The Friends & Members of 750 Words

750 Words exists because of mutual good will between the people that run this site (Buster & Kellianne) and the people who use it (you). The site wouldn't exist without the generosity, patience, and humor of everyone involved. For the first 3+ years that the site was running (Dec 2009 to May 2013), the site was free to use but with some encouragement to donate. That served us well (and most importantly, generated enough income to keep the site up), but as the site grew the need for support also grew.

On June 12th 2013, all existing users of the site were given lifetime free accounts (we hope you'll continue to donate when you can). New accounts created after June 12th, 2013 are now required to become members within 30 days after signing up in order to keep writing. Everyone will always have access to previous writings, stats, etc, even if they choose not to become members.

We're listening to your feedback and want to make sure that first and foremost, we offer a friendly and safe place for people to dump their private thoughts. I expect that we'll continue to adjust the way this all works for the near term. Thanks for being an awesome community!

Who runs this site?

Our names are Buster and Kellianne, we live in Berkeley, California with our two sons (Niko and Louie) and this is something we've built and run in our spare time.

Writing Projects

A possibility to write long projects integrated with daily words.
The user would create a project – title, target number of words, deadline (optional parameters)
then, after writing our daily 750 words we could directly copy all or part of it to the project file.
The project could be stored on 750words or, for instance, the text could be transfered through a link to google docs: the user would define a file or several files in google docs as linked to 750 words (e.g. in the “edit project” feature); and after each day of writing we could copy (for instance through a small button on the margin of the page or something) the entire daily text or part of it into the pre-defined (or one of several pre-defined) google docs file(s).

Let me know what you think about this proposal :-)
It would be very convenient for all of us here who write fiction with the use of your site. :-)

I have been using this site for just under 30 days now, achieved at 22 day streak before falling off due to drama. The most interesting thing about it? I found myself missing the time spent here. It’s almost sacred to me, in a strange way.

Even though I’ve been relatively haphazard about when it happens, making sure I write every single day fills some part of me that I can’t seem to touch otherwise. This space gives me the motivation to tap at the keyboard and helps me clear my mind enough that ideas flow. I have cysts all through my hands and even though The Artist’s Way recommends that pages be done EVERY MORNING and LONGHAND, I’ve found that doing them AT ALL is really what counts, and this site helps me do that.

I can only hope that as I heal more and build my career as a writer (because I’ve been published five times now and want to make it a full time career) that I’ll never let anything get in the way of this sacred time.

There’s something satisfying about round numbers. Today I achieved a 1200 day streak. No new badge; just the joy of it. I love this site. After earning all the badges, it is simply part of my life at this point. And I’m extremely grateful for that. Thank you again and again, Buster and Kellianne.

Accurate word count for Asian characters

I really enjoy 750words and have recommended it to a lot of my friends. The thing I would like to see for change is to have a more accurate word count for Asian characters. A lot of my friends and I are keeping a daily journal in both English and Chinese/Japanese/Korean. Unlike European languages, in Asian language writing, one character counts as one word. I found that when typing Asian characters in 750words, a long sentence, or sometime a paragraph is counted as one word. It would greatly encourage me to write more if this issue could be resolved! :)

This is a place where I go for secrets. For sudden inspiration. For manic production when I want to time myself.

I haven’t made daily writing a priority. Yet. For now, I just need this place that serves me in a way a physical journal or online blogs cannot. This has evolved in many ways since I’ve used this service and I’m sure it will continue to change as a resource as I require.

This is a place that serves many purposes.
Enjoy.

I love this site. I’ve been writing for a month, and this has become my daily morning routine. The site has certainly given me enough momentum to start the day with fresh ideas and leave behind the negativity that usually bothers me. I hope I can keep up this habit – I find it pretty cool to re-read my own entries after a month. I found a lot of interesting thoughts that I didn’t know I had.

I have been using 750 words for several years now but have only this year started to take my writing practice seriously. I love the simplicity of the site as I can just log in and get going. Most days I use it as a brain dump, clearing out the clutter with a view to kick-starting my creative impulses. When I begin writing I am intrigued as to which way my mind will take me and very often I will have at least one mini epiphany during the course of the words and I find the whole process fascinating. I can’t recommend 750 words enough!

