 90 away from that flying squirrel badge, but I know this is just the beginning. I would like to see how far folks have made it. I think having the top 10 streaks on the front page would be cool.
