The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Today I took the leap and transitioned to the new 750 word site after over 7 years on this one, but I just couldn’t leave here without giving a shout out to Kellianne with so much thanks for all the times that she fixed broken streaks and otherwise helped me – always with grace and kindness. It has meant so much to me to have this place, and this community, to share the process of expressing thoughts, stretching creative muscles, and getting out my ruminations someplace safe. Hope to see you all on the other side!

Entering historical journal entries

I have a bunch of historical journal entries that I would love to load into this tool.

They would not count towards achievements but would be included in the stats like mood analysis and things like that.

I want to see all my journal entries in one place, and to understand my shifts over time.

Daily writing is deeply personal; the Web can be an invasive place. A secure server would enable all users to mind-dump candidly and without filters.

I was just going through all my passwords and this site came up. I’ve really been missing it lately. I exported my notes when you “closed,” but nothing replaced the peace I found while dumping my thoughts on this site. I happened to click it just out of curiosity and HERE YOU ARE! You just made my day in ways I can’t begin to explain! I am so relieved and encouraged to be back. I noticed on Twitter you’re working on a new version of the site. Whatever you do, just don’t take it down again!

Mobile-friendly website

I sometimes compose my words in the Notes app on my iPhone using voice recognition while I’m taking a walk. I then select all then copy and paste.

The problem I’ve had is that there doesn’t appear to be a way to trigger a “Force Save” like I can on my iPad by using Command-S. I’ve tried lots of different tricks. Sometimes it appears that the words have registered and been counted but they haven’t actually be “saved”. In a few cases, I’ve lost what I put in which impacted my continuous streak of writing.

In the past, I thought perhaps I could use voice-recognition directly into the 750words.com site from my iPhone. In some of those cases, I lost my text/writing altogether. That’s why I at least use the Notes app to hold my writing so if inputting it into 750words.com doesn’t take, then I’ll still have a copy.

Perhaps there could be a “Save Now” button that appears on mobile devices.

In this past year, I have continued to added experiences to my life, that fill my cup. These things, like 750words, have asked me to show up with consistency, like my work-outs, with discipline, like my reading, with new thoughts and ideas, and in all, contributing to this time in life when isolation has had to become a positive place generating life, health, healing and growth. I Thank this website, for being here.

I heard about it through Mel Robbins, who has also continued through her writing and speaking, to add to my life with tools that help me care for me, help me to believe in me, and help me to put me first. Writing is the first thing I do consistently with great joy every single day. Rain or Shine, on good days and bad, I can count on this space, to be a place where a gathering of a like minded collective is happening virtually. On most days my mood shifts for the good if it didn’t start out that way.

Thank you Sherry

I’ve journalled badly all my life. 750words provides a nice simple interface that stays out of the way and the right encouragement level that you can get it done for months at a time… An off-line mode would be nice too for those times I’m off-grid but that can wait.

Morning Pages help me make better decisions. When I can get all the things swirling around in my brain on to “paper,” it helps me make better decisions about my day and whatever is bothering me. I have done morning pages for years, but go through phases. When I’m consistent about my writing though, my life is brighter and makes more sense. Morning pages are a vital part of my self care!

I recently started trying out the new v2 750words website (new.750words.com) and it looks slick and awesome! Thanks, Buster & Kellianne. But I wanted to write this note especially to thank Kellianne for helping me with the billions of support requests I’ve been sending for the new version. Every time some little glitch happens, she is there to fix the problem and allay my fears. I’m sure I’m not the only one, and I’m sure it’s a lot of work. So I wanted to write a note to say, “Thank you, Kellianne!”

Hello, all my brave, inquisitive, and lovely fellow writers…

This is my farewell note of sorts. I’m in the process of transitioning over to our shiny new online home – but things are run a little differently there, and I suddenly realized how hollow I’d feel if I just left all of my cups to languish over here on the original site. I was always in the habit of hoarding them to pour out in a burst of celebration and euphoria when I reached a new badge or milestone (my last one being the Early Morning Rooster far too many months ago). But now I just want to use them to enjoy one last moment of reflection and camaraderie here where it all began.

I’ve been showing up to spill my ink since someone mentioned 750 Words in passing during NaNoWriMo of 2015, and I used it as a tool to help me get through November. By the end of the month, it was an ingrained habit. I knew I didn’t want to give up my daily words, so I joined without any hesitation. That feels like an eternity ago now, but I know there are many of you who have been at this much, much longer than me. A HUGE debt of gratitude to all the writers who have left so many amazing Notes of Inspiration since I’ve started here! I can’t tell you how much I look up to all of you Flying Squirrels and Great Gryphons; I don’t know how you do it! I have yet to capture the Pterodactyl, and sometimes I despair that I ever will get further than the Phoenix…but seeing all of your accomplishments leaves me with a little hope that I can make it, too. SOMEDAY. YOU are what I aspire my writing practice to be. So, thank you, genuinely.

Thank you most of all to Buster and Kellianne for creating this little haven for us and keeping it running smoothly even when the rest of the world seems to be falling apart at the seams. I’ve filled my blank pages with fan fiction, original work, character interviews, NaNo projects, Etsy messages and letters to friends, rants, dreams and plans for my future…and most recently the character letters I began writing for others during the pandemic. I don’t think I’d have had the courage to take that somewhat scary leap if it hadn’t been for my hours spent here. (Now that I think about it, I credit a LOT of my personal growth in the last few years to showing up here consistently, to say nothing of my growth as a writer.)

