The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Percentage of days written

having two stats: one that is a streak
and a new one that is the percentage of days written. It would start from the time you started writing that year (say you sign up in April it would be the percentage of days written from that day). Streaks are awesome but sometimes life happens and it seems like a percentage would be really encouraging. maybe you missed two days but you still wrote 98% of the time, even if the streak was broken…

I am so glad I found this site! For the first time in my life, I am building a consisted writing habit and it’s made a big difference in my life. I feel like I am getting to know myself better and clarifying my goals and what I want.

Habit and Mood Tracker

It would be great, if writers could manually track their daily habits (ex.: walked to work yes/no) and moods (ex.: choose from a list of moods). The results could be displayed in colourful graphs. Coming from someone who doesn’t write in english and can’t use the metadata tool.

This site has done more for me than I ever would have thought possible. It has given me words when I needed them… inspired my creativity in both my art and writing… given me a safe place to get all of my thoughts together and a springboard for new ideas. It has, in effect, been both a friend and a counselor, listening to the inner workings of my mind during my Mother’s dementia and I want to thank the architects of this site for this life-saving place.

I appreciate the fun features, and I appreciate the simplicity. I appreciate the mission as being related to The Artist’s Way and all the very good reasons that 750 is the magic number. In short I believe this site it just about perfect the way it is, it strikes the right balance between helping build a habit and not getting in the way of doing the thing. I guess the only thing that ever gives me pause is the security of what I’m writing. I use coded language even, worrying about what could happen if what I write here were made public or if it were all lost. So that’s the only thing I really care about deeply.

I forget how long I’ve been using this site, but it’s been a constant companion to me and writing since I found it. I don’t write everyday all the time, but when I do I find this site to be the most helpful tool.

I kept trying to make this daily writing, artists journal thing work. And I came back to this site a couple times, and then it happened. I hit my 750 words today, and holy cow is that the right number of words. I love it.

Improve the homepage

More specifically, I would appreciate better navigation tools. It always takes me a few clicks to really get to the page I want, so making the menus more user friendly is really my request. Otherwise, my request is to leave the writing page as configurable and customizable as it already is, and NOT to add a bunch of features, bells, and whistles (like setting a lower bar for the number of words to be written in a day) — this is 750words.com — it’s based on Morning Pages, and that crisp, clean mission is all it needs. People can use it any way they want, but that doesn’t mean that the essence of its simplicity must be sacrificed in order to be all things to all people. Thank you for considering!

Headspace-quality scheduling

Headspace app is top in creating habits. Study the app and see how it makes it. Maybe instead of full 750 words, you could somedays choose 350. Maybe there could be more flexibility on the deadlines. Maybe you could offline text which will allow you not to break the streak while you’re offline.

A more updated, cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing website design and an app for mobile would make our writing experience even more enjoyable :)

The website has helped my essay writing skills and narrative writing skills since it helped me generate random ideas as well as structuring logically. It is useful for a student.

Broke my streak.
Was sad and upset at myself.
Sat down to write the next day.
Was happy again.
Lesson learned: writing = happiness.

I love to write, but I stopped for quite some time, and then I joined 750 Words. It seemed like an interesting concept, and then one night about 14 days back, I had an idea for a story. I’ve written every day since and am over 20,000 words into what feels like an interesting novel on murder and art history. 750 words gave me an excuse to start writing again. I’m enjoying myself and I life the fact that my writing page is just that – no formatting, no distractions and I can just write. Thank you!

I’ve dreamed of becoming an author for many years on and off (mostly off). My obstacle has always been consistency. I came across 750Words a little over two weeks ago. I entered the September Challenge hoping that it would provide enough accountability to get me into the habit of writing every day. I just completed my 17th day in a row. I have never worked on my novel for 17 days in a row before, ever. As a result, I have started my patronage today with a heart full of gratitude for helping me overcome my obstacle. Thank you!

I love the metadata function and use it for todo lists and such. It would be awesome, if it was possible to edit the metadata, to cross of done items off lists.

The Anti-Features Feature Request

Well, you expected the Contrarian to appear! Voila!

Yes, the beauty of 750words is its sheer, unadulterated simplicity. So as much as I like upgrades, enhancements, extensions myself in apps, for this app I humbly request that the “design attitude”, if you will, remain fairly spartan of features. Gyad forbid this should become like the multi-headed feature-Hydra known as Microsoft Word – a grotesque example of exploding your own market share with excessive feature-ism. Enough said. Though I might be a minority, 750words in its current incarnation is near perfect for its intended purpose.

Both my parents died in 2015. I found that writing here about my feelings and responsibilities and memories has helped me so much. 750words is my private writing site: I write things here I never intend to share with anyone. This is inspiration: head-clearing: consolation.

Seven years ago I wrote the first draft of a novel on 750 Words. It was the first, and so far only, time I’ve ever been able to push myself over the finish line. Lately I’ve been feeling that itch, knowing I needed to get back to writing every day. I procrastinated – because that’s what I do. But a week ago I logged back in and opened up a page. Seven-day streak so far. I’m grateful for this site and constantly surprised by how much it helps me.