I’ve been writing morning pages on paper for over three years now. When I found this site I was skeptical. I guess I was a purist at heart and if Cameron said to do it on paper what other way could there be?! After just a month I’ve discovered and embraced that writing morning pages digitally is indeed okay. For the first time in three years I wrote the full amount every single day. And I got feedback and encouragement on how I was doing. Plus I don’t have to contribute to the growing stack of notebooks that I’d really like to trash but can’t seem to bring myself to do. The other advantage is this: with the paper notebooks, I always had the vague sense that there might be something in them, some germ of an idea, that might be something someday. But how to uncover it amidst all those pages? Now I know that all the words are there in digital format and, if I so desire, I can get at them and analyze them and search for that germ. I just paid for my subscription and I don’t see ever going back to the notebooks!

An iPhone/iPad app

It would be nice to have an app that would allow me to write offline & sync later, so as not to lose my streak even when I cannot get online for a couple of days.

during the month of April I have been in hospital with pneumonia, and had seventeen stitches on a cut on my leg – the wound became infected snd i was in hospital again, to have it cleaned nd again to have the skin graft that was necessary . In short, `i have spent most of the month either in hospital, or at home in bed with my leg up or on crutches (foremother three weeks) But the most important thing about this is that i wrote 750+ words every day! Even when i came back from surgery ! This has given mdc a huge boost of confidence – I know now that i can do anything I put my mind to -that i will sit down and do it no matter what – I love this site! it has kept me connected with my writing and with my feelings – this is not a month I would care to repeat bt i am extremely grateful for what it has given me.

I am very thankful to 750 Words for providing this platform! Few years ago I was literally unable to write anything longer than few sentences. My creative output was blocked. Now after practicing, even though I am not as constant as I would like, my skills are better and my self-confidence higher. I am even having ideas for books! Cheers to all the writers out there!

Would love to see more analysis about the quality of writing, in addition to the fabulous emotional information. Part of the enjoyment of daily writing, for me, is technical improvement.

750words has enabled me to have a secure place to be creative and let loose. The ability to export these and work on them in other editors has really helped me pan for gold in my muddy river of an imagination. 750words is a key component of my mind’s sluice.

750 words helped me reactivate the discipline to write everyday again, which has increased my creative output overall. Since starting, I’ve been able to finish a full-length play and create an entire musical, which is currently in rehearsal. In fact, I write so much creatively now that I don’t necessarily need 750 words in order to say I’m writing every day. But getting up at 6 am every morning and writing my words has become such a beloved ritual that I can’t imagine my mornings without it. Thank you for getting me back on track!

I used to use 750 all the time. For about a year and a half, 750 words propelled my writing. And then I stopped due to moves, job changes, a marriage, and general life craziness. But now I’m back with bigger, more consequential writing projects and deadlines (read: book contracts!). I have been all over the blogs and websites and listicles about the latest and greatest to help inspire and track writing. This is the only program that really works for me. It’s good to be back!

Perhaps I’ve not found this feature on the page and it already exists, if it doesn’t already exist, I think it would be cool to get text analysis on different timelines. I love reading my text analysis at the end of my daily 750, but I think it would be great to get analysis for the whole week, last ten sessions, last month, all time, etc.

I have gained so much self improvement through the 750 words program; my typing speed has increased from 20 wpm to 55 wpm, I have more clarity and eloquence when thinking and speaking, this is something everyone should at least try, it’s a great form of meditation and once I’ve seen how much content I’m able to produce in so little time it’s really inspired me to write more and shown me that writing a book could be a very achievable goal.

Make the "become a member" call to action clearer

I landed on the /members site and wanted to hand over my Paypal details so I can continue to use this excellent site … but there was so much writing on the page, and the button so elusive, that I almost gave up. I suggest you make it clearer and a little less cluttered. Or at least make the call to action above the button clearer :)

At some point, in this process of coming to this computer daily and writing, I passed 100,000 words. I have a flock. No fan fare. No bells and whistles, no counting, like I did when I passed 100 days. I just looked at my stats and noticed a new badge. And I felt, kind of proud, that I have actually written this much, this consistently for this amount of time. And it is leading to other writing in other places. Daily. So thank you. Here’s to noticing the second flock.