So when that notice about a “new and improved” site popped up a little while ago (with the reassurance that we could transition whenever we were fully ready) I felt a surge of denial and foreboding. I didn’t particularly WANT new and pretty and shiny. I didn’t WANT to pioneer my way into the grand new adventure of Version 2. 750 Words IS MY HOME, blast it, and I had NO wish whatsoever to see it tinkered with or “upgraded”. Leave the bookshelves and the rugs and the furniture alone! I wanted it kept exactly the way it had always been: comfortable, steadfast, and predictable. I created my new account mostly to see what the fuss was about, prepared to white-knuckle and molar-grind my way through the whole dreaded experience. Honestly, though, guys…it’s not so bad! Different, for sure. A bit of a shock to the senses when you’re so used to the familiarity of this version – especially the first week. But there are some wicked cool new badges to aspire to for those of you who are badge motivated like me. There are streak freezes and confetti showers every day! (That last one will make sense when you switch, I promise.) All to say that it’s worth tamping down your trepidation if that’s where you’re at right now. It still may be bittersweet for a while…it very much is for me. But I’m proud to be an early adopter.

Heard a quote this morning that really resonated with my writing habit and what I want it to look like one day: “You become what you practice being.” I’ve resolved that I’m using Version 2 for a fresh start, and I plan to practice being a writer every day for years to come. Thank YOU for being such a supportive, nourishing community in which to do that, everyone. Even though we don’t necessarily converse or message one another in the traditional way, it’s so reassuring just to know we’re in this thing together. Clacking away at our keyboards in solidarity with each other every day.

I hope to see you all on the other side when you’re ready! Look for Butterfly-In-The-Storm. Until we meet again… <3 <3 <3 <3

Different levels of monthly donation

If this feature already exists, that’s great! However, I have tried to find a way to increase my monthly membership giving (and have a higher amount come out every month than currently does) and I can’t find how to do this. I know I can make a one-time donation, but it would be cool if those of us who are able could contribute monthly at higher levels and automate that contribution. Thanks for your consideration!

I came across this site after six months of doing morning pages the old fashioned way. I have been pleasantly surprised by how many words I have written. I kind of aspire to a book but didn’t think I could write enough. This site has proven otherwise. The quality can only improve with practice so thank you. I have migrated to v2 and signed up for a year. I am hooked.

750 words has been a game changer, i am so pleased I found the site. I have recently given up being a fixed hours, out of the house employee, to go 100% freelance and work from home. Creating a new work structure has been harder than I expected, what with being a bit lazy and not good in the mornings. The commitment of writing 750 words first thing each day sets me up for steady progress. It stops my inner critic getting the upper hand before I’ve even begun.
I also love all the pretty badges so please keep making new ones of those.
thank you for all you do and hi to all my fellow writers. Never though I would call myself that.

Fonts for new version

I haven’t upgraded to the new beta version yet. I’m not generally an early adopter in the tech arena. I normally let Apple work out their kinks on millions of others before leaping in (unless it’s a security issue). I figure most problems eventually rise to the surface.

My main feature request involves the font. Our current font has a vaguely hand-written sensibility which is fine as far as it goes. The most significant issues that have been noted by many over time relates to the interpretation of special characters.

Suggestion #1: Standard keyboard special characters such as [ ( , ; : ‘ “ ? / ! @ # $ % ^ & * ~ ` _ – + = | | { } ) ] that are nearly universal on computer keyboards should be accommodated and accurately transcribed and recorded. I’m always somewhat surprised and annoyed when using an apostrophe is translated into a code.

Suggestion #2: I love to use additional characters which usually require a combination of keystrokes. My favorites are bullet points • (Mac OS Option 8) and long dash –– (Mac OS Option _). Those would be a bonus to those suggested under #1 which I think are a top priority.

Suggestion #3: Choice of fonts. Allowing users to select their fonts seems like a relatively easy upgrade opportunity. Some users might be so in love with using a particular font while they type and in their subsequent analytical summary that they might be willing to pay some extra amount per month to have that option. I’m thinking you pick just a handful of fonts that offers particular formal aesthetics like Helvetica, Times New Roman, Gill Sans, Courier, etc. I’m not suggesting offering dozens of font choices. Rather, I think five or six choices would be wonderful to have. I do realize that getting all of them to operate correctly in connection with their special characters could pose a knotty problem. So choosing the particular fonts that offer the most interoperability and consistency of interpretation might have to take precedence over the purity of aesthetic choices.

Thank you, Buster and Kellianne for making all of this possible! We love you more than we can adequately express.

So good to get back into daily writing with a prompt from 750 Words. I love that it’s a community and we can see that others are working when we are. There’s something motivating about that for me. I also love seeing the stats of what I’ve written—fascinating to see trends and moods! Happy to be a member again.

What an amazing way to start the year – to complete a monthly challenge.
I never would have thought that committing to writing daily would feel like such an achievement.
I highly recommend making the decision and just write. Every day.
It will help you find answers to your questions, clear your head of mental debris, give you an outlet to share your thoughts when you don’t want to share them with anyone else. It’s the ultimate in therapy.

I learned about this site by watching Mel Robbins motivational talks. It turns out that she has utilized this site as an inspirational tool to practice her writing skills and vent. I have been flirting with the idea of writing for a while now but mostly as an outlet. I had to try it. My first night writing I only reached a mere 189 words, but it was the start I needed. My second night, 932 words! I unloaded! Now that I needed! For now I use it as a personal outlet, but I’m spawning ideas for stories and hopefully to write a book at some point. And upon that second night and 932 words later, I became a member. You only get better by writing…whatever. Just writing. My thanks to the creators of this site. I don’t know of anything else out there like it and at this point I would not bother to look. On that note, write on my friends…write on!
